It's like russia is trying to be the final fortress for anti-gay people and anti-gay believers.
I'm surprised that you even said this
its opposite day!
i don't hate lium
The ONLY reason this makes any shred of sense is because the gay population has a higher statistical rate of HIV/AIDS per capita due to the increased ability to transmit through the anal wall. But no person with any dangerous blood born pathogens can donate blood, so, it's really redundant and discriminatory anyway. Overall a stupid law, but more reasonable than anything else they have done recently, Russia quit being a bunch of fucking bigots, you're acting like 1950's America.
It would be ridiculously expensive to test every Blood sample for HIV anyways. It's a lot easier to cut the risk by excluding people with risk factors, which just happens to be having gay sex.
I don't give a fuck how expensive it is, that's not something you just don't do because of costs. HIV/AIDS is kind of a big deal. I'd rather pay an extra $200 in taxes every year knowing that blood used in life saving transfusions is not infected with a deadly, painful blood born pathogen than play the game of blood Russian roulette.
That's like saying that having employees wash their hands after using the bathroom at a restaurant is too expensive so it's just a lot easier to limit employees to using the bathroom 2 times a day to reduce the risk of them putting dangerous bacteria in food.
Okay, now that is silly. Unless they've got AIDS or something, the blood could be used to save lives.
you know things are bad when Lium says "I'm sort of not okay with this."
The usual response to that, I suppose, is that a false negative test result would have devastating consequences, so extra precautions are justified.
Again, I don't know about it, I don't know the statistics, so I can't say whether this extent of precaution is justified.
What the fuck are you on about? If a test gets muddled, what the hell does it matter if the person is straight, bi, or gay? Straight people can get std's, you know, if you never knew that.
“return to normal life and become heterosexuals, as are 95 to 99 percent of our citizens.”
Oh wow.
That quote is fucking priceless.
Not defending Russia but just wanted to state that it's quite common even in pretty liberal countries
I believe the problem here is that they're doing this at a time where Russia is passing other anti-gay stuff, it makes you think, are they doing it because they're a highrisk group or just because they're gay? The fact that they're even going to start offering conversion therapy makes me think it's the latter.
Hell why not use the money for those retarded conversion therapies they're going to setup and use it to test people?
A group of people who have scientific correlation to having a higher risk of HIV and AIDS infection
anyone have a source for this? just curious
Guys, for fucks sake, countries that ban homosexual blood donations are NOT doing it to stop "the gay" from spreading.
They're doing it due to the increase risk of HIV infection due to micro tearing of the colon which happens in almost ANY penetration situation.
Russia seems to be stuck in a loop of 1 step forward a million steps back.
So not only are they disadvantaging gay people, they're also leaving (some) sick people in the dark. Slippery slope?
i would be happy to catch a debilitating disease like "the gay" if it meant living
In the UK all samples are screened for HIV regardless of whether you've had sex with someone who may have had sex with or you yourself have had sex with someone carrying HIV or not.
They also test for Hep B and Hep C.

Which they should. You don't want to give blood that's contaminated if the donor simply doesn't know. And I think the US does this too. Which why I think its weird we have a gay ban simply because they are statistically more likely to have HIV.
From what I read, its an old policy from way back when it wasn't really possible to test for HIV accurately. Which I supposed makes sense. But that was 30 years ago, and the tests have been around for at least a decade, and I'm sure they've improved since then.

The UK up until a couple years ago still ran from old rules that were from the 60's that were back when being gay as still considered to be a "disease" or something you could catch.
They recently changed it so you can donate 12 months after your last sexual encounter with a man (which is enough time for HIV to show up more accurately I understand.)

Hurr, the usual "Fuck what are you even saying" argument. It's pretty goddamn clear what I'm saying if you read my posts.
Gays are more likely to have STDs including HIV. That's p. much a fact right now. As such, extra precautions may be justified.
