do you understand the definition of stunning? stunning =/= big deal
I don't know, I'm pretty stunned that the US has done so well. [editline]01:10PM[/editline] In other news, the longest tennis game in history at Wimbledon is going on right now.
Just as many english call the bathroom a "loo", many americans call football "soccer". It's not like the meaning is unclear or anything. You really shouldn't complain.
I can't believe this suprises anyone anymore. i've gotten used to it and stopped facepalming when they started changed the name of Handball+wrestling/rugby to Football.
I don't know, I'm pretty stunned that the US has done so well.
im not considering their pre world cup performances but hey thats because i actually know what im talking about unlike some fat greasy nerdy fair weather fan like yourself
Blah blah blah my version of English is right because it's the one I use blah blah blah. No one cares.
it's not a version of english. it's calling something by the wrong name. that has nothing to do with the english language as it is called football in all languages.
lol footballfags
I'd say it's pretty big when a country, where most people do not give a shit about a sport, advances in a world tournament of said sport, which is the most popular sport in the majority of the countries competing in it.
im not considering their pre world cup performances but hey thats because i actually know what im talking about unlike some fat greasy nerdy fair weather fan like yourself
Chill out dude
it's not a version of english. it's calling something by the wrong name. that has nothing to do with the english language as it is called football in all languages.
no its not whats wrong with you pretty much every language has a different name for it
What? No, not really. The US has performed much better than England in general. We should have won Slovenia, and should have won this match at least 2-0, if not for bad ref calls.
That isn't important, as long as we get through the finals we should be fine. In todays match we playes markedly better and i have faith that we'll make it through the quaters. America i'm not so sure about, while you played well you just couldn't get it in and only scored in the 91st minuite from a lucky strike.
it's not a version of english. it's calling something by the wrong name. that has nothing to do with the english language as it is called football in all languages.
No. It's a version of English. Stop throwing a fucking hissyfit because someone else says something differently from the way you say it. It makes you look like a fucking child.
no its not whats wrong with you pretty much every language has a different name for it
All translating to football. No other country calls it soccer.
How come the people who complain about Americans "copying the name" don't complain about Australian rules football? Also, the term soccer originated in England. Sorry. [editline]02:23PM[/editline]
All translating to football. No other country calls it soccer.
Well what do you know? [editline]02:25PM[/editline] Oh and this:
In South Africa, "soccer" is the more common name, used by all cultural groups when speaking English. The domestic first division is the Premier Soccer League and both in conversation and the media (see e.g. The Sowetan or Independent Online), the term "soccer" is used almost exclusively. Despite this, the country's national association is called the South African Football Association and "football" might occasionally be used in official contexts. In Afrikaans, one of the other major languages in South Africa, the word "sokker" is used far more often than "voetbal".
Not even the fucking country hosting the World Cup calls it that.
I know Japan calls it both. I hear soccer more though.
no its not whats wrong with you pretty much every language has a different name for it
it translates to the same thing you fool. fútbol - spanish Fußball - german football - french fotball - norway They all look pretty similar right. and guess what, they all translate back to Football but putting Soccer in to translate from english to english doesn't come out with Football does it. therefore you're an idiot.
It's just a word guys, who cares? I agree that football makes more sense, but since American football is more popular here, it would never catch on, and thus remains soccer.

On wow my bad 4 other countries do.
Not even the fucking country hosting the World Cup calls it that.
but the people that run the biggest and most important Football league in the world call it football, and if you read your own link you'll see that it's officially called Football. link to FIFAs wiki page where you can clearly see what it stands for.
It's just a word guys, who cares? I agree that football makes more sense, but since American football is more popular here, it would never catch on, and thus remains soccer.
Just like how in Australia they refer to Australian Rules Football as football but you don't see people complaining about that.
It's just a word guys, who cares? I agree that football makes more sense, but since American football is more popular here, it would never catch on, and thus remains soccer.
at no point did I say this was a winnable arguement, I just wanted to take this opputunity to point out how fucking retarded americans are. (User was banned for this post ("Xenophobia" - SteveUK))
On wow my bad 2 other countries do.
Five, with seven if you count the green. Soccer is short for "association football" and it is called soccer in countries where there is another form of football.
at no point did I say this was a winnable arguement, I just wanted to take this opputunity to point out how fucking retarded americans are.
That's nice, I think you're being a jackass by calling us retarded by having a different name for them. We call them semis or trucks, you call them lorries. I think it's ironic you call us retarded, when you're picking the argument over nothing. [editline]01:33PM[/editline]
Five, with seven if you count the green. Soccer is short for "association football" and it is called soccer in countries where there is another form of football.
I didn't know that
+ youre forgetting the fact that american football is probably one of the worst sports i have ever seen. basically rugby but with steroid panzies and team changes every 30 seconds
at no point did I say this was a winnable arguement, I just wanted to take this opputunity to point out how fucking retarded americans are.
Why does it make us stupid? We have a local version of football and an international one, the same as Australia or Canada. Why choose to focus on America? Because it makes you look cooler I guess. I don't see why you care so much and have to call the people who call it something different stupid.
Jesus, does it really matter? Britfags will argue about anything as long as they are arguing with Amerifags.
Five, with seven if you count the green. Soccer is short for "association football" and it is called soccer in countries where there is another form of football.
That still doesn't make any sense to me.
I didn't know that
And on top of that, it originated in England. Jethro, we're so sorry for using a term that originated in your country to refer to the less popular version of football in our respective countries.
Jesus, does it really matter? Britfags will argue about anything as long as they are arguing with Amerifags.
It's called having an opinion. Get used to it.
It's called having an opinion. Get used to it.
An opinion about something that doesn't matter- AT ALL.
Why does it make us stupid?
Why does calling something by the wrong name make me stupid durrr
