isn't it more like science fantasy?
Which is...fiction?
The only thing that is weird about the crossguard is that it's totally ineffective. It might just be an aesthetic choice but if some hits you with a lighsaber on the crossguard, the lightsaber would automatically be deflected and slide down towards the hilt where no protection is, cutting the hilt in pieces. Crossguards like that are mostly designed to get your opponents blade somewhat stuck in your sword and to protect your hand.
Sorry if this seems pretty nerdy but that was just my initial thought. Although Star Wars was never really about accurate science-fiction. It's more of a space fantasy thing than anything.
If the hilts made of a lightsaber resistant material then it would be effective. Infact if the hilt is made of Cortosis any lightsabers that hit it would short out.
Which is...fiction?
don't be a dummy.
the clear difference between science fiction and science fantasy is that the former is more about the science, elaborating on how the technologies and such within the story function and maybe even basing a great deal of the story around a certain kind of science, while the latter is more about fantastical and, one could say, completely implausible fairytale elements that coexist with proper (and made up) science in an universe.
it's the difference between the work of Isaac Asimov/Arthur C. Clarke and the lore of Star Wars/Warhammer 40k; the former is philosophical and/or speculative narrative about science and its use, the latter uses real science when the plot requires it while at the same twisting it and throwing it into the same setting with mystical forces and other tropes that originate from tales of sword and sorcery. this is the way i've understood it at least, and it makes sense to me. science fantasy is a bit of a subgenre of sci-fi and they can overlap and fuse, but sometimes it's best to keep them separate, like when dealing with Star Wars.
of course you already knew all of this and were just nitpicking for the fun of it but whatever

It's all science fiction to me. Why dissect it so much as to debate the difference between two different shades of the same color?
And, at least for the original trilogy, there's plenty of philosophy in Star Wars that can be read out of the story as much as from a story from Asimov.

This seems far more sensible and good looking. I really like the flame like aura around the blade. It's a nice twist to the usual lightsabers you see.

oh for fucks sake
yes, there is a difference between Asimov and Star Wars. We can use terms to describe this difference.
It's fucking science fiction, it doesn't have to make any sense.
There's no sense even talking to someone about fiction in general when they're willing to say things like this.

By that logic, Cthuhlu and Lovecraftian horror is sci-fi.
I never got why you wouldn't just switch the saber off when swinging and power it up again when you have gone past the attempted parry.
Maybe the cross guard will be used more to deflect shots that saber combat or even turning on just the cross guard and throwing it like a force controlled boomerang. Makes for some interesting situations if they decide to innovate.
Because something something the force.

Just noticed this anyway:
In case it's not "exhaust", as Reddit thinks it is, this design would be awesome if it weren't for the reversed bend there. The handle is supposed to be shooting the plasma out to form the beam, not the other way around. Looks like the burny-shit is flowing INTO the hilt here.

Star Wars is just fantasy IN SPACE
The force is literally magic

Looks like something out of Pixar with those eyes.
Heh heh, that soccer ball thinks it's a droid :v: .
If people are this upset about 90 seconds then I can't wait to sift through the multiple threads filled with madbutts.
It looks like he dramatically busted out his lightsaber to cut down that little tree
Wow okay.

Sounds good.

I don't understand how it's any better. I mean, sure it looks better, but if the exhaust theory is true, this redesign doesn't make any sense. Well, it already doesn't. If I'm looking at it right, the light coming from the handle just splits into 3 directions for no reason. Energy doesn't bend like that by itself.
Why do people think they can outsmart the artists behind a Star Wars movie? I'm sure there's a reason the saber looks the way it does, they wouldn't redesign it unless they had a strong concept and reason for it.

It's incredible how among the tons of nonsensical tech in Star Wars, it is the laser sword having the wrong kind of laser exhaust, that makes all the nitpicking nerds come swarming out of the woodwork.

Lightsabers aren't actually lasers or light, it's plasma that holds it's shape with a force field. That's why they interact with other lightsabers three way that they do in the movie. The field doesn't have to hold the plasma in a straight line.
[editline]30th November 2014[/editline]
And it's space wizard magic anyways.
New storm-trooper armour is sweet, ive always loved how the troopers got a new design with each film.
The cross-saber idea is really cool, ive always found the whole concept of each light saber being unique and custom built to suit its wielder's style and personality very appealing.

According to old extended canon (which may have been retconned away) they're literally light. Hence why crystals are required to construct a light saber, and why they have 'light' in the name. There's actual work at the moment being done on solid light!

While I agree with the design points, I don't agree with the second paragraph. There are a million ways that 3rd parties could outsmart Star Wars artists...because Star Wars artists design things to look cool, not to function well.

I always assumed that science fiction was fiction that isn't thought to be presently scientifically possible, hence it was fiction of science. Gulliver's Travels, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Star Wars, and The Matrix are all not presently possible, thus they are science fiction.
Gulliver's Travels, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter
Uhh what
Uhh what
Well, seeing as they aren't scientifically possible, they're fiction of science; science fiction.
Besides, I know for a fact that I've seen at least Gulliver's Travels under Science Fiction.
I thought it was a ventilation shaft
if it's a crossguard then that's dumb as fuck.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/yd64y1R.png[/t]
It's redundant because you could easily shift a lightsaber in a way that it would cut the blade off
[editline]29th November 2014[/editline]
but then again apparantly there's some fucking lore that explains that
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-switch/wp/2014/11/28/lightsaber-critics-say-the-one-in-the-star-wars-teaser-could-never-work-theyre-wrong/
are people actually complaining about the science... of a science fiction movie
do people not understand the point of science fiction or something? It's science fiction, of course it's impractical. It's a fucking sword made of lazer beams and you're questioning the logic of an alternative design of the light sabers?
You don't see me complaining about the practicality of warp drives or how stupid it is that warp 10 causes such silly effects, because I understand that it exists within a theoretical science fictional world and suspend my belief and immerse myself into the science of that world. Star Trek has far more complicated technology, too, and I still don't question it so much that I question simpler things this hard.
I sit back and enjoy the plot and story for what it is. Great Science Fiction. Star wars is AMAZING science fiction at its worst, but it does have its flaws. But of all the things people complain about it's something as minor as that.
The cross saber is physically impossible, and I feel that by adding it they are ruining the movie
You know what else is physically impossible?
light sabers.
It's science/fantasy fiction.
Maybe eventually we can make legitimate full blown light sabers just like in the movie but until then how do we actually know that that is impossible.
You know they have to at least SOMEWHAT stay in reality or else the whole thing just falls apart
I take it you walked out on harry potter muttering "dude that's dumb magic doesn't exist"
considering they have light sabers being carried by magic space wizard knights who can sense the future and use what is basically magic (the force), to telekinetic-ally move things with their will I don't think star wars is even slightly realistic.
Lets not even mention all of the space ships, robots, clones, and everything else.
I never got why you wouldn't just switch the saber off when swinging and power it up again when you have gone past the attempted parry.

In the original films, lightsabres took a few seconds to extend fully. By the time it took to swing past their parry and reactivate the sabre, any Jedi or Sith would have jumped away or sliced you into oblivion.

Here is how that Ball Droid works supposedly.
This was posted 4 days before the trailer.
I'm scared about how much leaked material is actually true.

So your definition of science fiction is literally the same as fantasy?
