• GameStop’s next step for preorder exclusives: Getting into a big game’s development process

I miss when stores would give you some promotional physical bonus thing instead of exclusive DLC.
Retailers exclusives are one of the worst things ever happened to the videogame market. Die off, retail.
but that reason directly contradicts what you just said people preordered aliens because wow gearbox they're pretty cool i mean borderlands isnt awful so maybe-
yeah what I failed to mention is that people are stupid to trust publishers, imo getting a $5 DLC for preordering isn't worth the chance of my $60 game being worthless, no matter how awesome they've been in the past
I bet "getting into the development process" just amounts to sending ideas for Gamestop to "relay" to the developer. Only either THEY take full credit or more likely just chuck said ideas in the trash because they never intended anything but getting you to pre-order. Like how when you pre-order a Call Of Duty at Gamestop, you get entered into a contest that supposedly never actually happens rather than anything of use.
Basically, GameStop is getting into Early Access without using the words early and access. That is all this really is. And I predict it's going to go just as awesome as it has on PC. That's right, some poor fuck at GameStop is going to face roughly what postal faces every day the Rust forum exists.
Preordering games when they're still in development is basically Early Access without the beta access (unless you get it as a preorder bonus). You're giving the money up front to the developer before the game is finished, and once they make a profit they have no reason to continue working on the game, so they can easily push out broken games without worrying about not making profit because gullible gamers already bought it. Even if I know a game will be good and I like the developer I won't preorder, because I don't want them to have the security of knowing they're already in the green so they don't need to work as hard on the game.

You can easily get your money back and you can decide how much money to put down on a preorder at a physical location. Buying into early access and wanting a refund usually involves a semi-lengthy process and you pay the full amount, and typically, you can't get your money back if you just up and change your mind, unless you're a douchebag who calls their bank .and files a dispute
What happened to people preordering games because they wanted them as soon as possible and not just because it has some extra dlc? I also remember when Gamestop had their own stupid cover for Far Cry 3 preorders, so yeah I'd rather not have and partnerships with Gamestop [t]http://i.imgur.com/BmXKZHz.jpg[/t]
digital distribution on the PC happened and soon to be followed on consoles really. Special content on preorders is gamestop trying to future proof their business model.
I wish gamestop would go under already. I don't like using this term to describe shit but I feel Gamestop is a cancer on the industry; just a big fat ugly tumor that's in dire need of a removal.
There's nothing inherently wrong with preorders. I pre-ordered Bioshock Infinite, and got the entirety of XCOM with it, which was like $50 at the time. Anyway, what exactly do they mean by "Getting into the development process"? Are they talking about a closed beta?
There's nothing wrong with it, but try to remember that there's nothing particularly good about it either. Preordering does not serve the consumer any good, they allow you items they have basically just banned everyone else from getting (day 1) and they use preorder metrics for projecting total sales. I mean, discs and data aren't notoriously hard to reproduce. Preordering is for cases when businesses expect a certain number of customers and the market exceeds those expectations or for products that can't produce a number to meet demand, but for games these days and digital delivery especially, it serves very little purpose.
