7 nuclear power plants temporarily shut down in Germany
Also, the thread title is a bit misleading.
Agreed, I changed it despite it being BBC's.
When I read the original thread title, I thought "Seriously? Shutting down your plants after the one in Japan withstood not only an 8.9 earthquake, but a tsunami?"
Read the post: "Oh, that makes sense I guess..."
Too bad we can't turn ignorance into energy, there seem to be an unlimited supply of it.
Yea, throw some republicans into a room.
There would be plenty of energy.
Wow this is fucking dumb. Nobody should listen to the wuss protestors. Nuclear power is the safest, renewable, cleanest source of energy you can get (as of yet).
These power plants are over 40 years old, is it really so insane to stop them to do security inspections when a plant of similar age is having problems after a catastrophe?
And nuclear power is only renewable if you happen to live inside a star.
Having spoke to some people about this it seems my previous opinion that it was stupid might have been a bit wrong.
Apparently there has been a lot of nuclear incidents in Germany over the past few years.
The main reason the plant in Japan failed was because the Tsunami washed away the backup generators.
I don't think Germany is getting any Tsunamis anytime soon, why are they worried?
Tsunamis are not the only threat to nuclear power plants in the world.

According to wiki, there has been three accidents with one almost causing meltdown.

I thought this was going to be more crisis news from japan. "oh fuck oh fuck"
Idiots. Nuclear energy is probably the greenest and best energy humans have found.
Nuclear energy is not really green, considering the radiation it spreads, the nuclear waste it produces and the fact that we don't have an endless supply of uranium. But, it's the most cost-effective method of producing power to date.

Just because they're old doesn't mean anything; they have to safety them every couple of years to bring them back up to code.
And nuclear power is only renewable if you happen to live inside a star.
Nuclear will last for a rather long time.
What's up with everyone in this thread? They're just shutting them down and doing some safety checks, nothing wrong with that, they're not permanently getting rid of them or giving up on nuclear power.
fucking paranoia
1/4 of their power, what are they retarded
They can turn off 8 at the same time and still export electricity. Last year's export was 9 billion kWh.
Most of them are really old, so it's a good idea.
Don't know why we dont build new ones.
Paranoia?
We have state elections ibln the next weeks and this is a bullshit move by the panicing conservative party currently in power.
[editline]15th March 2011[/editline]
Also Germany is volvanic area, partly. Look up the "Lausitz "

Typing from my phone. Typo.

You must be kidding, the Wikipedia article doesn't even mention that word. The last activity I know of was 11000 years ago and in a completely different part of the country.
I mean, there's a lake where you can see small bubbles of gas rising, but that's it as far as active volcanoes go in Germany.
[editline]15th March 2011[/editline]
Ok, I searched a bit more about the Lausitz. It was a volcanic area, but the only date I could find was 30 million years ago.
There was an earthquake last week or so (somewhere else), but that was 3.3.
Disasters are generally a joke in this country, compared to the rest of the world:
The last tornado was barely enough to lift a few roof tiles and the victims of the last flooding only died because they tried to carry washing machines out of a flooding basement.
The only poisonous animal that you could maybe die of is the common adder. It is gravely endangered.
convince me that nuclear power is safe FP

read the thread?
also what the fuck fp i only clicked the button once.
I don't see the problem with doing thorough safety checks after a big disaster. If you learn from those disasters and build better safety systems isn't that a good thing? Nuclear power obviously presents a huge danger when things go wrong so let's make it so things don't go wrong.
It really frustrates me that one can argue the primary reason nuclear energy has advanced as slowly as it has is due to environmentalists.
Idiots. Nuclear energy is probably the greenest and best energy humans have found.
Until accidents happen. Not against nuclear power though.
Safety Checks are good regardless of the reasoning, and considering the Age of the reactors it might be worth it in the long run.
Typical FP saying this is dumb and assuming they are doing it for dumb reasons for the first few posts, then their opinion completely changes because they didn't just read the title. Doing an analysis on nuclear plants is a good idea. I know I am beating a dead horse, but the only truly safe nuclear fuel is, well, Thorium.
This sounds reasonable. It's an understandable response considering what's going on in Japan. Quake or no quake, the plants should be checked to see if they're up to snuff.
Let's go back to using the much cleaner Coal
