People in this thread don't read that much into the OP?
Again. GAME WILL BE FREE EXPECT FOR CONTENT THAT MODDERS WANT TO SELL.
Seriously, all these people who go like 'omg must have p2w bla bla bla' even though they said all that.
Stop acting dumb, they're not even adding a progression system so there's nothing to lock behind a pay wall.
They're not even selling anything directly, everything on the marketplace will be made by a third party, you don't even have to charge for it you can release content for free.
Pretty sure on the stream they mentioned they'd make content too.
As long as mods can be free I'm completely okay with this.
Unless they're having some radically different model of f2p then imo its pretty bad. I have my own opinion but you can keep rating me dumb for it. The only f2p model I've enjoyed is tf2, but I played it since launch. Every other f2p game I've played (World of Tanks (years ago), Mechwarrior, Planetside) has either been pay 2 win or a boring grindfest. Both featuring hideously overpriced items / packages. Hell even TF2's transactions are expensive.
The game needs to have something that makes users want to drop money on it. Again, this is usually in the form of pay 2 win or annoyance features. Game companies still want to make money.
why does it matter how other people implement free to play systems when they've very clearly outlined their own plans? do you think they're lying or something??? did you read the article?
New UT on a new engine, completely cross platform and it's free? Didn't expect that, wow.
That combined with the low price of UE4 for devs puts them in a really good spot, IMO.

Dude this is the exact same monetization strategy. The only difference is the community also works on the development of the game and not just the user generated content store. This is a fantastic model.
It's 100x better than CS:GO at least. Buying the game then buying community maps as DLC with an additional UGC store on top .
If it keeps the artstyle from 2k4, I'm happy.
And I can't see how it being f2p would change a single thing.

The system they outline in the article is more or less exactly like tf2's (game and most of the content is free, community/event items available in store). Epic aren't a small developer by any means, and could support such a model. What exactly are you complaining about here?
I think this will work if they have loads of maps, weapons and models available for free from start.
New UT? But they ain't have anything :v:
Btw: This is such a shit thread. Would have done it better lol. The stream is still live with new updates like....
Will it be Free 2 Play or Free? Answer: FREE
This post is so full of horrible I don't even know where to start... or how you've even lasted these few months
Maybe to create mods you'll need to buy into a UE4 subscription, and that's how they're justifying the game being free with no microtransactions.
This is exactly what is good about the PC.
finally a new ut

That's it exactly. Making money off licensing with a product that increases the engine's market appeal. Win/win all around.
I wouldn't mind paying for it once, like the other titles.
Still, nice.
Sounds awesome, always wanted to see something like this done in large scale. TF2 system is probably the best around and this sounds like supercharged version of it.
I'm incredibly suspicious about the whole thing. Whats to say they don't abandon the community marketplace before its even a thing in favor of "one map, one character for free, pay up for literally everything else"? It looks good in print, but it will be months before any of us, save for those signed up for UE4, can really comment.
And yes, I sadly base my opinion on how other things have been labeled "free" or "free to play" and in reality there is very little in the "free" aspect.

because it would be counterproductive to open up their entire company to the public like they have and then turn their back on everything they said
do you have trust issues lol
Was there any word on a release date on this?

yeah all the maps will be paid, and you only get 1 enforcer
stop being so daft, theyre streaming everything they do

Well it started development today, so maybe a year or two.
This sounds like TF2's model had TF2 been free from the git go.
Not a bad model honestly, sure it get's abused but what doesn't these days?
Well it started development today, so maybe a year or two.
The current code and assets are available, though since it's only just started there is very little.
That's super sweet. Once they have a set of animations and a skeleton down, I'm going to try and make some compatible playermodels. Working in UE4 is a freakin dream.
Finger's crossed for a multiplayer/co-op campaign.
Hell yes, this is probably the best way they could have done this. I actually started playing UT3 again recently. It's not terrible, and it does a lot of things right, but I can't stand the visual style. It's so devoid of color.
And I miss the bigass maps from UT2004, but mods fix that.
Well it started development today, so maybe a year or two.
I missed that part, thank you :)
For all those who do not read the OP. The game is free, not F2P, but free as in every aspect. It's crossplatform, opensource, no DRM. Free to play, use and modify.
How could they even make it P2W when it's opensource? The community could just patch a version without the P2W then.
So is the whole thing going to be a huge tech demo/advertisement to demonstrate and promote UE4? That works for me
Technically, since you pay $19 a month to use Unreal Engine 4 to begin with, Epic's going to get more than enough money with the help of the community anyway as they work together to create the game.
