At my school the post-16 students were recently issued with photo id lanyards with a single day's warning. Is that legal?

In the UK
If it says they can do it in the contract your parents signed at admission yes, if they just came up with it, probably not.

No contract was signed when I applied and was accepted though

Impossible.

How so? I'd remember signing away little bits of freedom

Usually it's in the agreements you make when you are accepting a place in a school. Just because they didn't slap a 500 page heap of laywer-speak down in front of you doesn't mean you didn't agree to something.
Plus, y'know, what exactly is bad about issuing a photo-ID, even if it was with little to no notice? How does it negatively affect your life in any way at all?
if it's like a keycard type thing where you just tap it on a reader to open a door then i don't see the problem
Wrap it in Tinfoil, problem solved.
That would actually amplify the signal...

Hats do, completely wrapping something in tinfoil will stop signals.

I just don't like it when people/organisations abuse their authority. If they had permission I have no problem with it whatsoever.
I wouldn't wear that shit. I'd attach it to a squirrel.
And then he'd steal your identity, as he would be the real Fort83
Hell no man...

How is it an abuse of authority? Providing you with a photographic ID does nothing but assign you an identification card. If they were forcing every student to wear a GPS tracking bracelet or something, yeah I could see your point. But all it is, is a piece of plastic that says who you are.
your rights as a human being? to be treated with dignity and respect? but yeah i forgot you don't become human until you've left school
No, you still have to use RFID at college and at work. And what about the teachers who have to use it?
Did facepunch just recently take a load of crazy pills?

Because they can't force a pupil to wear something if the school hasn't said it's a requirement to attend the school, simple as that. Sure they can issue them, but if a student refuses to wear it and you don't have anything in writing stating it's a requirement, you have no right to expel that student.

There's a good chance the school updated the agreement/ code of conduct for students telling them they are required to wear it at all times.
