RIP YouTube: New YouTube App Code Shows Pay To View Is On The Way

Gut feeling (or common sense? I'm not sure of the different between the two) seems to say this is more for new material, TV shows perhaps, rather than old stuff suddenly going paid. Or perhaps the videos come out first for the paid subscribers and then later on free.
well you can buy movies there already
to be honest i wouldn't mind subbing to a paid channel for a tv show - with full episodes and stuff

NOW IF ONLY IT WORKED IN RUSSIA
And suddenly dailymotion isn't looking half bad

Oh yes it is, very much so
I've watched movies on youtube for $$$ because of its ease of use. I don't see much problem with this, only idiots would set their video's to pay to view since.
I hate people that go insane over bullshit like this. It will obviously only apply to things it already applies to like full movies and going forward, to TV shows.
If the pay to view option allows you to drop ads (I guess it would be up to the channel owners) then that looks like it could be pretty cool.
And if anyone applies it to their videos then don't watch them? Who cares.
Youtube piracy begins.
Why is this a big deal? I was under the impression that YouTube was a massive moneypit for Google anyways. I think this is a good idea for a select few channels out there that might actually do really top quality stuff, while also having free stuff.
It's not like this will replace youtube and people like Pewdiepie will start charging. Imagine instead we have an alternate TV of sorts, where you can get actual TV-show like stuff going on Youtube but made for youtube and is pay-to-view. It'd be pretty cool if done right, is cheap enough, and ad-free. Granted I can't imagine me spending money on stuff like that but hey, I'm all for people regularly making really high quality works that are more than your average length of YT video content and having it on a "premium" channel of sorts.
We could easily see stuff like indie movies use this as a massive market, almost like Youtube becoming the "steam" of film. Indie movies or "TV series" that can't get a theatrical release put up some trailer/teaser content on youtube and then release the full movie/series on YT exclusively with it being pay per view.
I don't understand how people can think that this is going to be for the whole site and not an option for specific channels that they will choose on their own
It's probably because you can already pay for films on youtube.

Oh wow, most of movies there are Asian/African/Indian/Spanish/Other unknown language, what the fuck.
google's not stupid. they know youtube is a cornerstone of a lot of people's daily lives. they will not fuck with the infrastructure like this. at most it will be an opt-in for certain channels, if it happens at all
They could simply leave it to the uploaders. Quite a few of them are frustrated by ad block, but they'll need to decide for themselves if they have what it takes to supply people with both free and ad-free premium content.
Even with 2+ ads, hour long videos must be some sort of expense...
Either uploaders will pay dues and allow more ads, or the viewers pay via subscription; of course there is more business behind this all.
The slow downfall of YouTube.
Sure, it may be opt-in for this pay-to-view thing, but from the looks of how awful the site is becoming, it may just be the time for a new competitor to come in.
I'll still be using YouTube, just for the fact that everyone else is using it at the moment, too.
It's unfortunate there isn't really any real competition for YouTube.
I've stopped uploading there after getting a shitload of false copyright claims from, I assume, my "friend." I don't have the energy to try to fight the creep anymore and YouTube doesn't give a shit about it being false. Unfortunately any other site I tried isn't really all that great or too limited.

Yeah, fuck Google for trying to think of some noninvasive ways to not lose as much money on Youtube as they presently are.
Personally, I'd prefer to pay some money each month to get rid of all the ads.
They should adopt that sort of Spotify payment style where videos are free with ads but you can pay to get rid of the ads.

People will just use Adblock anyways, so unfortunately it wouldn't work too great.
What maybe work though is if the paid viewers, for the channels that are paid, got access to the videos before the free users. Something like 2 or 4 weeks. Or a limited amt of free videos per day.... but people will bypass it too, unless its linked to accounts, which I'd rather not have (just old paranoia about video tracking again).

YouTube 2005-2013
More like YouTube 2005-2006 until Google comes along
Someone posted on reddit claiming to have insider information. There's a very high chance of it being fake info, but it at least does a good job of explaining the possibilities of such a system:
I'm breaking NDA to say this, but they're even pushing to host their own TV shows. YouTube is planning on making a YouTube exclusive series.
Discovery has shown interest in the program already, they're willing to put all their shows on there. You pay a fee like 10$ a month and you get to watch any show from the Discovery network anytime you want.

It includes ALL networks on the Discovery network. When you're playing for cable, you pay maybe 10~50$ for these TV channels a month. Very little of that goes to Discovery directly. The real money is in the ads.
The 10$ through YouTube will end up making them more money than through TV while STILL having ads. It's a win-win for TV networks. (Or rather, soon to be not TV networks)

Youtube has been profitable since about 2008. Though I don't blame google for wanting to make it more sustainable.
You forget one of the main features of the internet is how free nearly everything is. Plenty of people don't have the ability to even pay for things online. The moment any sort of paywall is put up, people drop off. It's best for only specific audiences, likely older viewers who have income and don't mind paying a bit.
The point of this system is for big big channels and do this this professionally, have editors, and dedicated staff to create internet TV basically. Revision 3, Machinima, RoosterTeeth, etc.
It's going to likely be a channel specific. A group like Machinima could make a channel like Prime, which is a series, but not all that frequent, and make it normal advertisement based. And then they could open up a more frequent channel with daily animations, news, etc all AD free and they can likely set their own rate of maybe 1-2 dollars per month or something.
This is for channels that have a very solid schedule for uploads and provide something that is probably very unique. I'd pay a few bucks per month for a few channels on youtube if they were more consistent. Youtube is looking to build it's own TV replacement.
Unless you're a teenager, you have a debit/credit card and can purchase things on the internet. I know no one who hasn't purchased something on the internet at some point or another.
So long as folks I watch like TGS don't go premium, I'm not so upset. But still, pay-per-view is a very milky kinda deal; I'd honestly rather have it as a reasonable one-off than a parasitic leech. At least then I don't have something on my nipples all the time.
This is really cool, stop freaking out. Maybe they'll start putting TV shows or whole networks up you can subscribe to and watch. You won't have to pay to watch your favorite pewdiepie though, so don't panic.

Oh, you mean a huge amount of youtube's traffic?

I live in Canada and my debit card cant be used online unless there's Interac or PayPal or something or I get a prepaid (and you end up losing money from the activation fees). I couldn't get a credit card even if I wanted to because I'm unable to hold a job. It's really annoying at times.
Oh, you mean a huge amount of youtube's traffic?
Say again? 59% of YouTube's traffic is above the age of 35. I had my first debit card at the age of 14.

This'll probably be used on channels like Vevo, and will most likely have the alternative of watching more ads if you don't pay

(just me speculating but it's a logical guess)
Where the hell am I gonna watch Freeman's Mind and Red v. Blue?
Probably nowhere since Machinima seems content to not work with him at all.
