Mélenchon is a euro-skeptic, he doesn't want out of the EU but has plans to try and reform it.
Ah that makes a lot more sense. I would support that reform, fully. The EU is a fantastic thing - but we can also make it better and stronger. Perhaps the French should lead the way on that.

Quite literally every candidate that doesn't flat want out of the EU has at least some reforms in mind
Mélenchon is a euro-skeptic, he doesn't want out of the EU but has plans to try and reform it.
Cheers, that's the attitude we need more of tbh.
Yes, it takes member states' interests too seriously and is lacking in enforcement, which is a problem, lets have a member state put more pressure on an unknown direction because why not.
Fair enough, perhaps it's not so good.
Wow, Im at the vote counting thingy, there's actually more fillon votes than le pen votes here
in a surprise upset, Jeb wins despite never being on the ballot
https://laec.fr/section/51/plan-a-proposer-une-refondation-democratique-sociale-et-ecologique-des-traites-europeens-par-la-renegociation Google translates French fairly well. Against free trade, against free capital flow, against the independent Central Bank, for Common Agricultural Policy ????? which already exists and gives France a LOT of money ? Really dumb ideas, really. Just like his 100% tax on rich above a certain income. [editline]23rd April 2017[/editline] EU will never agree to this, and Melenchon will then do "Plan B", which is torpedoing EU from inside.
Now I don't know what to think of this lad.
in a surprise upset, Jeb wins despite never being on the ballot
Damn, I spent like 10 minutes photoshopping the Jeb surprise win map but remembered that posting image replies is now bannable. That was a waste of time lol

Projected result from actual votes: Emmanuel Macron: 23.7% Marine Le Pen: 21.7% Source from the France 24 livestream.
The countdown is over, it seems like it's Le Pen vs Macron for the second turn.
It's fine if you made it yourself
I'll just link it. Current estimates

Fuck this gay earth
Congrats, president Macron.
Let me tell you a little bit more on Common Agricultural Policy. In essence, it has been around since 1950s, it is around 1 3s of EU budget, to make European agriculture sustainable through high tariffs outside and subsidies inside. This creates oversupply and artificially high food prices. France has the most arable land of any country in EU. 17% of EU's total. They got 22% of this spending in 2004. CAP has been reformed in 2004 and 2013. He wants EU to pay large bucks to France to keep the noncompetitive French agriculture alive. Whereas farmers of poor countries like Africa go down as they cant compete with subsidised agriculture in Western countries, like this CAP and American Cotton :terrists:. And he probably is for foreign aid too.
jasus, the CAP is fairly important to us, I wouldn't have wanted him screwing with it. What's that Macron lad like - considering he's likely to get in. Though not necessarily - but I would assume that most supporters of Fillion and Melechon would go for Macron?
Poor Hamon, he almost got less than NDA...
So much for polls being inaccurate.
Imagined if the Left had actually unified for once? If Melenchon were just a bit more magnetic of Hamon/Poutou/Arthaud voters, he'd be ahead of them all.
Congrats, president Macron.
You realize that for it to be President* Macron today, he would have to get a 50% majority today? The results of the 1st stage haven't even come out (its 8 minutes after polling closes). Bit soon to be calling the result of the second stage which is in 2 weeks?
are these exit polls because everyone im seeing is making it look like these are the final results
It is premature to call him President but I don't see how Le Pen will in any way be able to attract Mel, Fillion or other voters at all. The vote in two weeks could be a fairly crushing victory for Macron.
Which is what you will say after he wins the second round
I know.
are these exit polls because everyone im seeing is making it look like these are the final results
No these are a sample of the first results to come through, after being put through a statistical model.
He wouldn't be necessarily bad for Ireland. He is for more money flowing in CAP - so Ireland would get more money too. However, this is dumb, because subsidies are dumb. Keeping Irish agriculture afloat with bare minimum is okay as long as they also improve the efficiency, competitiveness and sustainability of them. There is a reason CAP has been decreasing. A lot of Melenchon voters don't like Macron because he is a banker centrist.
Irish agriculture has improved quite a bit because of CAP, but due to the market it's still important for farmers. We just also have a problem with the fact that Britain is leaving the EU. Would those Melenchon voters want Le Pen, then?
So how's Emmanuel Macron then? [editline]23rd April 2017[/editline] Is he alright or just better than Pen?
Imagined if the Left had actually unified for once? If Melenchon were just a bit more magnetic of Hamon/Poutou/Arthaud voters, he'd be ahead of them all.
Imagine if we had an electoral system where such political games didn't even matter. Two round elections are better than FPTP but voter division still occurs.
Can't believe MLP will go through the second round...
you mean people voted for this guy?
So how's Emmanuel Macron then? [editline]23rd April 2017[/editline] Is he alright or just better than Pen?
It doesn't take much to be better than Le Pen. But beyond that I think his social positions are rock solid. However, I am skeptical of his economical policies, being an investment banker and all that. As a leftist I would ideally prefer Melenchon, but in a case of Macron vs Le Pen, it would be obvious to go for Macron. [editline]23rd April 2017[/editline] There is this one thing that I overlooked at my first glance. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-39555125 He apparently wants to give the government the power to demand release of encrypted communications from ISPs and other companies. That should definitely get protested if implemented.
Can't believe MLP will go through the second round...
I mean, it should come off as no surprise considering that's what all polls concluded.
