Is google really capable of this kind of shit? I can't believe it.
If they make it like twitch, so free users will get ads, and you can pay like 5$/month for no ads. I wouldn't mind that too much tbh, and if it's just for like TV networks to set up their program on youtube, for a monthly subscription I wouldn't really mind that either.
Is google really capable of this kind of shit? I can't believe it.
last I heard, youtube was a huge money sink for Google so what's wrong with wanting to make a few dollars? (or perhaps just break even)
People crying about the death of you tube are bloody stupid this is a PPV service if anything this will muscle in on cable providers territory and isn't that what everybody wants?
People crying about the death of you tube are bloody stupid this is a PPV service if anything this will muscle in on cable providers territory and isn't that what everybody wants?
yeah it's not the death of youtube, but people in the internet like drama so this is expected people even make scams of how services like MSN etc. will start charging for no other reason than to stir drama. This is nothing more than that, only this time the service will start charging for select things. God forbid it wants to make money so it can keep YouTube alive!
Say again? 59% of YouTube's traffic is above the age of 35. I had my first debit card at the age of 14. http://www.youtube.com/yt/advertise/demographics.html
Doesn't that mean that the amount of traffic youtube gets for 35-49 is 59% of the US population? Edit: that page is related to advertising reach, not really pure traffic numbers. And then we need to break down who of those viewers is viewing a channel that is even eligable. Apparently 30% of all the videos on youtube make up 99% of the views. So we can probably assume not all 30% of those are partner videos, and then we can probably direct our study to the number of viewers who view videos of channels that could go into the program. If say 50% of those hits are on content that is online movies, tv shows, music videos, all of which are ripped, it makes no difference. Those are monetizable at all. This still does not debunk the idea that a paywall, no matter how small, can have a big impact, because plenty of viewers don't have the means to go past it. I'm not saying that people won't do it, but your mention of having a debit card at 14 is fine, but that's not always the case. I got my own card at 18. Some people even later if they don't use a bank. Some cards aren't accepted everywhere. Advertisements are almost fool proof.
its probably just a feature length movie service
If they do this it better be for certain videos.
I dont even bother paying for netflix, why would I want to subscribe to something other than music or a TV channel?
It says 'subscription'. It's going to be like twitch.tv where you can watch the stream (video) but if you want to subscribe you have to pay X amount per months or whatever.
They've been going about this pretty quietly because they know people will flip the fuck out when or if their favorite videos and channels decide to go PPV. And adding any sort of pay wall to content is usually a slippery slope. "Hey, we're making loadsemone from people opting into to make people pay to watch their videos, why don't we take it further and make the most popular videos, the ones that get the most views, pay per view? Imagine all the money we can make from funny cat videos people forward to each other at work!" can quickly go to "Let's just make everyone subscribe in order to upload or view content, MORE MONEY MORE MONEY". Of course Google won't be stupid enough to go as far as making all of Youtube a pay service since they know their massive userbase will disappear practically overnight, but companies have done stupider shit.
The amount of shitstirring in this thread is amazing i mean christ nothing bad is going to happen from this, it's a system maintained by users, it's both impractical and unethical to make users pay to view content that youtube has had no hand in creating It will obviously be opt-in and will pave the way for higher quality works on youtube and will probably assist in making internet-only release films legitimate in the public eye, not only that but it will provide more profit to the creators
lol how exactly does this "kill" youtube Do you really think Pewdiepie and Gamegrumps and Continueshow are gonna start charging people to watch their videos or something? protip they won't, their main audiences aren't allowed to use credit cards yet this is probably for full movies/TV show episodes or content of that quality, OR people who actually do want to charge for their content because they put a lot more work into it or feel that the ad money thing is unreliable or otherwise worse than just having people pay for videos
