• Why I chose to end it all: 85-year old

This is a topic very close to me. My grandfather developed dementia shortly before my grandmother passed away due to breast cancer. It was slow at first where he'd just forget things, but got much worse once she passed. You could almost say she was keeping him together. I'll always remember when he believed me and my girlfriend were the doctors tending to my grandmother (even though this was 4-5 years after she moved on). That was absolutely heart breaking because you just have to play along with it or risk confusing/upsetting them. Things weren't always bad though, you would have the occasional "good day" where he would pretty much be himself. Eventually we moved him to a really nice care home where he spent the last few years of his life. I completely support this lady's decision to end her life because she had a good reason to, her affairs were in order and her husband was by her side.
My great-grandmother lived 107 years and last 20 years she couldn't get up from bed. I would rather die younger then spend 20 years lying hopelessly in bed. Not to mention the pain she must have felt because she outlived most of her children.
my grandmother just died last week after a long decline from dementia, alzheimers, and immobility as a result of a worsening spine condition and an injury to her hip. for 4 years my dad and uncle who live next door had to wake up at 4 Am to give her the medicine and to carry her out of bed. my dad is 65 years old and has a spine condition as well and has to use his legs rather than his back to lift anything weighing more than 40 lbs. my uncle is in his late 50s and has a bad knee. for my dad, between work and caring for my grandmother he really only has about 4 hours a day to himself. his personal life just went to a standstill. every day my dad would come back and talk about how she doesn't recognize anyone.
My grandparents have both had strokes.. they never got the chance to be in the right mental state to make the decision, now they're almost vegetables. :(
