We already know that they're sentient, as most animals are. The word you're looking for is sapient.
Pretty sure it's the other way around. Sapient means aware of it's surroundings and being able to react based on perceived information, Sentient is being self aware and able to place one's self as an individual as opposed to just being all base reaction all the time like a spider or whatever. So roomba is sapient, a person is sentient. Although being "sapient" about a topic means being really well versed in it too, but english is a mess so eh
responsive to or conscious of sense impressions

having or showing great wisdom or sound judgment

The behavior observed in the study was that they each wait for the other to stop making sounds before they themselves start making sounds. It's not the sign of a conversation, many other species do the exact same thing for simple reasons like reducing interference.
Especially so because it's sound being transmitted underwater. You have two animals of the same species who communicate using the same frequencies, if one spoke while the other was speaking they'd be cancelling each other out when the waves are 180 degrees out of phase. It'd be like trying to understand someone's speech playing from a skipping CD.
this doesn't bode well, they're clearly preparing to leave the planet.
Imagine the ethical concerns if we find a way to talk with dolphins and realize they are about as sapient and intelligent as we are, but we've been keeping them locked in captivity and putting them on display, while also completely fucking with their natural environment. And that, like humans, there are "good" and "bad" dolphins, yet we joking consider them all rapists because of a bad bunch of them.
While they are obviously extremely intelligent and perhaps even similar to where we are, their consciousness and perception of the world is probably nothing like ours. Considering the different evolutionary paths we took, it's probably akin to an alien species.
