same thing in china too, and japan
the endemic for young teenagers in more developed asian countries is the remarkably high rate of depression and teen suicides because they cant do well enough in school
the college entrance exams for these students is more or less the end-all-be-all for a majority of teens. if you want any chance of being able to have a decent career, the exams are pretty much the only way in. if any of you have known foreigners from these countries in your schools, you might notice that they tend to be more reclusive and dedicated to their studies; it's a pure reflection on how they grew up in their schools.
additionally, asian families put a HORRENDOUS amount of stress and responsibility for these students to do well -- its not uncommon to hear of students being starved, beat, or emotionally abused if they fail to perform exceptionally in school.
the culture's fucked up, and so is the system. no wonder these kids are killing themselves.
The parent pressure thing can get pretty intense as well. I once knew a Korean family consisting of one mother and two sons. Their lives apparently consisted of study, practicing piano and maintaining good looks in order to maximize their potential in the long term. The mother even got pissed off once when she heard I was growing faster than her sons.
