I say fuck Obama. This is just going to make me take school a lot LESS seriously. I already have to sit there a horrible six hours a day. I REFUSE to sit there any longer.
Wow this thread is fucking old, nice megabump CorpseRida.
That's not the way to get re-elected.
Actually it is, because children can't vote. :downs: Parent's want their children to be succesful in the future and the best way to do that is increase amount of time in school as well as expanding the boundaries of specific subjects so that Americans can compete in a global market.

Let's hope he waits until 2012 to do it
I lived in Chicago for a while, the education system out there is so fucked up. I went to a catholic school from 1-8th grade because theres way to many nigs at the public school, well for half of 4th grade i had to go to a public school because I got kicked out for a fight or something, anyways they were just learning their multiplication tables in 4th fucking grade, I had learned them when I was in 2nd. Fast forward to my sophomore (current year) in high school, I moved to michigan where they recently passed the Michigan Merit law which requires you to take more advanced cources in order to graduate high school, much better imo, it sucks I was so far behind in algebra and I got fucked over my freshman year, this semester I have Algebra AND Geometry. Our school goes by trimesters, which is three class changes per year instead of semester (4 class changes per year) MATHEMATICS - 4 Credits Algebra I Geometry (two trimester class Algebra II One math course in final year of high school ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS - 4 Credits English Language Arts 9 English Language Arts 11 English Language Arts 10 English Language Arts 12 SCIENCE - 3 Credits Biology (biology is an all year class, with part a, b, and c for trimesters) One additional science credit Physics or Chemistry SOCIAL STUDIES - 3 Credits .5 credit in Civics .5 credit in Economics U.S. History and Geography World History and Geography PHYSICAL EDUCATION & HEALTH - 1 Credit (michigan is fat :saddowns:) VISUAL, PERFORMING AND APPLIED ARTS - 1 Credit ONLINE LEARNING EXPERIENCE Course, Learning or Integrated Learning Experience LANGUAGE OTHER THAN ENGLISH - 2 Credits In grades 9-12; Yeah that's right Europe, to graduate high school in america you need 2 years of foreign language, can you stop your bitching now? pdf link http://www.michigan.gov/documents/mde/New_MMC_one_pager_11.15.06_183755_7.pdf
Huzzah for senior year.
I already have one hour long periods with 43 minutes worth of breaks. (13 minute snack, 30 minute lunch-- That in itself is bullshit) I don't need to spend more time in that shithole. It would make me want to not go to school or completely give up studying.
[sarcasm]Maybe instead of having our breaks longer...increase the quality of the breaks...by legalizing prostitution.[/sarcasm]
And the people are still going to bitch about education in Georgia.
Where's the KKK when you need 'em? [editline]09:38PM[/editline] Wait, if he increases the school year by 1/3 (seeing as we get the majority of the summer season off), doesn't that mean that over the course of 12 years of schooling we will get an extra 4 years? What the fuck man! They have colleges for that you dumb fuck! [editline]09:38PM[/editline] See? I just did that math in my head. I'm educated enough.

If this happens, I'm walking out the door of my building at 1430, same as always. No man, woman, or janitor in that school will stop me. Hell, if it comes down to it I will punch them all out of my way
This is gonna suck. I'm more then sure those old assholes in congress are going to vote yes because they want to keep us little bastards separated from society as much as possible.
schools can't afford to do this anyways
I really can't see why he's making us 'compete' against other countries. Then again, I can't really give an unbiased opinion since the public school I went to here was an excellent school, with almost no bad teachers (save for one), and they all offered tutorials, one-on-one teaching, spending time past school hours, and taught their subjects very in-depth and good enough to keep you interested the entire period. Really, Obama's making a sweeping generalization of students based on averages and statistics, rather than looking into actual human data. Some students don't want to learn not because their school system sucks, but because they don't want to receive an education to begin with. Meanwhile, the students, like me, who strive for a higher education in a flawed economic environment, have to get lumped in with them as one dull, blemished blob that represents everyone as a whole. It's the students (and some teachers) that are the problem of this. There's a reason why America has some of the most prestigious universities in the world, because there are many, many people that want to receive a higher education and a higher shot at life. Frankly, if I still was in school, I'd be quite disenchanted with Obama if he tried to pull this off, because of his naivety and short-sightedness on the subject. oh yeah, and his unneeded economic recovery plans are shit
I love this thread. Obama is god until he does something you disagree with, and now you all hate him. Just accept he doesn't have a damned clue what he's doing in office and he's just trying to copy other countries while crossing his fingers and hoping for the best.

