Sexist Humor No Laughing Matter, Psychologist Says
hey dude, guess what: sexism against women is what is responsible for those attitudes about men
Exactly
Except it is? Men are taught to be heroes, to be masculine, to not cry and to not be gay. Society will look down if you're lacking one of these features. Sure it's more accepted today than it was some years ago, but sexism against women is not nearly as big as it was some years ago too. Anyone who thinks sexism is a problem only for women is a fool.
Have you noticed it's often men themselves who perpetuate that "men have to be tough" etc. attitude... especially in gaming communities?
just sayin'

Anyone who thinks sexism is a problem only for women is a fool.
Societal sexism is mostly aimed at women. Misandry in society is mostly isolated and largely non-problematic for men at large. Also, the fact that the stereotype for men is power, while women's stereotype is weakness and fragility, should give you a hint at why people are more concerned about misogyny than misandry.
You can still make sexist jokes. It's just that they may be more harmful than what you originally thought. It's like telling a racist joke, they are pretty much insensitive and shouldn't be told. Also, there's a difference between making fun of sexism and making fun of women. Just like there is a difference between making fun of racism and making fun of a black guy.
Yeah, I've accidentally offended people before with off-colour jokes.
A joke is a joke.
Words are real. They actually exist. They don't magically "do not matter" because of their nature as words.
sexist jokes are about as dead serious and offensive as black comedy
thanks for the expert analysis you chucklefuck
People who take shit too seriously is why we can't have nice things.
The only reason you think we shouldn't take sexism against women seriously is because you're a man~
cis white straight male here. let me tell you why racist and sexist jokes don't offend me~~~
hey did you know there's a difference between "allowed to do" and "ethically should do"
Absolutely. I think the biggest issue with this is figuring out where the line is drawn. The "kitchen joke" craze that's taken hold recently is something that I find very stupid and it's become so ubiquitous that I see it reinforcing a negative stereotype (especially given how many women no longer stay at home during the day). That could be something that I would agree is unnecessary and over the line. On the other side of the equation, I think there are some jokes that play on racial or sexual stereotypes that can be taken in good humor. Hell, look at the old Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts, especially the one of Sammy Davis Jr. Plenty of edgy jokes, but also that EVERYONE was laughing and taking it in good spirit.

The only reason I think no one should take jokes seriously is because they're jokes.

this is literally the stupidest thing i've read all week
The only reason I think no one should take jokes seriously is because they're jokes.
"hey you are a failure at life and you should go hang yourself"
see, it doesn't matter and you shouldn't take it seriously because it's a joke!
i'm going to poop on your mom at her funeral but don't worry it's just a joke!!
A joke is a joke. People who take shit too seriously is why we can't have nice things. If everyone was a bit more chill the world would be a much nicer place and you wouldn't have to be 100% political if you don't want to get screamed at.
But jokes that reinforce stereotypes and prejudice shouldn't be accepted, and they shouldn't be the norm. Why is it that we can make fun of women drivers, but not make fun of how big black people's lips are? How come we can tell a girl to go back to the kitchen, but can't go up to an asian man and say "CHING CHONG CHONG"? All of these things are offensive, and shouldn't be accepted by racially or sexually tolerant people.
You forgot, jokes are supposed to be funny. A joke =/= insult. Seems like some people on fp don't know the difference.

except telling a person to end their own life is far from making a crack about women being bad at driving.
(which they aren't before you scream that i'm sexist)

Well your loss
Facepunch is even more bigoted than I imagined!

a joke involving sexist and racist attitudes(this includes stereotypes you fucks) is inherently insulting and beyond that it's ~~harmful~~. as in does actual harm by reinforcing negative attitudes against these groups
You forgot, jokes are supposed to be funny. A joke =/= insult. Seems like some people on fp don't know the difference.
The idea is that the jokes are insulting though.
Just not to you because you aren't a woman who has to deal with societal misogyny then deal with people making jokes at your expense.
There are jokes that poke fun at gender roles and the relationships we development as men and women, and then there are sexist jokes. Big difference.
You forgot, jokes are supposed to be funny. A joke =/= insult. Seems like some people on fp don't know the difference.
People say that you shouldn't tell a certain type of joke because they aren't funny and reinforce discrimination, you say that we should accept the jokes because they are jokes and not be offended. So people say other insensitive, unfunny jokes and you say that it isn't the same because the joke needs to be funny and non-offensive!

Can you see the hypocrisy?

Well, personally, I still see a lot of "herp derp asian people have fathers that always require A+ and they play starcraft 2".
(what if you're asian, and you suck at math? How does that make you feel when everyone expects you to be good at something that you aren't? that dumb stereotype takes away the positive achievement.... good at math? because you're asian, not because you're intelligent, or worked hard.)

saying "it's a joke, brah" isn't something that should magically give anything you say a free pass

You're right, I was wrong about my views.
Since I'm curious, I'd like folks here to take a look at these two clips from the old Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts. The first is Roland & Martin roasting Don Rickles, and the second is Don Rickles roasting Sammy Davis Jr.

Am I to understand that many of the jokes that these folks are saying are jokes that, in good ethics, should no longer be told?
We need to defend our right to exercise lowest common denominator humour!!
It's better to joke against sexism than to make sexist jokes anyways, it's not that hard.
It's also why I find it funnier when a comedian jokes about himself rather than mocking other people!

Yes, these are very offensive and I'd murder these guys if I could
