Two signed Damien Hirst works of art worth £33,000 have been stolen from a gallery.
The pieces were taken from the Exhibitionist Gallery in Notting Hill, west London, in the early hours of Monday.
The stolen works, called Pyronin Y and Oleoylsarcosine, feature multi-coloured dots.
Police believe the artwork was specifically targeted and want witnesses to come forward.
Pyronin Y is the larger of the two. It was produced in 2005 and is worth £15,000.
Oleoylsarcosine was created in 2008 and is worth £18,000.
Det Sgt Jon Lightfoot said: "It appears the suspect has specifically targeted the two pieces."
I'm sure the gallery is better without them.
I wish I could be a talentless hack and sell effortless artwork for £15 000 and £18 000
I wish someone would steal Verity, the statue he put up in my town's harbour. It's shit.

That's quite disturbing

You try and draw perfect circles on a grid.

My first thoughts when I saw the picture.

that painting looks exactly like my shower curtain
Two pieces of art that were made by underpaid interns which Damien Hirst then signed
i hate to be one of those "i could shit on a canvas too" dudes, but i don't see what makes this worth £33,000. i mean, it's some nice colored circles, but it's just a bunch of colored circles, why is it more expensive than most cars
Weird names for "artworks" with a bunch of circles on a white background.
it's like if you got a dumb tattoo of the structure of adrenaline/epinephrine of your arm and the tat guy just gives you a bunch of polka dots instead

I find that statue incredibly cool to be honest.

the baby symbolizes a baby
the guy in the background symbolizes the patriarchy

They are worth that much, because someone believes they are worth that much. I honestly don't understand most of the uneducated criticisms directed at what can be called modern art. Everyone thinks they can do the same thing, yet no one really does. You can call it marketing, advertising yourself, a hype or whatever but there is nothing stopping you or anyone else from creating a piece of work just like that and selling it.
Hindsight is 20/20 etc... It is very easy to talk about how trivial a task is or how everyone can create a certain piece of art after that piece is created.
Also this is not really directed specifically at you, they are just general observations and comments that would apply to 90% of the posts in this thread.

Incredibly cool, but extremely out of place.

Modern art gets obscenely expensive because of rich idiots who want to look cultured. That's not to say that modern art is bad, the artists are just masters at talking people with more money than sense into thinking they're smart for buying it.

To be perfectly honest that is how art and artists have worked for centuries.

Yes but the difference is I don't like modern art, therefore its bad.
People say "well I could've done this" etc. etc.
The fact with art is that you didn't do it, this guy did it and that's why he made money - cus someone liked it.
That's all art is, someone liking your work and paying to own it.

I like it. I don't get the meaning, it's probably 2deep4me, but it's really well done
Hirst's response to those who said that anyone could have done this artwork was, "But you didn't, did you?"
not specifically about the stolen artworks but about another one of his works, The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living (or 'dead shark in a tank' to the uncultured swine that make up the population)
Hirst is just fucking lucky. Most artists need to do something legitimately good before their name alone can give something worth.
I guess "good" is subjective though. Most of Hirsts art seems to be stuff that isnt technically impressive, at least to me.

I'm on the same boat here, but on a more moderate view; not all modern art sucks, but I draw a line at polka dots on a grid being 'art' especially after the strange titles he gave to them.
Frankly, 100 Campbell soup cans is at least better in that regard.

it's not technically impressive to catch a tiger shark and mummify it in a formaldehyde solution that can be transported and set up as an art installation? and then taking that shark and stretching its skin over a fibreglass replica? and then replacing that shark with another shark, including a 2 month trip for the body, and injecting a formaldehyde solution into its body?
it doesnt matter that he hired specialists to do these things for him - he's a conceptual artist afterall - but if you're not impressed by even the technical skill in the logistics of that operation then i feel a bit sorry for you
"Banksy is a terrible artist because he uses stencils - he's not a real spraypaint artist who does it freehand."
That statement above is both true and false, yes: stencil art can be considered easier than doing art with just a hand, your can and your mind but then it's the message behind Banksy's stencil art and how they grab at people - When it comes to art, I think a way of thinking to help you appreciate more art is "One mans trash is another mans treasure" because it's entirely subjective and that's why I like art [sp]plus I'm really in love with landscape art by people like John Constable and Bob Ross[/sp]
I agree that Hirst isn't my cup of tea when it comes to what I consider good art but that doesn't rob him of his right to be an artist, rubbing your arse on a canvas can be considered art because it means something to that person who pays so much money for it.

That's the sort of modern art I personally respect, myself.
The kind of modern 'art' I don't like is a polka dot shower curtain getting a fancy title that has little to do with the actual content.
Every thread about art is always the same people posting about how modern art sucks and then slowing down to "well not ALL modern art's bad but i don't see how this [etc]" it's like alright cool I thought we went over this the last 50 threads about art it's fine that you're not into this art but it's also really obvious at this point that you're not really that much of an art person at all so I don't know why you continue going through the same cycle every single thread on a topic you're not even into.
