These black holes make me wonder. Dont they basically eat up everything around them? So over millions of years wont our universe basically swallowed by a black hole?
No, but the 'open' universe theory (the one in which the universe keeps expanding forever and ends with the big rip) has an hypothetical stage in which black holes are the dominant force in the universe, with all the stars having collapsed millions of years ago. Then the black holes themselves would start 'evaporating'. It's all very bleak, actually. Which is why I like to think it will all end in the Big Crunch and everything will start over again.

Current evidence suggests that the curvature of space-time is flat and as such the universe will continue to expand without bound, eventually resulting in a big rip.

Welp. That sucks. [editline]well[/editline] Oh shit, looks like a new Big Bang could occur in approximately 10^10^56 years, right after a fucking Boltzmann brain appears .

I'm just going to go hide under my bed now if that's okay.
what if there was little tiny black holes you could put in wastepaper baskets what would it sound like when you throw paper in it? probably *thoop*
Black holes 'eat' at too slow a rate to have any kind of impact like that, especially with the universe continuing to expand. If that were theoretically possible (and I'm not even sure it is), it would take trillions of years, if not more.
Black holes evaporate over time.
It is amazing to think how big stuff can get out in space. And how small it can make us feel.
the universe scares me
It scares us all...
Black holes evaporate over time.
Don't they emit hawkings radiation?
Don't they emit hawkings radiation?
Quite a bit debate around that.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_the_far_future Some shit in there is just beyond my comprehension.
This is amazing. It sucks how when we die there is no chance of us witnessing some of this. Makes me wish I was born far far later to see what will happen in the future.
out of the the Final Ends the " The Big Rip " scares me the most ( well that or Freeze / Heat Death )
What exactly is the big rip? Why will it happen if the universe expands if the universe is just some term we use to explain a collection of cosmos in a vaccum (versus the vaccum, and the "universe" itself, being bound together somehow). It just doesn't seem likely that the universe would have a similar reaction to cloth ripping when over expanded, considering its a totally different thing entirely and we have things on earth that never "rip" when expanded.

Same principle as when stars and galaxies get farther away from eachother as the universe expands, just with atoms instead of galaxies. Keep in mind though, this is something that happens over the course of trillions/quadrillions/mindrapingamount of years, so there's no abrupt 'ripping' of anything.
Ahhh that makes much more sense That timeline wikipedia articled did mention something about all matter eventually getting to a state where being a solid is impossible as energy declines
Just off hand I recall that there's various "endgame" scenarios for the universe. Sounds like it's going to be a pissing match between galactic-sized black holes and the incredibly accelerated expansion of dark energy (with dark energy winning)
Quite a bit debate around that.
No there isn't. [editline]3rd December 2012[/editline] It's yet to be strongly verified by experiment but there's not really any debate.
Oh shit, looks like a new Big Bang could occur in approximately 10^10^56 years, right after a fucking Boltzmann brain appears
What the fuck is this boltzmann brain shit, doesn't make sense... is it entirely hypothetical or something?
No there isn't. [editline]3rd December 2012[/editline] It's yet to be strongly verified by experiment but there's not really any debate.
I believe there's still quite some people who have different theories on the matter. Don't get me wrong, I have no horse in the race. I don't know know enough about it to have an opinion about whether or not it exists.
I bet ur ma cud still fill it!! Being serious though, i can't even comprehend how massive that is. Scary shit.
I kind of feel like you're pulling this out of your ass.
I can think of no reason why I would do as such. It's something I remember watching some time ago. Hawking and another fella both had their theory on the matter. Hawking had the most support for his theory but the other guy also made some good points (or so I was led to believe, given my lack of proper understanding in the matter). It was even described as some ongoing thing that has been going for quite some time in the community.
