A Guru3D Modder just found out how to make Watch Dogs look like the E3 2012 Buid

I'm wondering if they notched the graphics down a bit largely for gameplay reasons? The early footage is very dark, and seeing things in combat (without cranking up the gamma) wouldn't be the most enjoyable experience ever. There is a difference between how a game like this and a simulation like ArmA should treat darkness and ambient effects. Too much clutter from effects isn't particularly playable.
Though it did look very pretty.
Why would you put DoF on? In pictures it can look good, in motion it looks awful.
It can look good if it's not overdone. GTA 4's DoF is rather subtle (and for some reason EFLC blurs the whole screen, yuck). You can barely see it when you're in motion and it works well.
The DoF just doesn't make much sense in motion. I haven't tried the latest build to see what tweaks have been made, but on the previous one I tried yesterday, it was ridiculous and very twitchy.
You would think Aiden was losing his eyesight. Looks better in the videos above.
I find it hilarious that a single, unpaid guy can do better than an entire studio with development experience and all the resources they need.
Those road and water textures look REALLY nice.
It's rarely ever a technical road block to make these games look this good, it most always comes down from poor management wanting to put focus else where.
It's such fantastic work, but does anyone else get the feeling like it's just another ENBseries type of style? A lot of things seem REALLY blown out - the contrast, the lens flares etc etc.
I'd love to see a PROPERLY fine tuned version that matches the E3 vid as closely as possible.

They notched it down so it wouldn't look too much better than the PS4 version. There's no other explanation. The files are there, they deliberately disabled it to tune the PC version down. If it was for performance reasons they would still keep it in the settings. [sp]The patch actually improves the performance.[/sp]

Sleeping Dogs actually had this, but it was free

What conceivable benefit could making the game look worse just so it doesn't exceed another platforms version bring? They didn't massively lower the graphics of other titles on PC (Far Cry 3 looks a lot nicer on PC, just one example). The videos posted really don't look like something that would be actually fun to play, it's very dark, desaturated looking, and a bit of a strain on the eyes if you were to be fighting in it.
Great for screenshots and promotional material, not so much for gameplay. I wonder why the shaders improve performance, that's really fucking weird.
Great now I can't access the site.

The other platforms will benefit from it.

It's not the shaders alone, he did a lot of other fiddling like changing the cache sizes, particle density, fog distances, shadow resolution and stuff like that, even the preset high and ultra quality settings default into something else now.
The other platforms will benefit from it.
Not enough to justify it. The people who buy it on PC aren't likely to buy it on PS4/ XBone just because they look the same. The people who were going to buy it for their consoles won't bother buying it on PC (they may not have a PC that can run it in this case). The people on the fence are likely to buy it on whatever platform they prefer the most, especially if all they did was match the graphical settings across platforms.
If they made the PC version look outright worse in every way you might have a point, but right now this is just conspiracy theory nonsense.

Aha, that makes a lot more sense then :v:
It probably ended up looking worse on PC because the development of this game was a total shit-fest. It's almost the perfect example of how not to make a AAA game.
Sleeping Dogs actually had this, but it was free
IIRC that was a high resolution texture pack that was released shortly after the game itself. So that's not really the same thing.

So how do you combine those two mods like in that video?
So how do you combine those two mods like in that video?
You unpack both mod files and then repack them together.
The guy who made that video used this. http://svn.gib.me/builds/disrupt/

Everything was there in the first place. I guess Ubisoft just rushed it and didn't quite optimize and set it up well to use the actual assets.
Aka, the build used in the PC is probably the same as the console build with a few upgrades and all of the E3 tucked away like christmas decorations.

Nope, quite a few of the improvements here aren't just graphical, the stuff he's digging up includes optimizations that make the game run faster.
That lens flare looks ridiculous and like everyone else has said that DoF is really shitty.
Why does everything AAA have to be a ~cinematic~ experience nowadays? Kind of annoying especially when the execution is shit.

I know it's opinion but where I live that's almost exactly how dark it can be for me when I'm out walking at night.

I'd say the car headlights in that photo are the real issue; they're way too bright like everyone out on the street is driving with their high beams on for some reason.
Contrast looks a bit high too, but if there aren't any street lights or lamps nearby, it kind of makes sense that some areas would be almost perfectly dark. That screenshot looks like a crappy ENB that you'd see someone post, to me at least.
But either way the level of improvement is amazing. Too bad the mod doesn't actually make the game better else I would buy it :v:
If they were driving with their high beams on the whole street would be lit up as it's a much, much wider beam, they're a bit too bright but not really anything like a high beam.
IIRC that was a high resolution texture pack that was released shortly after the game itself. So that's not really the same thing.
Dragon Age 2 and Skyrim did that as well
More games should follow suit!
why would they downgrade it in such a way to start with? it doesn't make any sense..
My guess is they couldn't get it to that level on consoles, and even though they could on PC they decided to tone down the graphics on PC so as to not undermine the console versions even further.
Despite being tech-heresy of the truly vile kind, apparently this is standard triple-A practice since they still believe console is where the big money is, 'cause it's usually cheaper to buy a console.
Also, considering the ability for controllers to integrate with PCs, which is the only advantage consoles would otherwise have when dealing with certain genres, consoles really should be irrelevant, but aren't because of general ignorance, the standard difficulty of building a machine, a gross lack of respect for the superior technical machine, and all sorts of companies playing the game of using inferior non-exchangeable hardware to try and swindle the most money they can off of the unwashed uneducated masses (harsh I know, but I don't sugar-coat things since that'll just make people get overweight).

All it needs now is a waaaaaay longer draw distance.
Also lol, puddles actually reflects the world as opposed to windows WHYYYYY.

I am kind of wondering, is there any possibility that since the PC was apparently a lead development platform, for some incompetent reason prior to porting the game they disabled certain graphical options to match what a PS4 or a XB1 is capable of and just never bothered putting them back on?
I mean most of the mod just enables things that are already ingame as far as I understood, so the developers did make all of that, what was shown at E3 and just decided "Meh lets disable it for no reason".

They should have an orange glow, not like the streetlights but around the edges the light fades orange.

The reason doesn't matter that much in this case. The fact that this one guy was able to do all this without even a source code draws a horrible picture of Ubisoft.
god damn it looks like actual photos or concept art
I don't even own the game but I want it now
See look fuck it what was the point of even adding gameplay if people were just buying this game for graphics.
Anyway, sick as hell.
one problem I saw in the WebM files is that the headlights seemed to be freaking out when the cars moved, right at the start of the light hitting the ground near the car. Not sure if it's geometry clipping from the cars or just a weird issue with their shadow engine but that could explain why that feature in particular got turned off
