I hate how small it is, why can't we go back to PS2 Fat sizing for consoles dammit

that is some really respectable I/O though
Well to be fair it's be really, really fucking awesome to unplug this little box, throw it in my laptop bag and go to a lan-party and be able to play Civ 5 with my friends on a decent rig.
Valve, Steam, Piston.
What's next?
Screw, Bolts, Wire, Screwdriver, Engine. I could go on.

That's really no excuse for making it that small
A PS2 fits in a normal backpack. An Xbox does, too.
Im more worried about the power of the thing, and how much heat it produces

Why are you bitching about how small it is?
Smaller makes it easier to haul around.
Edit:
And if you want to bitch about it becoming fragile or some shit, look at the video of the truck running an Xi3 over. You're not going to have any problems with this thing.

It also makes it harder to produce parts for it, and to cool it properly
do you know why laptops are expensive? because the parts have to be tiny, produce less heat, and use less power. How do you get all of those advantages? by spending more money
FYI Piston is one of many boxes and prototypes, it's not the official "Steam Box". It seems more like a small manufacturer got some grants from Valve to develop and test a box for Big Picture. I'm sure we'll start seeing more "Big Picture Certified" boxes. On an unrelated note I still haven't found any pictures of Valve's booth. Anyone know when the show floor opened today?
'For power users and gamers, there's a second device the developers are introducing: the X7A Modular. This is a much more powerful system built with the same design philosophy, but with a quad-core processor clocked at 3.2GHz, integrated graphics with up to 384 share cores, 4GB or 8GB of DDR3 RAM, and enough power to "handle graphics-rich computer games like Crysis 2 with ease." It will also be able to drive up to three high-definition monitors at the same time.
The biggest trick of all will delivering on these claims at the proposed price points, which are $500 for the X3A and under $1,000 for the X7A.'
I will keep an eye out for this small chap.

Sounds like an A10-5700, slightly downclocked (perhaps to prevent overheating?). This is going to be very disappointing for an almost 1000$ machine. That CPU/GPU combo is what you'd get if you wanted a gaming machine on an extremely low budget (I'm talking about 300€ here). If this is the expensive version, the cheap one probably won't even be suitable for gaming.
My PC is about 6 year old now and I know for sure that the next one is due in 1 to 2 years and I always wanted something less bulky, this is a very possible option for me.
Turbo
Who wouldn't want a turbo console

dat I/O. looks pretty sweet on such a small form factor. can't wait for a list of specs

Now introducing Valve's new proprietary controller port Gasket

Looks cool but can I play Half-Life 3 on it?
Here's some videos about it, I think it's awesome that you can just take out parts that easily and upgrade it. I do wish it was a little bigger though, it looks like it'd overheat so easily.
Overheat? That thing has the size of a fan and dedicates an entire face(two of them?) of the device to ventilation, whereas most computers today have like an eigth of the total space of the rear of their computer case with a fan running through it.. I bet it's cleverly designed inside too.
Plus I bet they'll stress test it for that.
[sp]right?[/sp] :ohdear:
Compared to the PS3 launch price? Not really.
Doesn't make it much better since the average game console isn't 500 bucks.

Coal.
[editline]8th January 2013[/editline]
Woops, late.
This thing looks cool, and I am hoping it has a fair price, one not too expensive.
[editline]8th January 2013[/editline]
They start at $499, are small enough to be picked up with a single hand, and have the option of running Linux if you desire. It is thought Piston will be based around the design of Xi3′s $999 X7A performance PC.
Sigh. Probably not going to be able to afford it in that case.
Valve, Steam, Piston.
What's next?
episode 3
(i wish)
I could get top-of-the-line PC parts for the price of the STARTER model.
Sorry but that is asking way too much.
And how big of a case do all that require?
And surely let's not forget the time spent on assembling & testing, man-hours aren't cheap nowadays.
That small box takes up roughly the same volume as a ½ liter cola bottle/can.
