Technically, since you pay $19 a month to use Unreal Engine 4 to begin with, Epic's going to get more than enough money with the help of the community anyway as they work together to create the game.
As if Epic don't have a global metric fuckton of money already.
I don't think they're making this game with money at the focus, or so I hope atleast.
Can't wait. UT is one of my favorite arena shooters.
oh man, can't wait for a new RPG invasion mod ala 2k4 because they couldn't do it in 3 :D
i love the deathwarrant monstermash servers and anyone who hasn't played there should go check them out!
Watch as it becomes hat simulator 2.
This is the most jaded fucking thread I've ever seen. It's gonna be FREE. It's going to have a marketplace where people can sell mods for it if they so please, Epic will likely make a cut of profits. This still makes the game free. It's not fishy, it's a damn good business model really. It'll sell the engine to devs who want to mod. It'll sell the engine to those who are beginners and just interested. People will still be able to release the mod for free. An open-source, free Unreal Tournament is a great thing, don't let the F2P model make you think Free is impossible.
I just hope there will be enough vanilla content.
30 characters, 20 maps stuff. If roughinery isnt in ill be sure to remake it.

FP hates free, except when it costs money.
Such is the way of /Pol/sationalist Headlines

Except that's exactly the opposite direction they are heading.

if you want to get technical, you can pay the subscription once then cancel out the sub. UE4 will work indefinitely, you just don't get updates or access to the attached marketplace.
Watch as it becomes hat simulator 2.
not sure if you ever played an unreal tournament game before
it's kind of an everything simulator, but you don't need to do anything in-game or find random drops or explicitly buy anything. You download a mod from a community website and throw it in a folder like you would when you add stuff to gmod, then BAM you're fuckin' shit up as bender rodriguez
I'm sure tons of mods will be put out for free, not even using their market hub. However it will add incentive to create top-tier content by giving people the option to sell their hard work.
Sounds awesome, always wanted to see something like this done in large scale. TF2 system is probably the best around and this sounds like supercharged version of it.
cs:go system is more fitting considering TF2 has drops that affect gameplay

i don't understand how so many people can forget that free games are actually a thing. epic make more than enough from licensing and marketplace cuts to have this not even make a dent
Fucking finally. I came inside myself.
But now I'm scared.
This new system of theirs, although it worked so well with TF2, doesn't fit well with UT.
UT games let you customize almost everything with his handy editor, it allowed you to go nuts and there was nothing stopping you from making a Nali Bunny Nuclear Launcher or a guano gun.
Now I feel like having to buy a map/weapon/whatever is going to hinder the experience for some people.
Yes I know most of it would be free, and it probably will be monitored and balanced, but I feel like you'll never get to enjoy the full experience if somebody releases a really popular custom map and/or you get a Redeemer from start for 20 matches FOR ONLY $1.99! LIMITED EDITION!!!
I personally have no problem to buy the game like before and have the map packs like we used to have, and to download the mods myself.
I guess we'll see how it goes.
Also, they better keep the fucking bots on this game. UT was really good even if you wanted/had to play it alone.

Don't forget Deck 16.
[sp]Deck 17 was shit[/sp]
You can tell it'll be terrible because they didn't even bother giving it a new name, they just slapped the series name on it.

The new Tomb Raider would like a word.
Realistically though, it's been 7 years since the last Unreal Tournament, and while this is technically a sequel to 3, the model behind the game is a total restructure from what they've done in the past.
Absolutely amazing. Epic Games is doing something pretty revolutionary (again) that will be interesting to see play out, an open source developed title backed by a AAA studio. I think it will be really interesting to see the development cycle.
With how simple Unreal Tournament is, and Epic providing all the art assets, I bet the game can be developed pretty quickly with many people contributing to different subsystems. Would be really awesome if the top contributors got royalties off of some marketplace stuff.

and you can still make those weapons and maps.. the marketplace is for top tier (probably TC mods) to be sold. also, why the heck do you think it would be P2W? seriously?

Plus, you know, they may require everyone else to have the mod as well to play on the server.
Next series of Ballistic Weapons mod, anyone?

I would really like to see an Infiltration remake.
welp, if it's easily modable, I want that rpg mod to be in this game, and an invasion mode, with alot of models to face against, I don't care if it's World of Warcraft characters, Starcraft, diablo characters, slimes from dragon warriors, i don't care just add them in.
The real UT community isnt the kind of community that likes the modern pay2win or "pay2get-anything".
"$10 for a map" wont happen.
I kinda wish I still had my copy of UT3.
I hope the first thing that happens is ports of old maps like with UT3
oh and them showing some love to Onslaught/Warfare, those modes are rlly underrated and I hope they make a comeback.
Imagine Nali Weapons in new UT.

Onslaught underrated? The most overplayed gamemode of Uk4? The mode that killed Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch? Personally I wouldn't give a shit if they completely axed it, it ruined what I liked about the game, I wanted to play arena DM not some sort of pseudo battlefield mode.
New UT on a new engine, completely cross platform and it's free? Didn't expect that, wow.
That combined with the low price of UE4 for devs puts them in a really good spot, IMO.
I just had to slam my head into the desk to make sure I wasn't dreaming or hallucinating this shit.
Now I have a really nasty headache, THANKS EPIC
Completely free huh? Considering the fact that things just got a whole lot less competitive, and a lot more 12 year old, I'm sticking to my 99 and 2k4 unless this one really blows me away. Like really blows me out of the water. Fuck, it's gonna have to be able to blow my dick.

I was referring to UT3's variation which I preferred, Just using both to clarify.
TBH I never saw any servers for Onslaught after a few months of UT2k4

UT3 version is called warfare. But yeah it's almost the same thing. Almost.
Cautiously optimistic.
Hi!
My name is Michiel van den Bos and one of the two main composers for the original Unreal and Unreal Tournament. It's been a while and my memory's a bit foggy, but my music has been featured in classic maps like Curse][, Codex, Facing Worlds, Tempest and many others. I've been composing for games ever since, including the universally praised soundtrack for Age of Wonders 3.
I'm writing here because I was getting messages and e-mails telling me I should, due to the announcement of the new UT.
I was wondering if there is any interest in me getting involved and I'm sure I can get Alex to join in too.
If so, I'd be happy to continue a discussion here or off-forum at mikebossmusic[at]gmail.com.
Thank you for your attention and best regards,
Michiel van den Bos
