The result is amusingly described in the following apocryphal anecdote. Upon the meeting with Muslim Bulgarians of the Volga, Vladimir found their religion unsuitable due to its requirement to circumcise and taboos against alcoholic beverages and pork; supposedly, Vladimir said on that occasion: "Drinking is the joy of the Rus', we can't go without it."

Didn't russia basically choose christianity over islam because of islam's prohibition of alcohol? :v:
There's actually large segments in russia which are islamic.
Islam forbids alcohol, and Catholicism has more weird hangups about sex. So maybe slightly cooler than them? I dunno.
I dunno, the whole circumcision lark is a pretty big negative to me.
iirc when the Vikings officially adopted Christianity it took around 200 years for any of the Norse to even start practising it, and even then most never went to church or adhered to any of its rules. To this day its a similar situation in Iceland.
Christianity wasn't exactly forced in Scandinavia though. It was mostly lone missionaries and monks (and occasionally getting chopped up) until the high middle ages, when the Teutonic and Livonian orders came around to do it by the sword (and by that point, the Nordic religion was dead anyways).
I think a major factor for the people of Denmark converting was their king Harald Bluetooth converting to Christianity. If your king converts basically your entire kingdom does the same. I believe he did it for political reasons or to avoid war as its difficult to remove a deeply entrenched religion.
Between this and that muscley guy who carried the 650kg 10m log 5 "steps", I'm already convinced the age of vikings is upon us once again [editline]4th February 2015[/editline] Also my sister goes to iceland for vacation in a few days
Just as well as judo religions are barbaric.
Iunno, the Vikings seemed capable of extreme acts of brutality and physical violence.
This is cool and all, but I never really understood the obsession behind Vikings, they were incredibly detrimental to the western world if you know your history.
I dunno, the whole circumcision lark is a pretty big negative to me.
Think of it this way: Judaism is such a hardcore religion that you have to mutilate your own dick to join.
This is cool and all, but I never really understood the obsession behind Vikings, they were incredibly detrimental to the western world if you know your history.
Yea, but they looked really badass while being incredibly detrimental to the western world. People aren't very good at reading into history for the most part.
This is cool and all, but I never really understood the obsession behind Vikings, they were incredibly detrimental to the western world if you know your history.
It's because we are only romanticizing and exaggerating about the "good" things the vikings did, without consideration of none of the awful shit they've done - I'm talking about the raping and pillaging, among other things. The same thing can be said about the mongols... most people think they were the coolest archers and horsemen ever, and their genius strategies and power in the battlefield was unmatched and ahead of their time, but that's half of it; Read up on Genghis Khan's rise to power and further expansion of his empire (or better, I highly suggest Dan Carlin's "Wrath of the Khans" podcasts). On the one hand, Genghis Khan exempted the poor from taxes, encouraged literacy, established free religion, and despite his brutal reputation, he was more of a progressive politician, rather than a conqueror. But they were evil incarnate, they really, *truly* were savages. Some of the villages they used to burn to the ground, had so many corpses lying around and piled up, that the stench was downright toxic and you could die from it, and the ground usually ended up being a muddy/bloody mess. Many young girls and women, upon hearing of the mongols coming to raid their village and rape them, would rather commit suicide instead of being ravaged by them. If 1 man, just *one*, refused to join their army, they would murder them all. Read about the siege of Baghdad... they completely, absolutely obliterated that city, to the point that even today, the middle East couldn't really recover. At some point, they ravaged the east of Europe so damn hard, that the sister of a killed king wrote a letter to the Vatican, begging for reinforcements... and a group of Muslim messengers travelled as far as Great Britain -while in the middle of the fucking crusades, keep that in mind- to actually WARN them about the mongols, that they were unstoppable, and would definitely get there. They were masters at psychological terror, to the point some villages would straight up surrender to them, just to minimize the number of casualties. Eurasia in the 1200s was literally the worst place to live, it was hell on earth, thanks to the mongols. Dan Carlin's podcasts explain all this in great depth, and it gives you a good idea of just how vicious the mongols were. What I'm trying to say is that, we could focus on the romantic idea of the Vikings, or the Mongols, mainly because it wasn't as recent as WWII (where romanticizing or talking about the good things the Nazis did is taboo), so we end up having a completely different idea of what they really were, and what they stood for... whereas WWII is still pretty fresh in our collective memories.
And you guys posting all these viking themed metal songs forget about the dudes that did it first and best:
Once you go Bathory you never go back.
Moving to Iceland. Seriously Norse mythology is hella fun, and I like that people don't really believe it necessarily, they just enjoy the stories. That is the kind of religion I can get behind.
I do Viking reenactment, joined in heathen rituals, might go to The Thing in Belgium, and I don't believe in the gods at all. It's just a lot of fun and, honestly, very therapeutic
Once you go Bathory you never go back. I listen to the Hammerheart album daily.
*Sees avatar* Lemme guess... you're an Absurd fan, yes?
Yes please. I'd like a major religion that doesn't have a stick up it's ass about fun stuff like drinking or sex.
i dont know man I think atheism is pretty swell
Christianity wasn't exactly forced in Scandinavia though. [editline]de fourt o febuarary roundabout fie fody in de evenin[/editline] Well that's embarrassing. Meant Olaf Tryggvason.
Once you go Bathory you never go back. I listen to the Hammerheart album daily.
I can confirm personally.
Sounds like someone hasn't heard of Harald Fairhair and every other Christian viking who forcibly converted others.
Harald Fairhair was a pagan who died several decades before the country was even converted. A lot of it was mostly done by missionaries, or by political intrigue. While there was an aspect of violence involved, to say that force was the whole impetus is untrue, considering that by the time the first Danish, Norwegian, or Swedish kings had converted there were increasing numbers of Christians (many enslaved) slowly trickling through into their countries. The Church itself was too weak and disorganized to really get people to convert by the sword up until you hit the 1100s.
Did they all start watching Stargate?
Of course, Stargate came before the Vikings.......
