You only draw if you're going to shoot to kill. You never point a gun at anything you don't want to kill.

So this guy (an undercover cop) shouldn't have pointed his gun at the protestors who if he didn't draw his gun and point it at the group, may well have been beaten to death? The rule of "don't point your gun at something you don't intend to kill" has exceptions, this one being one of them. The presence of a drawn gun would helped deter this rock-throwing group from continuing to throw rocks at them and would have helped speed along the process of getting the guy who had his fucking legs severed to the hospital.

Uh, police hold potentially violent suspects at gunpoint all the time. It's SOP

That and they usually have weapons drawn when executing search warrants of violent suspects as well.
Also I always heard it as "never point a gun at anything you're not prepared to destroy/kill". Slightly different.

This is basically what I meant to say, I just worded it strangely for some reason.

this is armchair gun nut general etiquette, not police sop.

only number 2 to the ever so popular "trigger discipline!!!"

Given that the fuckheads were probably drunk/high/whatever it could also have gone the other way and escalated the situation even more.
We (Australian police) do things differently over here, it's that simple. We don't handle everything with guns.

Instead you hide and let a bunch of idiots endanger someone's life by throwing rocks at, and otherwise impeding, paramedics?

Oh fuck off, seriously.
Well not to play the part of the ever ignorant American, but can you to suggest an alternative course of action that would've worked in this scenario?
I mean its quite obvious that trying to talk to a mob throwing stones at you is akin to trying to push a glacier uphill.
How about exactly the way they handled it? Staying close to the paramedics and the patient to ensure their immediate safety and calling in reinforcements to disperse the crowd. It worked. The teenager and the paramedics got out safely.
It's easy for people to read an article about something like this and assume they have full knowledge of what happened and then say "Oh well they should have handled it like this." You weren't there, and the article probably made it sound far worse than it was (not defending people throwing rocks, that is fucking inexcusable). These are trained professionals and if they felt that drawing their weapons was necessary they would have done it. But they didn't. Not every problem needs to be solved by pointing a gun at it.
Why are you getting defensive? I wasn't supporting either side of the argument.
Sounded like you were saying pulling a gun was the best idea.

So you think he wouldn't use the gun if they attacked him?
So you think he wouldn't use the gun if they attacked him?
He would have, but the point is, no sane, unarmed person would dare attack the guy with the gun drawn, thus defusing the situation.
And why is he holding the gun sideways?
That's no way to use a gun.
I don't know if I'm being racist by pointing this out but no one has yet. The area this happened in its like a housing commission area for the aboriginal people. Throwing rocks is their idea of a fun night. I do not assume all aboriginal people are like this, but the ones from that area are (this happened in my home town). Allegedly they thought police were there to break up their party, that's why they were not being nice to the police. Article is being super pc by not mentioning any of that. You can find a few part examples by looking up 'rock throwing taree' (or purfleet)
