Scrap that, bad reading.
So the valve console will basically be a prebuilt small PC running linux?
Valve, Steam, Piston. What's next?
If they ever make an OS, it should be called Thermodynamics.
It looks like you need your own external power supply with one of those boxes(?) but does it only need 19v to run everything inside of it? or I guess the power supply is in the wall plug.
So the valve console will basically be a prebuilt small PC running linux?
It's not the Valve console. The Steambox and Piston are seperated. But yes, it will be a prebuilt but upgradeable Mini-PC, being developed by XI3 and running either Linux or Windows 7 and will use Steam and Steams Big Picture.
It's ugly. I hope they don't keep that design

I haven't seen anything yet that says otherwise. Should have called it the Gabesphere
Because Valve is just backing it up, but they aren't mentioned as the developers. XI3 is known for developing Mini-PCs.
I'm really curious how this will do in the market. I don't think people will ditch Xbox for it, but many PC players might pick one up
Should have called it the Gabesphere
The GabeCube
It looks like you need your own external power supply with one of those boxes(?) but does it only need 19v to run everything inside of it? or I guess the power supply is in the wall plug.
It looks like a standard laptop power supply. The parts are tiny so that should be enough power.
I wonder how much its graphics can take.
If they sell it with a half-life 3 demo installed, I'll be obliged to buy it. Would be a brilliant marketing strategy.
I'm being serious; could it run Crysis or Crysis 2 on Ultra? I want to know how it would preform compared to the upcoming PS4 and Xbox
Things i dislike about this is the current high price for what you get and how tiny/ugly it is, i prefer to have a thicker or one that looks more like a shoebox, a-la Alienware/Xbox/PS3
I'm being serious; could it run Crysis or Crysis 2 on Ultra? I want to know how it would preform compared to the upcoming PS4 and Xbox
most likely not.
I've seen so many consoles announced recently, yet I bet 99% of them are destined to fail. "So let me get this straight, If I want to play the latest console games, I'm going to have to buy the Oouja, the Piston, the Xbox 720, the PS4, and whatever else they cane come out with here in the next couple of years..?" Yeah fuck that, i'll just maintain my PC. They better not restrict games to the Piston. I'm going to be pissed.

I have to say I'm really, really looking forward to this. It's like, this awesome little PC that hooks up to your TV for cheap. My question, though, is- Will it act like a regular PC, or what? Also: Does anyone have any idea when this thing will be available for purchase?
Valve, Steam, Piston. What's next?
Boiler. Their new OS.
Bad idea simply because it will undermine the PC market with a standardized design which means lesser development of graphics cards, gpu etc if it catches on.
Bad idea simply because it will undermine the PC market with a standardized design which means lesser development of graphics cards, gpu etc if it catches on.
I can play currrent games with a 4 year old system I couldn't care less for better graphics, it's at a point where small improvements need tremendous jumps in hardware anyway.
"Valve will be at CES to meet with hardware and content developers in our booth space. We are bringing some custom HW [hardware] prototypes as well as some off-the-shelf PCs to our CES meetings, which are low-cost, high performance designs for the living room that are great candidates for Steam and Big Picture." "We will be sharing more information to the press and public in the coming months."
The steambox was obviously a codename for the piston, companies do this all the time, and Steambox was actually never said by Valve.
A 60W power supply and this small? It has to be using laptop components. Looks like it's either going to be quite expensive for a "console" or it's going to be a low end machine.

This is not going to be a console, it's simply one of the many ways to put a PC into your living room.
