Britain to send aircraft (Tornado and Typhoon fighter jets) to enforce Libya no-fly zone

Firstly its not NATO it is a few countries with UN backing, and secondly its not a war. It is a "policing" act. And that isn't a way of justifying an illegal war this time, it is the truth.

You don't send fighters over without the intention of fucking them up.

If they shoot down one of Gaddafi's planes I assume he's going to retaliate. They'd pretty much be declaring war on Gaddafi rather than just policing.

They're not going to send troops in, if that's what you mean by becoming part of the war.

The UN have sent "peacekeepers" into countries and never made any attempts to stop violence in the region, I don't see why this wouldn't be the same.

It still means getting involved in a war that really has nothing to do with them, the UN seem to be quite adverse to that.

See this post: http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1070360-UN-Security-Council-passes-no-fly-zone-resolution-air-strikes-expected-within-hours?p=28661858&viewfull=1#post28661858
It's more of a shooting gallery than a war if war does happen. It won't last longer than a week. Were just here to support the rebels, no boots on the ground. After we fuck up whatever Gaddafi tries to send at us the rebels will take it from there. Then hopefully they'll brofist the western world once they march on Tripoli and we'll all live happily ever after.

This isn't the UN though. It's a few member nations of NATO/UN seeing a bully beating on a kid at the playground and asked their mother if they could go beat his ass and she said sure. Once asses are kicked we'll leave.
The UN have sent "peacekeepers" into countries and never made any attempts to stop violence in the region, I don't see why this wouldn't be the same.
Peacekeeping missions are rarely sent aerial assets, especially with no ground forces. Aircraft cannot hold territory, they strike by nature.
It still means getting involved in a war that really has nothing to do with them, the UN seem to be quite adverse to that.
It passed the UNSC, that's pretty much the bureaucracy dealt with. It's now a group of very capable military powers putting into motion an extensive aerial campaign against Gaddaffi, much like NATO's bombing campaign in the Balkans.
Finally. Hopefully Gadaffi won't be idiotic enough to order his air force composed of planes 40 years old against Eurofighter typhoons.
It's Gadaffi though, he probably will.
Wikipedia is saying UK, US, France, Belgium, Denmark, Canada, UAE (Possibly), Qatar (also possibly), Greece.
Party in the sky and Libya isn't invited
It would have been hilarious if Croatia joined the UN to aid the enforcement of the no-fly zone, since our government and the ex-state government was more or less 69'ing with Gadaffi since he took power.

Don't talk to my brother like that
Norway as well.
Also, Qatar...?
Are they gonna send in their Soviet Era fighters and have them crash and burn into Gaddafis hideout?
What?

As an aside, I don't see what's all the hate against Soviet equipment, unless it was an export model

Guys this is what we're up against- I say we surrender now before our 21st century equipment has to deal with the trauma of shutting these rusty Russian cigars down without a fight.

It's hard to believe that we're going to help with no ulterior motives. Seriously, knowing our government, what's in it for us?

We're going to take the Libyan women for breeding purposes.

It's more than one country, and the UK and France are the main ones. This goes for anyone planning to be all "herp derp us world police in the middle east". I've already seen at least 3 people do this, and it's absolutely retarded.
We still have the Tornados and eurofighters which are more than enough for what they are up against. They can operate out of various bases around the med.
Harriers would not have been sent even if we still had carriers anyway, they are in use
The Tornado is a fucking joke.
They may as well attach glider wings to a wooden box and give the pilot a few grenades.
Thats how effective it is.
Kill a few for us, will ya? :smith:

You're basing your comments on... what, exactly?
The MoD wouldn't keep the Tornado in service if it wasn't up to the job.
The aircraft's mentioned.

Fresh from your rubbish about the SA80 in the other thread, exactly what information are you going on?
The Typhoon is so god damn awesome and advanced!

I remember seeing one at an airshow when I was about 8, I was scared shitless and in awe at the same time.
