And all of a sudden, americans who normally doesn't give a shit about world cup is suddenly cheering and watching the world cup!
As an Englishman I can proudly say I don't give a shit if you Americans call it football or soccer, miss a u from a word here and there or any of those other things you guys do. It's so petty and it's pretty much all the same to me.
More importantly though, good work by the American team. Everyone always counts them out before it even begins, so good going.

If you get further than England though, I'll take that all back and claim you guys just straight up can't spell. :v:
This.

Going to watch the football at a pub or whatever with a bunch of friends is pretty much the best way to watch the World Cup. Moments like that make it really worth while.

That said, watching the England Slovenia match today in the pub was a little less rowdy than that.
Maybe thats what we get in return for that gay ass offcial in the US-England :colbert:

Here is how Soccer came to get it's name. It was invented by the British. As it turns out, 'Football' is a more general term that can describe other sports (Rugby Football became just Rugby, Association Football became Soccer) and blah blah blah

lots of overreacting Americans and butt-hurt Europeans in this thread.
What happens in the unlikely situation that the US wins the entire world cup?

I'm pretty sure Europeans would be so outraged they'd invent another sport Americans don't care about
Now I've never claimed to be a big soccer/football/whatever fan, but I've really enjoyed watching the world cup. You "experienced" fans don't need to act all pissy that us Americans are now watching your past time, quit being immature fanboys and be glad we're finally getting in on the most popular sport on the planet. It's strange, the World Cup is supposed to be a global unity event, instead it's turned into one big fuck-America fest; even the refs are getting in on it.
Forget this. How about North Korea losing 7-0?

That team is going to be killed for disgracing the great country of North Korea
FYI, in Spanish, 'foot' does not become 'fút'. Foot in Spanish is "Pie" (pronounced like pee-ay). I can't speak for Norwegian, French, or German translations, but I suspect it's similar. The phrase 'Football' isn't some pure translation across languages. It looks like other languages simply picked up the term 'Football' and put their own pronunciation into it's spelling in each of their respective languages.
The US (and Canada, and Australia. . .) simply call it Soccer. That's not something to get angryabout. Boo hoo, other countries half way around the world refer to something with a different phrase. Grow up. :colbert:
Fussball in German actually directly translates to football.

Hey Jethro, last time I checked, no one cared about your opinion on this forum! Looks like things haven't changed.
American's call football soccer because they stupidly called handegg football instead and when they came to naming this sport with balls and feet, and kicking the balls with the feet they were like "uhh shit"
and what if the room with the toilet in does not infact have a bath, you still say bathroom but this is incorrect. going to the toilet(room, if you really want to say that) would be more correct, which is what the majority of english people say.
it doesn't matter if I know what they mean or are saying, it doesn't make it any less wrong. If every single country and language in the world call it one thing and you call it another AS IT'S ONLY NAME, you are wrong.
In my opinion, our football is better than soccer. I see more strategy and constant excitement. Soccer is fucking boring. COOL I JUST WASTED AN HOUR WATCHING A 0-0 GAME!

In all honesty, I'd rather watch a full, uninterrupted 0-0 soccer match than a game of American Football with its commercial breaks every seven seconds.
I like the soccer commentators, because they're from around the world. Football commentators are all the same Hank Hills

Basketball beats all because you get to watch em runnin around back and forth like Soccer BUT the score ends up being like 92-88 instead of 2-1

I would watch ANY sport to hear Hank Hill comment.
plus it wasn't as stunning as North Korea's football game where they won by a margin of untold victory led by the great leader himself.
So USs next match is Ghana then Korea/Uruguay whereas England get Germany then Argentia.
Fuuuuuu.

Haha, hadn't noticed that.
Jesus America has the "easy" teams and England will fuck up against Argentina again.
Boooo.
I thought we're supposed to be the best, but I guess jolly old England ain't so good at the sport it's famous for.

Nah, it's good just an off year. look, Italy and France are eliminated already. It's an odd world cup year

What i find funny about that is that Britain incorporates both Scotland and Wales.
1-1 victory
1-0 stunning victory
Aww, we have to play Ghana. I wanted a US-Germany match.
Who the hell cares, it's a sport with 2 names. The name doesn't matter, the sport does.
This would be news if anybody in America cared about soccer.
What if America actually won?
Half the people in the U.S. wouldn't even know, and out of those who did, few would care enough to celebrate.
