Can't weight till Raytheon makes those exoskeletons for people, their goal is to make them able to lift 1,000 pounds in each arm, run faster than anyone, and jump ridiculous heights. http://www.raytheon.com/newsroom/technology/rtn08_exoskeleton/ this is the 2010 one, who knows where it will be in a decade.
One step closer to intelligent robot dinosaur love partners.
It's sad to think they'll find a way to use the tech for killing machines rather than cool stuff :(

DARPA why are you so awesome?

First thing that came to mind, goddamn Mega Man.
Give it Ted Bundy's soul. What could possibly go wrong?
Meh, too tame. Heinrich Himmler's soul.
Now to clone little bearded people who have a keen interest in engineering to make the plan complete.
If you think that I'm one of these 'let's nuke it" persons, then you're wrong. Let me explain: EMP bomb =/= Nuke, Though powerful EMP is a side effect of nuclear fission process. If you think that EMP is some big-ass bomb that is only available to high-ranked military personnel, then you should read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emp_bomb#Non-nuclear_electromagnetic_pulse. In fact, with enough materials and skill, you can construct primitive ones in your garage. And they WILL BE powerful enough to fuck some shit up. When did I say that they will use AI? It is just another drone, means someone somewhere controls it. EMP will fuck up circuitry unless it is shielded. There's no actual difference between battle AI(which exists but will not be used anytime soon) and human contolling drone in case of EMP attack.
A nuke can very well be an EMP. HEMP.
Nothing a RPG-7 can't solve.
1 RPG cant handle hordes of robo-ostriches running at you. Swarm attack!
MGS4 Gekko [img_thumb]http://th08.deviantart.net/fs70/PRE/i/2010/191/9/b/MGS4__Gekko_walks_by_keshon83.jpg[/img_thumb]
That is a really ugly design. It's like a mech is wearing stockings. Just imagining it in sexy poses makes me grossed out.
Don't get your hopes up guys, a fast-running ostrich that can't strafe would make a terrible combatant. However, it would perform amazingly in a support role. I can see it now: There's a bunch of soldiers desperately holding a small fort deep in enemy territory. They are low on ammunition and have wounded that need to be evacuated, but command can't risk having a helicopter shot down. So instead, they send the ostriches. Their great speed allows them to arrive in under an hour, and their small mass lets them avoid enemy fire and mines, unlike a larger vehicle like a humvee. Once they unload the ammo, the soldiers load their wounded onto specialized gurneys on the robot's backs and send them running back to base.
A nuke can very well be an EMP. HEMP.
And who would waste a nuke over robot ostriches? But also I love DARPA it's just like what the 1900's predicted.

Their payload would be severely limited, they would be easily dispatched by, say, an air-burst artillery round (which fucks up anything without some kind of armor anyhow) and I doubt they could carry a wounded infantryman on their back. If they're cheap enough, they'd be much better in a scout role. Think Imperial probe droid from Star Wars, because you could just release about twenty of them to zip around. Since their head is basically all sorts of cameras, they could approach from behind cover/tall grass/piles of dead bodies and observe targets. Perhaps they could even be used as forward observers and paint targets so the USAF can ram a big red, white and blue dick up some poor listening post's ass. Or something like that. [editline]Oh and[/editline]
And who would waste a nuke over robot ostriches? It's not the ostrich they're after, it's your whole infrastructure, army and equipment roster.
P-body soon.
Nothing a RPG-7 can't solve.
And then they build it to launch counter-measures that shoot down rockets.
Team this thing up with Boston Dynamics' Big Dog and you'd be on your way to having a robo-recon killing squad thing. Point is we're totally treading into sci-fi type stuff with this.

I do agree that having them carry wounded is a bit of a stretch, but I still say that giving them boxes of ammo and MREs is a lot more practical than rocket pods and machine guns like some commenters have been suggesting. However, regarding your scout idea; these things seem to be built for sheer forward speed, not maneuverability (strafing, crouching, moving silently, etc.). They might make good terrain scouts (although UAVS would be much better), but you need maneuverability to be a spy and sneak around in close proximity to enemies.
Simple concrete barriers will stop these. Also steel cable restrained between some poles on ~1 meter height will ensue a great faceplant.
Yeah you just wait till these fuckers can jump.
Less effective than a human, but as a way to avoid casualties it would be great. Then there's the fear factor of having a robotic ostrich running full speed at you
If they can make robots like these dirt cheap and expendable as hell then we can send them by the hundreds through minefields and since they're machines we can use satellite and GPS to make sure they cover every inch of an area, so disposing of landmines could be cheap and easy to do this of course you'd use as cheap materials as possible (since you don't need heavy armor plating if it's just going to go destroy landmines)
