The world as a whole would be better off without the UN.
Would they now? I thought that having an organisation that kept the other nations in balance would help prevent world superpowers from going at one-another's throats? Even if they aren't all that great, I can assume that the world probably wouldn't be as stable without a neutral ground for diplomatic discussion. I dunno much about the UN other than that they apparently help keep the peace, but even a sub-par neutral "guys guys calm down" is better than having nothing preventing the empires of the world going at it like wild dogs. Can we trust our own governments not to start greedily eyeing one-another's assets if there wasn't someone to keep restrictions in place? A chest-high wall's better than no wall at all, even if we'd rather have a wall that you can only get over using some kind of hookshot.
The world as a whole would be better off without the UN.
Yes, I bet the world would be better off without stuff like UNICEF and UNESCO. Urgh...
The UN has fought in many wars though. Like when they fought in Korea and Cyprus
"This is the first time that the UN will send its own troops into battle. In the past the Security Council has authorised the use of “all necessary force” but has delegated the fighting to posses from willing nations. In the Korean war the Americans were in command. In Afghanistan and Libya NATO took charge. In Congo, however, the UN itself will be responsible for artillery fire, helicopter gunships—and the inevitable casualties. Should the UN really be doing this?"
Yes, I bet the world would be better off without stuff like UNICEF and UNESCO. Urgh...
Ah yes, unicef, the organization that was caught giving charitable contributions to gun control organizations. What would we do without them.
Ah yes, unicef, the organization that was caught giving charitable contributions to gun control organizations. What would we do without them.
unicef is one of the world's most efficient and effective charities
Ah yes, unicef, the organization that was caught giving charitable contributions to gun control organizations. What would we do without them.
citation needed, unless you're talking about their open policy of fighting illegal gun trafficking in which case what's the problem here
also mandatory UNATCO joke and mandatory suggestion that the congo was better off under the belgian yoke
also mandatory UNATCO joke and mandatory suggestion that the congo was better off under the belgian yoke
I always found it rather bizarre that the Belgian king was such a horrendous bastard to the natives that the state had to annex the Congo from him. Belgium and human rights abuses are not 2 things that come readily to mind normally.
Ah yes, unicef, the organization that was caught giving charitable contributions to gun control organizations. What would we do without them.
lol yes all that charity would be completely negated upon the mere suggestion that they believed in some form of gun control. truly among the most spiteful and evil organizations
Can I just say that all Belgians are deeply ashamed of Congo We're sorry about everything We fucked up Congo from the day Leopold got his greedy little hands on it, all the way until we fucked up the decolonization (sorry :( )
lol yes all that charity would be completely negated upon the mere suggestion that they believed in some form of gun control. truly among the most spiteful and evil organizations
But, muh guns
also mandatory UNATCO joke and mandatory suggestion that the congo was better off under the belgian yoke
I think in one thread a while back, I joked that the former congo countries would have been better under Belgian hands since any time hordes would rally to kill the people in the town over, they'd be shot and told to get back to work.
Can I just say that all Belgians are deeply ashamed of Congo We're sorry about everything We fucked up Congo from the day Leopold got his greedy little hands on it, all the way until we fucked up the decolonization (sorry :( )
actually the time during which the belgian state (rather than leo) had control over the congo it was considered a model colony. there was record economic growth and infrastructure development

Congo was doing great under you guys. There was a documentary from Congo and the civilians were saying that they wish "the white men" would come back and rebuild everything.
The national image of Congo is basically "we chopped off hands of people because they didn't work 18 hours a day" so that left us with a lot of guilt
Yeah but that was when it was a private enterprise. The state took it over and was like, shit, better make it up.
The UN has fought in many wars though. Like when they fought in Korea and Cyprus

Except the Korean war was fought by the UN, the USA just supplied 80 percent of things, they were still under the UN banner though.

This is the first time that the UN will send its own troops into battle.
Man, if they only had some oil, then the entire western world would come steamrolling into their country to fix their problems for them.
The DRC is one of the most resource-rich countries on the planet.
The rebels hope to exploit this. General Sultani Makenga, M23’s main military leader, observed the UN deployment from a grassy hillside above Goma. He appeared unruffled, pointing out how easy it would be for his machinegun-toting men to take over once again the road from the airport to the UN base. “They are on our land,” he says.
it's like some sort of reverse jagged alliance
Don't forget all the American genocides. Native Americans, Africans, Filipinos. Rwanda is still a mess. People celebrate the genocide and condemn it. The government secretly aids those who committed the genocide but also throws them in prison.
What the hell does that have to do with anything? And when the hell did we commit genocide against Africa?
The world as a whole would be better off without the UN.
you do know the main reason the UN was created was essentially to prevent world war 3? i think they're doing their job pretty well.
10 years form now the UN becomes the UEF aka UNITED EARTH FEDERATION, one global army to rule them all.
10 years form now the UN becomes the UEF aka UNITED EARTH FEDERATION, one global army to rule them all.
Is that when we go to space?
I mean like, you can tell an area is just shitty when the most feared weapon is a couple guys with knives.I'm just saying, most fucking terrorizing rebel forces have little more than machetes.
Yes because there is only so much women and children can do trapped inside a church when a bunch of men armed with machetes comes knocking on the door. [editline]15th June 2013[/editline] And it all happened over 100 days too, throughout the country
Man, if they only had some oil, then the entire western world would come steamrolling into their country to fix their problems for them.
i know right? if only they had some sort of valuable natural resource, such as coltan or diamonds! then we'd go in and get rid of their cheap child labour and... oh... no we wouldn't [editline]15th June 2013[/editline]
Yes because there is only so much women and children can do trapped inside a church when a bunch of men armed with machetes comes knocking on the door.
