That article gives her so much credit for things she's never done?
Usually the only time a company slags off a leaving CEO is if they're convicted of a crime.
I have a feeling this will be used as propaganda towards more feminist stuff
By idiots, sure. But idiots are idiots anyway.
Are you serious?
Man I want to be a CEO, all I got to do is release a few statements and talk to a few people every once in awhile while getting the most pay in the entire company? What deal!!
YEUP
TOTALLY
You realize that a CEO doesn't actually control the company, right? Their job is to make decisions that maximize the company's profitability but ultimately they work for the board of directors.

Hey! Don't talk to somebody like that! He knows business! He told us so!
I am sure Reddit is saved now, and the chief issue spanning several years had everything to do with the two short months of Ellen Pao's tenure.
Honestly? It did. All the issues that spanned the several years came to a head because she tried to force it in ways that made all those issues take the immediate forefront.
So what does this actual mean for Reddit? I honestly don't know what the whole problem is with the upper management.
You realize that a CEO doesn't actually control the company, right? Their job is to make decisions that maximize the company's profitability but ultimately they work for the board of directors.
That's still a shitload more than just a PR person as they're claiming.
High-order structuring is not a 9-5 job.

how exactly
asking as a feminist here
Like it or not, no, CEOs don't actually do anything but PR, they're a marketing tool for when things go well, and a scapegoat for when they go bad. As much as I hate to admit it that's probably right. The decisionmaking is probably left to some kind of board of directors and their advisors (of which Pao belongs to now), who respond to investor interest. The family-friendly concept & shadowbans, plus the rumored TV ads and paid AMAs if they're true, were most likely a result of that campaign to bring in advertisers. If the investors and board team are still the same, then we're still going to see the same stuff happen - just WAY more 'secretive' so the community doesn't find out and riot again.
You realize that a CEO doesn't actually control the company, right? Their job is to make decisions that maximize the company's profitability but ultimately they work for the board of directors.
Of course they do, they do a lot of things. But they certainty aren't just there for PR.

No. Stop. You're making the business side of me cry.
CEOs have a lot of power but answer to the board of trustees who entrust that the CEO and their policies will make money for investors.
CEOs have A LOT of power.
So what does this actual mean for Reddit? I honestly don't know what the whole problem is with the upper management.
It means that her poorly thought out decisions won't continue, and we get somebody back that atleast understands Reddit as a community.
how exactly
asking as a feminist here
"Evil, sexist redditors remove female CEO just because she was trying to stop sexism on reddit!" or something along those lines. Nobody is seriously going to say that though. I hope.
[editline]a[/editline]
Her apology is a bit insulting.
Eh, I have a feeling that Pao was just a scapegoat anyway-- I wouldn't be surprised if the same issues persisted over the next few months.
We'll see how this new guy does.
guys this is the ceo that literally did not know she couldn't link a message in her private inbox to other people on her own fucking website
are we really having this argument? holy shit

They have a lot of power but the amount of users being shadowbanned is such a trivial thing and so far below the job of a CEO that it's hilarious to think she had anything to do with it.

The comporate branch and reddit are almost entirely seperate entities.

Speaking as the CEO of a company mmmmgofuckyourself
To make a metaphor, a CEO is like the captain of a ship. You've got all the crew members managing individual parts, like the rigging, or the sails, or the bilge, the supplies, all that. But the captain is the one who actually points the ship in the right direction.
And they've got other responsibilities, too. Like management, morale, negotiation...
Companies don't run without someone at the helm.
Not every company has a board of directors, nor is every company public.
Speaking as the CEO of a company mmmmgofuckyourself
Excuse me but SH is a forum for complex and articulate discussion. Facepunch cannot abide this sort of behaviour and I'd ask you to respect his view and not use vile 4chan behaviour.
What 'cheif issue' was that, exactly?
The lack of mod-to-admin communication. In shutting down the subreddits, the mods protested that for years Reddit administration vowed to open a clear channel of communication between the two. This was an issue that has long predated Ellen Pao's appointment as interim CEO.

If a CEO is just PR then her leaving make perfect sense, because she was a nightmare for PR before she even set foot insinde Reddit HQ.
And things have only gotten worse since.

This is so wrong it's kind of painful to read.
Not every company has a board of directors, nor is every company public.
Yeah, but Reddit does. http://www.bloomberg.com/research/stocks/private/board.asp?privcapId=29927936
This is Pao's 'explanation' btw.
"So why am I leaving? Ultimately, the board asked me to demonstrate higher user growth in the next six months than I believe I can deliver while maintaining reddit’s core principles."
:v:

Absolutely, but nobody is expecting that to be fixed. That's not what people who wanted Pao gone were hoping to achieve. Reddit, with all it's flaws, was still a thriving community. Her resignation will, atleast, convince more serious mods and community members to come back (in theory).
Yeah, but Reddit does. http://www.bloomberg.com/research/stocks/private/board.asp?privcapId=29927936

Yes, reddit does. That doesn't allow someone to say "CEOs answer to a board of directors and are just PR."

That's actually like totally not true since a CEO is in charge of short term plans business planning and direction.
Investors then have final say in long term stuff of course, but CEOs and boards are vital month to month functioning of larger companies.