Fuck yea senior year!
I support the idea of shorter summer breaks. Education should be the first and foremost. I think a lot of the world's problems can be solved by better education.
Quantity =/= Quality.
I support the idea of shorter summer breaks. Education should be the first and foremost. I think a lot of the world's problems can be solved by better education.
Except that's ignoring the question of "what is education". Is education siphoning large numbers of facts into uninterested pupils, or is education teaching those aforementioned pupils to think critically and seek out information that is relevant to what they want to do? All the school system is right now is a big shit factory that makes a lot of interesting stuff really fucking boring by teaching it horribly and never teaching the kids how to apply it. Teaching them more shit they don't care about isn't going to make them smarter any time soon.
Doesn't matter to me. I'll be out of college soon.

If someone does one thing wrong, it is not grounds for them being a complete idiot. And we don't all hate him now you hyperbole raping blob of semisentient pig vomit.
I just emailed President Obama with an essay on why he should choose quality over quantity. :smug:

If you knew your fundamental economic principles, you would know it is important for people to get a standard level of education. This is to ensure that the economy can maintain output in the future in specialised jobs, such as doctors, lawyers etc. It also ensures that there is labour. 15 years ago, having an non competitive education system would have been fine, however in a world that has gone through something called "globalisation", to remain competitive in education is critical. For the US economy, finding people who are educated in certain areas is becoming harder, and so work is then being outsourced to other countries. This can be good, but in a considerable amount of cases, it is negative. Especially with the increasing unemployment rate.
Really, Obama's making a sweeping generalization of students based on averages and statistics, rather than looking into actual human data. Some students don't want to learn not because their school system sucks, but because they don't want to receive an education to begin with. Meanwhile, the students, like me, who strive for a higher education in a flawed economic environment, have to get lumped in with them as one dull, blemished blob that represents everyone as a whole
So you call it a flawed economic environment, but then you say unneeded economic recovery plans are shit? What? I have no idea what "actual human data" is, but I'm fairly sure statistics are based off human data. To find out what each state is getting, comparing them between each other on a standardised test is real human data, and shows a great deal about the quality of the education between states.
oh yeah, and his unneeded economic recovery plans are shit
This is just a contradiction to many of the points you've raised. So anyway, seeing as how it's shit, please recommend to me how you would combat rising unemployment, falling GDP (economic growth) and slowing inflation? Hmm?

HAHAHAHAHAH
In all seriousness though this is just a result of the constant teaching of a 9 hour work day to all Americans. You will do an hours worth of work and sit for 8 hours, what a great philosophy no?. Yet we send our little Jimmy's and Sarah's off to ludicrously overpriced colleges so they can graduate with 80+ grand of debt from loans and then- BUT HEY! THEY WILL HAVE THE BEST JOB EVER! Sorry kiddo, 41%+ income tax will pretty much shoot up your salary if it's anywhere in the 6 figures. Then you add on state taxes, federal taxes, bills... We set our kids up to become failures. We tell them if you do not go to a college your life will mysteriously end, the truth is if you do what you love to do and make money on it you've already won. Grats. Throughout our lives this chart is pushed through our heads, 1) SCHOOL IS FLAWLESS 2) TAKE POINTLESS CLASSES SO YOU GET TO STAGE 4! 3) YOU GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL! COLLEGE TIME! 4) ???? 5) PROFIT It's really sad to me anyways, to see so many kids go through the educational system that educates them not to follow their dreams because they are too outlandish.
I just emailed President Obama with an essay on why he should choose quality over quantity. :smug:
i agree. we should get rid of all fucking stupid kids who sleep through class. Students are the fucking reason why our education system is broken. THEIR the quantity. School gives them the tools to become successful in life, if they won't use it, fuck them. Let my tax money pay for kids who appreciate school. Do you tax-money wasters know what the fuck your wasting? Kids in 3rd world country, from 9 to 12 is stuck carrying heavy loads of sand to make 12 cents, when they could be taking your seat in school. I just watched this documentary of a 11 year old kid carrying 20 pound of heavy sand in his pack, carrying up hills and miles, just to make 12 cents. He was crying while he told that his father is dead, and his mother is a poor farmer, that he would definitely appreciate education to have an opportunity to use something many ignorant kids use for granted. I have absolutely no sympathy or complaint against this new education bill of cutting summer school short. In fact, I support. I can't believe kids actually say shit like 'DURR, TEACHERS DON'T DO ANYTHING, THEY DON'T TELL US ANYTHING USEFUL AND MAKE US DO WORK'. Oh hey, maybe if you stop sleeping through class, you might actually change your view.
l
Most teachers don't fucking do their job though, most of them nowadays just throw books at kids and tell them to read/do everything in the book before x amount of time.
One of my teachers recently told me that he no longer cares if we pass our final tests, simply because our state is low on money for education, and he no longer gets a bonus for us passing.
What a passionate, dedicated man.
