I just noticed that this hasn't been posted, it usually gets posted in every other "x causes cancer" thread.
It's funny because quite a few of those actually do cause cancer if you take enough of them (I remember that study a while ago that too much red meat was likely to cause bowel cancer) I do get what Zeke is saying, you can't just dismiss them all out of hand.
Then again, there are so many that it's impossible to avoid all of them. My view is this : if you exercise, eat reasonably healthily and don't smoke, you're doing all that needs to be done to avoid cancer. If you get cancer, well... shit happens. It happened to my dad, he got brain cancer. [editline]1st June 2011[/editline]
That's somewhat the problem IMO, everything can cause cancer but people blow minor risks out of proportion so when something that really is bad comes along no one takes notice.
This is exactly what I think, it's also the same on a larger scale with conspiracy theories, people tend to dismiss actual apocalyptic possibilities such as asteroids because there have been so many stupid predictions that nobody expects anything to happen. It all stems from a lack of public understanding of science. :sigh:

I got a smart phone so I got nothing to worry about right?
Cellphones, on the go cancer? Give these to our enemies, and in about 50 years, BAM. All gone.
I got a smart phone so I got nothing to worry about right?
Apart from destroying the planet by buying useless trinkets full of rare earth metals whose extraction produces millions of tonnes of industrial waste every year, nothing at all [editline]1st June 2011[/editline]
Cellphones, on the go cancer? I'm a loner therefore I never use my cellphone therefore I am not even at risk here. [editline]31st May 2011[/editline]
Cellphones, on the go cancer? Hey guys, here is this thing x, 100 people who used x had cancer. It is obviously a carcinogen.
Throughout my entire life, I have owned a cell phone for a total of one week. Never even used it, either.
We've introduced an extremely large amount of brand new technology that we've never seen the effects for to the newest generation.
We've introduced an extremely large amount of brand new technology that we've never seen the effects for to the newest generation.
Kinda why its important we examine the long term effects. Just look at asbestos.
Ionizing radiation isn't the only cause of cancer. Maybe the radiowaves interfere with one of the many proteins that deal with DNA. Not saying that it does, it's just stupid to assume it doesn't.
And if that's the case then say goodbye to your precious life because the ENTIRE universe is quite literally filled with microwaves! You ever heard of the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation? It's the radiation left over from the big bang, and guess what; it fills the entire fucking universe. This is ridiculous. There was another article a few weeks or so back that I was trying to explain these points to people in, but every time I manage to explain this shit to one person, ten more pop up (this thread) who don't understand.

(Not exclusively about cancer, but it's better than Russell Howard.)
I don't even own a cellphone, so, meh.
Can they put this in a memo, and entitle it Shit we already know
Well its a good thing I only ever have made about 5 calls on my cell
Next time someone tells me to call instead of text, I can tell them that putting the phone close to my head causes cancer.

Good job being elitist about it when you don't even bother to think through your arguments.
Except that background radiation is very weak and may be especially weak for the frequencies that have an influence. Good job being elitist about it when you don't even bother to think through your arguments.
The CMBR has a frequency of about 160GHz. This is SIGNIFICANTLY higher that the frequency at which mobile phones operate. The general rule with radiation is 'the more energetic it is, the more damaging it is', and, given that energy is directly related to frequency, the CMBR should be more damaging to your health than mobile phones.
I could have sworn that radiation took ages to wear off, that it accumulated throughout your lifetime, and thats why you NEVER want to enter radioactive areas, because it just compounds over your lifetime.
you don't wanna enter radioactive areas because it destroys cells and can cause burns or mutations in your cells. you'll die if you lose the ability to digest food or produce blood cells. radiation doesn't "store" in your body because it doesn't make you radioactive. [editline]1st June 2011[/editline]
Somewhere I heard though that humans actually get Cancer several times a week, it's just that our immune system usually manages to fight it off before it becomes a real problem.
cancer is a dangerous and abnormal growth of cells so no

Or does it have to be one that doesn't function correctly and starts replacing those that do?

Some of it must get through, just not a lot. It's like saying an inch or two of lead will stop gamma rays. It'll stop MOST gamma rays, but not all of them. And, after all, you could still get cancer from the 1 or 2 that stray through.
you don't really "get" cancer like, nothing really causes cancer either you could keep away from carcinogens completely and still develop cancer
Of course you could, I'm not saying that. Surely you know as well I do that things like ionising radiation (high frequency UV, x-rays, gamma rays, etc) occasional strip the electrons from atoms in DNA, though, which, long story short, causes cancer.
Of course you could, I'm not saying that. I was thinking more of things like molecular vibrations, which absorb only certain frequencies.
I was thinking more of things like molecular vibrations
hehheh i could stare at that for hours
At low energies that rule probably won't apply. I was thinking more of things like molecular vibrations, which absorb only certain frequencies.
The bonds in organic molecules generally absorb IR radiation, so even then it's no big deal. Y'know, hence why IR spectroscopy is normally used on organic molecules and such. Microwave radiation has a tendency to cause water molecules to spazz out and start rotating wildly, though (which is why shit heats up when you stick it in a microwave oven). And, given that the majority of the human body is water, I can see why people might find microwave radiation worrying. Although, like I stated in another thread, you'd probably literally have to sit right in front of a line-of-sight microwave transmitter to absorb worrying amounts of microwave radiation. There's no way that the tiny intensities felt from a mobile phone are gonna have any hugely noticeable effect on you.
We first discovered that microwave transmitters could heat food, because the engineers who worked on them kept having chocolate bars and such melt in their pockets.
