Call of Duty “has almost ruined a generation of shooter players,” says Tripwire Interactive
So what's new? It's not like people suddenly have changed to stop insulting each other over their perceived skills.
On Wilhelm Steinitz, first World Chess Championship winner.
Although Steinitz became "world number one" by winning in the all-out attacking style that was common in the 1860s, he unveiled in 1873 a new positional style of play and demonstrated that it was superior to the previous style. His new style was controversial and some even branded it as "cowardly", but many of Steinitz's games showed that it could also set up attacks as ferocious as those of the old school.
noob faggot and his cowardly positional play.
Especially when it was the trainwreck of a launch RO2 was.
I was in the closed beta for RO2 as press, and it was the weirdest thing because it was less buggy before it was released. I dunno what happened.

cod is bad but ro isnt much better
(Also, please, someone, make a game like UT2004 please...)
Even in this day and age it's still hard for me to actually find flaws in UT2004, it's so much fun and has a great community (and amazing mods), and I'm usually the one who tells everyone to take off their nostalgia goggles and saying things like Ocarina of Time isn't the best game ever, Half-Life doesn't hold up anymore, etc. But I still love it to death and find it hard to find actual flaws.
i admit it: cod is fun when you want to mess around, maybe with a bunch of friends of yours, and you don't want to "overthink" too much.
i truly enjoy playing the zombie co-op with my peeps.

It's easy and fun to play when you're really tired.
Then I don't see why CoD is getting all this shit for being too easy. It's a fucking casual game and they even advertise it as one.
They do? 4 was hard for me near the end.
CoD's movement mechanics are about as accessible as quake's or doom's or half life's or unreal tournament's so uh???
Not quite. Doom allows MUCH faster speeds than CoD, allowing you to pull off insane maneuvers. Plus, you have SR50 in Doom, allowing players to run 1.5 times as fast - something you'll see quite often in competition.
Though acceleration is essentially the same.
Call of Duty is closer to Delta Force in movement. The first Delta Force. From 1998. 0 to full speed instantly. Red Orchestra is not and will not do that, and the casual CoD type testers of the game complained about it because it wasn't instant. Not even trained sprinters from the olympics can do it. Their feedback wasn't about the game's issues, it was about their own issues with the game and it not being like game X. Well it isn't game X
the main thing that makes people want CoD is the sales numbers. People are completely ignorant to the quality of the game, and they just think, "Hey, this game sold more than any other video game or movie, why wouldn't I buy this?" Then, after they play it, they're in denial that it sucks, "No, this game can't be bad. it has so many sales!" It really makes my blood boil. I'll be honest, I play CoD sometimes, but mainly because it's the only game I can play with all of my friends.

actually there is quite a lot of inertia in doom
Maybe he shouldn't try to cater to CoD players if his game is, at the core, way too clunky and slow paced to be enjoyable by Call of Duty players
I think even ardent haters of CoD could atleast admit that the movement and shooting feels responsive, which further shows just how out of touch the Tripwire dude is.
It's awful. It feels like you are running around a warzone on PCP and killing everybody you see, while forgetting about all of your non mortal or crippling wounds moments after being hit. People change direction instantly - from sprinting one way to the other, and spin in place firing wildly after diving off of balconies. It's boring to watch, and terribly difficult to get into because at no point does it feel like I am playing against people - Because of the Kill/death ratio and quick gratification driven gameplay, players act more like someone on amphetamines playing whack-a-mole than a person fighting to survive and look more like AI that's been programmed to use every exploit they know repeatedly, like a rat pressing a button in hope of food.
After everyone knows the 'tricks', I've never heard my friends make another discovery in the game. Rarely is new strategy developed, and everybody just yells about their gratification trip.
Hell, it looks more like a psychotic hallucination or a dream than anything resembling combat.
He's talking about a generation of players who have played nothing but specifically marketed CoD style games, and as such they dislike a game that doesn't match up with it.
Let's face it, everybody bitches about the CoD gamers invading their multiplayer games, and it's reflected in a lot of objective based games where nobody actually goes for the objective, instead just playing TDM regardless of mode.
And MOBA's, the amount of kids or 'adults' that flame / rage at you for 'kill stealing xD' makes me mad, why are kills even important? as long as we fucking win the game I don't care.
My last game of LoL I had something like 5 kills, 5 deaths and 26 assists as Ashé.. I couldn't give a fuck what people think, we won the game, that's all that matters.
I will always love Red Orchestra.
I will always love Red Orchestra.
I love RO and Killing Floor. I even gave RO2 a fair shot, considering I had pre-ordered it as soon as I could on faith that it would be as good as their previous titles, even though it turned out to be a complete mess at launch and only a half-mess months after release.
But I also enjoy CoD. And it's a shame to see the president of one company I like sling mud at an entirely unrelated series because it's an easy target to curry favor with his demographic of the "hardcore independent PC gamer".
True. And it's arguably probably the easiest too.
Although I think it's interesting how players also take the objective seriously when you fuck it up. Not so much the case in CoD, where no one will breathe down your neck if you don't defuse the bomb in time.
But your ears get exploded if you bodyshot with a sniper rifle.
What did CoD do that counterstrike didn't?
RO2 development is really a mess though, as is the state of TWIL at the moment, with all the engine exploits and crap.
Too bad RO2 is buggy as hell.
anyone who disagrees with this hasn't played the game much

Shooting through walls. That saved me from being shot down a few times.
Shooting through walls. That saved me from being shot down a few times.
hahahhaha
what?
are you actually serious?
What did CoD do that counterstrike didn't?
Killstreaks. No recoil. Ironsights.
Killstreaks. No recoil. Ironsights.
cod1/cod2 actually had decent recoil and no killstreaks, and were pretty good competitive games
I wouldn't say Duty's movement/shooting style ruined things, but I would say that its linearity did. That's actually what differentiates Quake and Doom from Duty in my opinion.
Shooting through walls. That saved me from being shot down a few times.
iirc you could shoot through walls in CS 1.5
don't know if it was a glitch or something but I do recall people shooting through walls in dust2
