That's nice, I think you're being a jackass by calling us retarded by having a different name for them. We call them semis or trucks, you call them lorries. I think it's ironic you call us retarded, when you're picking the argument over nothing.
that's what it's refered to. we call it a HGV (heavey goods vehicle), but refer to it as a lorry. but by calling it soccer instead of football, you are not refering to football as soccer, you are refering to soccer as soccer, as it's actual name rather than a common usage slang.
That still doesn't make any sense to me.
The sport dubbed "Football" is more popular here (American Football) What are we supposed to call soccer? We cannot call them both football. We cannot rename our football either, it would be a stupid move. So we're stuck with soccer. Stop arguing over something that's never going to change.
That still doesn't make any sense to me.
Because it's easier to say than having to clarify which sport you are referring to when you say something about football. What's easier? "Oh hey, did you catch that fooball game last night?" "Which version?" "Association" "Yes" Or "Oh hey, did you catch that soccer game last night?" "Yes"
An opinion about something that doesn't matter- AT ALL.
Then why do we have this forum, it doesn't matter at all does it? Nothing productive comes of it. Actually why should we have opinions on football either? Not like that matters. Infact why should we have opinions at all seeing as they obviously don't matter either. A world without opinion would be drab. If you don't like the contents of the thread you're more than welcome to leave.
at no point did I say this was a winnable arguement, I just wanted to take this opputunity to point out how fucking retarded americans are.
It's semantics. Get over yourself. I'll continue to call it soccer over here as to distinguish it from American football. P.S.: American football is named after the length of the ball. It's almost one foot long. Hence, football.

Sure the "technical" term for "lorry" is HGV but how many times have you actually heard anyone who isn't a mechanic or driver refer to it as such. I bet the same number of people in the UK who actually know the actual term is HGV don't refer to it such such as the number of people in the US who actually know the technical term is football but don't refer to it as such. The general public wouldn't call it football but people who play it do. I know several.
As an Englishman I can proudly say I don't give a shit if you Americans call it football or soccer, miss a u from a word here and there or any of those other things you guys do. It's so petty and it's pretty much all the same to me. More importantly though, good work by the American team. Everyone always counts them out before it even begins, so good going. [editline]7:34PM[/editline] If you get further than England though, I'll take that all back and claim you guys just straight up can't spell. :v:
I actually like the term football over soccer, I'm just arguing that it's a pointless argument because it's already established as soccer here.
Good man, we should get together and discuss how we kicked Germany's ass in world war 2 together.
I could imagine you just opened a whole new angry debate, seeing as how everyone's always a huge dick over that too, sadly.

Okay we get it, we're "stupid" for calling it soccer. But guess what, it's still the same fucking sport. Does it really bother you this much to whine and complain about how Americans are retarded and wrong. For fucks sake, let it go, and move on.
its a terrible sport and it should stop being played because its so bad
Because you actually know anything about it or grew up with it or anything. I play it but I hate watching it because at first glance, it looks boring as shit. At first glance cricket and Australian football look retarded as shit but I doubt the people who live there think that.
People need to calm down with this Football/Soccer stuff this is how I keep it in order Football:the International Sport FOOTBAWL: the American Sport Simple :eng101:. On a totally unrelated note LOL IMA FIGHTER JET, NEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRWOOOOOSH

Does every thread about the World Cup have to turn into a debate over soccer/football? They're the same goddamn thing. Also :patriot:
It's fine to have an opinion, but you're argument is basically "Americans are dumb because they call it soccer, and their version of football is boring to me"
I never said the American version was boring and neither did i say Americans are stupid. All i'm saying is that to call a game where you actually use your feet to control the ball Football makes more sense than calling the American version of rugby football. [editline]08:01PM[/editline]
First reasonable post in the whole thread.
Reasonable because it's what you want to hear?
it translates to the same thing you fool. fútbol - spanish Fußball - german football - french fotball - norway They all look pretty similar right. and guess what, they all translate back to Football but putting Soccer in to translate from english to english doesn't come out with Football does it. therefore you're an idiot.
FYI, in Spanish, 'foot' does not become 'fút'. Foot in Spanish is "Pie" (pronounced like pee-ay). I can't speak for Norwegian, French, or German translations, but I suspect it's similar. The phrase 'Football' isn't some pure translation across languages. It looks like other languages simply picked up the term 'Football' and put their own pronunciation into it's spelling in each of their respective languages. The US (and Canada, and Australia. . .) simply call it Soccer. That's not something to get angryabout. Boo hoo, other countries half way around the world refer to something with a different phrase. Grow up. :colbert:
That title is nearly as over the top as that time it was USA BEATS ENGLAND 1 - 1

at no point did I say this was a winnable arguement, I just wanted to take this opputunity to point out how fucking retarded americans are.
Soccer is my favorite sport. Most people are aware that football is the correct term. It's just we don't give a shit.
"Loo" is universal slang. Soccer isn't slang. Trash isn't slang.
loo isn't universal slang go tell someone in africa you need to go to the loo
and Americans suddenly care about football again
Why is America doing well thread worthy?
Why is America doing well thread worthy?
Because there are many Americans on this board, they rarely do well in The World Cup and people find it to be relevant.
Yay america :911:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA Fédération Internationale de Football Association International Federation of Association Football Football FOOTBALL Not soccer for fucks sake.
Nobody cares. At all. [editline]03:05AM[/editline]
American's call football soccer because they stupidly called handegg football instead and when they came to naming this sport with balls and feet, and kicking the balls with the feet they were like "uhh shit" and what if the room with the toilet in does not infact have a bath, you still say bathroom but this is incorrect. going to the toilet(room, if you really want to say that) would be more correct, which is what the majority of english people say. it doesn't matter if I know what they mean or are saying, it doesn't make it any less wrong. If every single country and language in the world call it one thing and you call it another AS IT'S ONLY NAME, you are wrong.
We call our football "football" because it's what football is to America. also nobody cares except for you hahahahaha usa is da best do sumthin bout it color bathroom soccer armor mom garbage program airplane jelly biscut pants truck semi-truck
this is not news, there's a world cup thread for this
