In the same way shows with gay people in it might "turn kids gay", yeah.
That's different though. Did you even watch the video? The guy literally says he represses his urges and sells it as if it was a normal and healthy thing. It's pretty damn clear that sets an example
And he's happy that way. If everyone involved is happy with it, including him, and it's not hurting anyone, why should anyone care?
Because the tv show casts homosexuality in a negative light and pushes the 'ex-gay' movement. It states that homosexuality is something that need to be cured, and is obviously an antagonistic response to the gay rights movement by the Mormon Church and TLC. [editline]10th January 2015[/editline]
In the same way shows with gay people in it might "turn kids gay", yeah.
No because one is an ideology and the other is a sexual orientation.
And he's happy that way. If everyone involved is happy with it, including him, and it's not hurting anyone, why should anyone care?
Because it's not just their private life, it's a show about it that's going to be viewed by millions of people, many of them who might not be aware that supressing your urges and living a lifestyle where your one and only sexual parter is someone you're not attracted to is a bad thing?
Because you are forcing yourself to believe a delusion, and thus it is detrimental to yourself. There isn't anything admirable about someone forcing themselves to believe they're something when they are not, especially when it within a context like this and it is broadcasted on a TV channel. Not only is it detrimental to yourself, but to LGBT people everywhere.
He openly admitted that he is attracted to men though, he's not pretending that he isn't, what he's doing is controlling the urge to do something he knows is wrong.

I think it has to do with how close this rhetoric is to what the average hard right-winger would say about Trans* or homosexual people.
something he knows is wrong.
What are you implying?
He openly admitted that he is attracted to men though, he's not pretending that he isn't, what he's doing is controlling the urge to do something he knows is wrong.
And the fact that he thinks it's wrong is exactly the part that's bad about it. He didn't choose to do it on his own accord, with no outside influences, he did it because his religion says it's wrong to live a gay lifestyle. And if you actually watch the video he literally says "I don't consider myself gay"
I wonder what this thread would rank on the Danger Scale.

The reason why it seems so similar is because the "right-wingers" you mention use that same mentality to justify oppression of LGBT folk I.E. you are, biologically, male so you cannot identify yourself as a woman. Where the logic ends is you CAN be a biological male and identify as a woman.

I thought it wasn't going to air until sunday. How could you know what the show is going to be about unless you've seen it already???? Trust me, I know. That's what imaginations are for after all.
Is there any clear cut evidence this guy is just going to preach about how great it is to suppress urges? For all we know he probably just wants to show that although he made a strange decision, he wants to be seen as normal. He's got nothing to be ashamed of in that case. And shame on anyone who believes his decision to live the life he is deciding for himself is harmful, he states he has a strong connection with his wife and never says he is forcing himself to do this because of what he was taught. He just made an odd decision to restrict himself to the un-preferred sex, and if he's happy with it then it's not really problematic. Either way this show sounds boring to me. But I just hate reality shows in general.

And if you actually watch the video he literally says "I don't consider myself gay"
Many of our choices are influenced by external events, just because this particular influence happened to come from a religious perspective doesn't mean it's bad. Also from a Western religious perspective you might as well not be gay if you refrain from acting on your desires, it's not like he's pretending to not have those very desires (which I agree would be a bad thing).
But your logic ends because someone can have a kink that their wife or husband can't fulfill, but still be happily married. Trust me, I know. While the latter may be true, to conform to that thought would be detrimental to yourself.
Because the show stars mormon men who closet themselves because they believe that a healthy family can only be founded on a relationship between a man and a woman?
Their family looks pretty healthy to me though.
That's the point, he isn't encouraging supressing your urges by preaching about it, he's encouraging it by making it seem normal and healthy
So by living it he's encouraging it? If a gay couple made a show about themselves I wouldn't see them as encouraging people to be gay, rather that they are just like everyone else. Unless he starts talking about how he's evidence gayness needs to stop, I see nothing wrong with him having a show about his life. Nothing is wrong with him for his choices.
That's the point, he isn't encouraging supressing your urges by preaching about it, he's encouraging it by making it seem normal and healthy
He seems pretty normal and healthy though.
Because the show stars mormon men who closet themselves because they believe that a healthy family can only be founded on a relationship between a man and a woman?
Or maybe it stars a gay man who WANTED to marry a woman and have biological kids so he could have a family like he grew up in?
Because "golddiggers" don't represent a very small part of the population that has a history of prejudice and neglect against it that continues to this day?
While it may be true, it doesn't justify the hypocracy....
Being gay isn't a kink. That would imply that being gay is unusual or perceived as unusual. While the latter may be true, to conform to that thought would be detrimental to yourself.
The wrong word was used I apologize. I happen to be in a grey area, as many other people are, when it comes to sexuality. I married a woman because I love her, I chose her because of her personality and compassion. However I am physically attracted to body parts she doesn't have, I don't consider myself gay, I don't even consider myself bi, but I'm sure some people would. Maybe that's why you guys getting so offended over this, is in turn offending me. His sexuality obviously isn't as clear cut as being straight or gay, and him living his life the way he wants to isn't an agenda he is trying to push, he's just following his own path to happiness. The show however may very well try to push an agenda, but like I said, I think it's a little to early to judge.

Secondly, no, it's not even his life choices that are the issue here, it's that the show is based around the idea that closeting yourself is okay; It's not, and before you say that it's not promoting closeting yourself, note that the name of the show is clearly 'My Husbands Not Gay.' Thirdly, for the love of christ stop ending your posts in ellipses ('...'). It's really pedantic and hurts your argument. If you are a guy and you like men there's a pretty decent chance that you aren't straight.
Why is everyone saying this is promoting suppressing gays? It's just a story where someone became happy with marrying a woman with just a romantic connection. I don't see anything wrong with that.
Okay, so, first of all gold digging is wrong too. As long as both parties are of age, consenting, and informed I don't have a problem with gold digging either. The name of that stupid crabbing show is "Deadliest Catch" and I haven't heard AIDS mentioned once in the entire broadcast. If all titles were 100% related to their content than Whale Wars would be a much more entertaining show.
So by living it he's encouraging it? And no, it's not the same as the "seeing gay people encourages you to be gay" argument, why do people keep saying this? One of those things is natural (homosexuality), the other isn't (supressing you own sexual urges) [editline]11th January 2015[/editline]
While it may be true, it doesn't justify the hypocracy....
There is no hypocrisy here though?
