how do you mean restore democracy? trump is a democratically elected official. America is also still a democracy last I heard
Its the same deal when Obama was in office. Any time Obama would sneeze, Republicans would cry "Socialism!". Any time Trump sneezes, everyone here cries "Fascism!".
Same shit, different parties.

If you think this is par for the course moaning you're deluded mate.
What evil fuck is gonna replace him now? Vlad the Impaler?
Probably just Vladamir Putin

It is for modern politics in the US. If Bernie or Hillary made it to office, then it would be the same type of moaning from the Republicans.
Trump instituting transgender bans is not the death of democracy lol.

Serious question. Do you really think Obama is equal to Trump, just on a different side of the aisle?

Differet side of the isle. Dont get me wrong, I'm a firm believer that Trump is the worst president in US history, or will be. I wasn't a big fan of Obama but he did more good than bad.
Trump is a terrible person and a terrible president, but he will not be the death of our democracy.

No, but it certainly gives democracy a good hemophiliac paper cut.

Trump is a clear authoritarian, as is much of the GoP. Even if you don't think he personally is killing democracy, he's an omen of things to come if we don't stand up to this kind of bullshit.

I thought you said "same shit, different parties". If one is runner-up for worst president in history and the other did more good than bad, that don't sound like the same shit to me.
To be honest, if this study shows a marked decrease in combat effectiveness which we here in the UK have overlooked (it almost certainly won't) I'd say it would reflect more poorly on the pastoral care capabilities of the US Forces. Sadly that won't be fixed; they'll just put the entire demographic in the bin like they used to do with gays.

Trump is a vaccine. He's a taste of a disease that would surely kill us at full strength, but by mere exposure, we grow stronger as a result. He's the wake up call that we needed.

Where's the graph on how use of platitudes skyrocketed after Trump's election.
Didn't Trump basically lie about consulting with the military about the ban? I totally get why Mattis is like "not so fast, fucker. You want an informed decision, you're going to get it before we made any sudden moves."
Trump is a vaccine. He's a taste of a disease that would surely kill us at full strength, but by mere exposure, we grow stronger as a result. He's the wake up call that we needed.
I'm not sure if we needed this to be honest.
I think a steady progression towards better understanding of one another and acknowledging what we need to solve would've been a better path that having most of the damn country want our traitor-in-chief gone and have an uprising of neo nazis making their voices heard.
Although the states are gerrymandered to hell so representatives don't have to worry about getting thrown out. You also have a party and president who is actively trying to make the problem of gerrymandering worse
president wasn't elected as a consequence of gerrymandering though (unless you count smaller states having a bigger share of the vote as that)
even then, both hillary and trump were competing on the same level playing field federally.
it's especially stupid when some dipshit says "we need a military coup" because trump is a crap president. maybe i might get his argument if trump suspended habeas corpus or something but it's retarded to call for america to become a military dictatorship because he introduced a policy change you don't like

Yes he was.
he lost by 3 million votes and still became president
Yes he was.

last i checked, he won 304 to 227
Yes he was.

There are a lot of arguments to be made about how the electoral college is bad, but it working as it was intended is not one of them, I think.
Yes he was.

Not quite. The electoral college is its own system, separate and independent from but equally fucked as gerrymandered congressional districts. Trump won because the electoral college is an antiquated system; congressional Republicans won because of gerrymandering.

Youre misunderstanding me. I was not comparing presidents, I was comparing the petty complaints. "Same shit different parties" means people complain in the same exact way, only about different parties
Mad respect for the Mad Dog

The election of Trump was the sort of thing it was actually intended to prevent. Demagogues and all that.
I wonder if the_donald will be turning against Mattis for going against the decrees of their lord and savior
The election of Trump was the sort of thing it was actually intended to prevent. Demagogues and all that.
Not only that, Hillary Clinton ended up even losing a vote or two in the EC if I recall correctly.
I wonder if the_donald will be turning against Mattis for going against the decrees of their lord and savior
Aren't they already calling him "Lap Dog Mattis"?
I'd give a year's salary to be able to see the conversation these two have about this.

I agree that the transgender ban is not directly a threat to democracy, but there are other aspects of his administration that are more worrying. Most notably, the repeated firing of his associates and using executive orders to bypass the existing checks and balances (followed by throwing a fit when the checks and balances came back to bite him over the immigration ban). The entire goal of his administration seems to be undoing everything Obama did, good or bad.
The other big issue is what the cultural shifts in response to him could lead up to. His presidency has transformed the political landscape from liberals vs. conservatives into fucking nazis vs. communists. Both groups are now locked in a feedback cycle of building support off of outrage at the other group, and with the power they're gaining, I have doubts that the next presidential candidates are going to be anything but extremist. With how outraged the general public is at Trump, I don't know if people would accept another moderate Obama or Hillary-esque platform as the 2020 opposition to Trump.

You're overblowing the issue. Obama also used EOs to bypass congress when they refused to get anything done. And more people are resigning than getting fired. Its a sign that his presidency is fucking terrible, not potentially killing democracy.
The protest in Charlottesville took nearly a year to organize and they had maybe 100 neo Nazis show up on the first night. Immediately afterwards they were horribly outnumbered by thousands of counter-protesters who showed up overnight with very little prior notice. Nazis are an issue but they're not a direct result of Trump.
Trump is a piece of shit but his incompetence is no threat to our democracy.

But that's the thing - would this really have happened with Hillary as president? I really doubt she'd be a disaster like Trump is, but she's still a corporatist puppet with unclear intentions. Unless she has a perfect, unblemished presidency, it would just be another 4 years of ammunition for the Republicans. At least with Trump elected, the Republicans are on the spot, and by them failing spectacularly, at least their name will be ruined for years to come. And maybe, as a people, we can come to understand the importance of critical thinking and mutual understanding/compromise. It may sound a little optimistic, but I'm trying to make the best of things.
I hope the administration that succeeds Trump keeps Mattis on the cabinet as Secretary of Defence, he's probably the best thing that came out of this Presidency.
