Not trying to be racist, but Spiderman can't be black. It's like saying Adolf Hitler loved the Jews.
no it's quite different
Why do you guys feel the need to express the fact that you're not racists before you say something "politically incorrect".
Spiderman shouldn't be black, there.
is spiderman's colour even relevant
did you ever watch or read spiderman thinking "OH AM I GLAD HE'S WHITE"
you can pretend it's not racist but you're calling shit based on race and nothing else
spiderman can be any fucking colour it's a fucking cartoon character
trying too hard

there's no point in doing it, everyone remembers spiderman as a pasty white fruitcake, so why ruin that brand recognition
it's not even canon
there's no point in doing it, everyone remembers spiderman as a pasty white fruitcake, so why ruin that brand recognition
Because it's a different Spider-Man in an alternate universe.
The fuck? Whats next Captain America is going to be fucking Chinese or some stupid shit. If they want racial equality or diversity why don't they try to make a new super hero?
1. This is an alternate universe you idiots
2. The way this has been reported and sensationalized as if it's a big deal is pretty racist
3. There is absolutely no reason the character of a troubled, poor teenager from New York has to be white, his ethnicity is completely irrelevant to the character of Spider-Man
ITT: pasty white nerds angry that a pasty white nerd loses his job to a black man
scuse me black-latino teenager
The fuck? Whats next Captain America is going to be fucking Chinese or some stupid shit. If they want racial equality or diversity or some shit why don't they try to make a new super hero?
Same reason Activision keeps shitting out Call of Duty games instead of developing new IPs, comics are commercialized as shit and have been milking the same 1940s superheros for the past half a century, they're not gonna stop now just because an alternate universe black Spiderman makes racist people angry
The brand recognition is the suit, not the pasty white nerd.
true say
just feels like marvel is trying too hard to stay fresh though
true say

the person interviewed in the OP says the same thing
plus if they really wanted it to be fresh they'd make spiderman a woman because let's face it spiderwoman is a horrible character.
His name isn't even Peter Parker anymore.
Uhhhhhhhh, but it was specifically the events that turned Peter Parker into Spiderman. Its break everything. Its like dividing by zero.
There really isn't a reason someone can't take his place. IIRC Spiderman originally didn't have superpowers, had a mechanical web-shooting device.
man, I don't know the first goddamn thing about comics, what's the big issue here?
I'm more angry that they killed the original Ultimate Spider-man in the first place.
I just wish they wouldn't have meditated so much on the fact they were going to not make him white. They had an interview on CNN with some guy and he said there was a lot of discussion about what the race of the character should be and a number of factors where given to motivate them towards picking what they did. When you put so much thought into a matter like this, it gives the illusion that race or ethnicity matter.
I guess it's similar to what Nostalgia Critic says about a lot of girl characters in certain shows, their only purpose being to have a girl. The gender comes first, and then the character. The same happens with a lot of TV shows where they realize they aren't any minorities so they design a character around a race.

Spider-Woman is an old idea.

Unless you're saying totally redoing the character, but I don't think that would be very fresh.

I would fund that movie.

Plus it doesn't really matter what race he is, considering his face is covered with a mask.
first world problems
I think he's pretty cool.

I like his outfit better.

It's not an "illusion," per se, it might not matter biologically, but minorities still face a lot of discrimination (including the fact that they're pretty dramatically under-represented in superhero comics, which is comparatively minor, but on topic so whatever). Having more minority superheros is a good thing because it makes minority kids who read comic books feel less weird and excluded, which can really affect development at an early age.
I think it would be a lot better if they created new superheros who were minorities and gave them great stories and series, instead of just endlessly killing off, resurrecting, and retooling the same bunch of characters they've had around since the days of segregation, but the superhero comics industry is ridiculously conservative so that's not going to happen any time soon. This is a lot better than nothing.
Spiderman's been around for almost 60 years (I think close to 58 now). Honestly, I'm surprised Peter Parker wasn't switched out a long time ago, what with the constant shifting of the comic books industry.
But in all honesty, I don't see the big deal. This is no different from people freaking out at the French Muslim Batman. There's zero reason for this to be a huge deal.
Wait, Peter Parker's dead?!

I agree, but I think making a 'new' Spider Man hero seems like they're forcing it too much; plus, it's not even canon. Creating a new hero who's also a minority would make a lot more sense.
Wait, Peter Parker's dead?!
In Ultimate Spider-Man, yea.
Maybe he'll run across Carnage. I'd like to see someone with no powers fight that maniac.
Spiderman wasn't very interesting anyway.
Way too tame for marvel. Only like, two people die the whole series.
Pfft, Deadpool dies about five times an issue. :colbert:
