FACT: Ip over pigeon is a valid internet delivery system described in RFC 1149. It has ~50% packet loss.

:D
Link reveals that this news is OLD!
On 9 April 2009, a South African IT company, The Unlimited, conducted a race to see which was faster–sending a carrier pigeon with a 4 GB memory stick 50 miles or sending the data on South African carrier Telekom. The pigeon took two hours; Telekom had only transferred 4% of the data in that time.
Geez, it wasn't that bad when I was there.
The only problem I see in this is: you have to transport the pigeon to the needed location first.

Kind of like equipment to set up a computer and access the Internet with it has to be transported.
I heard that the latency is pretty shit though.
Just joined a CSS server using a carrier pigeon and my ping was roughly ∞.
Don't even try to claim otherwise.
Yes, because we Americans like to fuck our cousins everynight, ride trucks in mud, listen to Country, and say 'ain't' and 'y'all' all day long.
People are funny.
South Africa is like Canada or Australia. Another moderately wealthy first world commonwealth nation.
On that note, the fact that their internet is such crap is astounding.
Not even nigerian pidgeons could do this.
What about Kenyan ones?
i wonder if kenyan pigeons are faster

god fucking damnit
Lol it doesn't matter where in Africa, Africa is Africa.
You have to be fucking kidding..
Africa is a continent - the continent is divided in 53 countries (I think). Each have their own geographic characteristics (Forests, Deserts, ect), people, customs, ect. Some countries in Africa are rich and hot spots for tourists and others live in poverty and hundreds of people die everyday.

Why can I picture a black guy standing at his window saying this to a pigeon while in africa?

I'm selling a lot of stuff on eBay right now, and I need boxes to put it in. But then, I saw this post and decided to donate the boxes to a more worthwhile cause.
Some of you probably blow your load in bed before the pigeon makes the trip so really none of you have the right to say anything about their net.

pigeon, eh?
now that show makes perfect sense!
That's like saying every European is a slavic peasant and every american is a hillbilly inbred
At least we hillbilly inbreds get decent internet.
How much data was even sent? It's not like more data would weigh the pigeon down.
How much data was even sent? It's not like more data would weigh the pigeon down.
2 pigeons could carry a 562gb hard drive.
150 kb/s is my maximum. We cannot physicaly get more, we asked but they say not untill your line is upgraded, but when, when will they upgrade our line?. I will keep you all updated.
You think that is bad ? :D
Try living with a maximum of 25 kb/s with a ping of over 1000, as the fastest internet you can get.
so I guess in Africa when the internet gets slow, they flip their ISPs the BIRD
So how do torrents work for Africans with pigeons?
so I guess in Africa when the internet gets slow, they flip their ISPs the BIRD
this is the worst news pun, ever.
How could they be extinct if
A. They are bred by pigeon fanciers and still used in many places in the world
B. The thread is about a carrier pigeon
The South African Navy tried to use them as Aircraft carrier pigeons.
What about Kenyan ones?
GOD DAMNIT, I was thinking Kenyans, but just wrote nigerian :(.
Well I suppose the funny goes to you.
Congratulations.
Makes me wonder how there are people on Xbox Live in Africa
They should have use African Swallows to carry coconut sized hard drives.

"Hey look, it's the new Nine Inch Nails album!"
"Eh, shoot that one carrying Photoshop CS4 first."
That doesn't make any sense, the new NIN album is free.
I live in South-Africa and all I can say is that internet is ridiculously expensive, and doesn't match up to what is being paid for it. I mean, take this for example: Vodacom is my cellphone service provider(almost like Vodafone in other countries) and ISP all in one. If I download 1 megabyte of data, I get billed two rand (R2.00) for it. Check out the exchange rates on http://xe.com (ZAR - South-African Rand). Download speeds are high-speed 7.2 mbps HSDPA (which is actually a lie, if you ask me). Every month, I purchase 2 gigabytes of data at R389.99, which reduces my costs to approx. R0.19 per megabyte, but still we hardly ever get 5 mbps. To put it in perspective, we pay around USD$45-50 for TWO GIGABYTES of data. Once you reach 2 gigs of data downloaded, you get billed R2.00 again. Same with Telkom, only difference is they have 4 mbps ADSL and is cheaper when buying data(around R180 for two gigs). But the limiting factor is line rental and modem costs. If I'm not mistaken, the modem costs well over R1000 and the line rental per month is approximately R300-R700 per month. But I still manage to play GMod and Synergy online, along with watching YouTube vids and everything.
