72% of parents think a video game ban would be good

Is it or me is almost everyone in this thread, including the OP, as incompetent as they seem to be? If you took the time to actually, god forbid, read past the title and read the actual source, you would've seen that the article states they want a ban on the sale of violent videogames to MINORS, kids who are buying games they're too young for, which is actually a good thing. This isn't some stupid 'ZOMG VIOLENT VIDYA GAEMS R BAD!' bullshit, this is about selling games to people who shouldn't be allowed to have them in the first place!

Parents should be mad at those individual retailers who sold the game then.
Thats like getting mad at the porn industry because someones kid bought a porno mag from a careless storeowner
Note: actually surprised parents arent bashing the retailers
If the parents weren't such fucking morons and actually looked at what their kids bought, they wouldn't have need to get mad.
It's so ridiculous that parents go out and buy some X-Rated game like "Pimps and Hoes and Gang Violence and Drug Cartelling", then let their 5 year olds play it, then suddenly get mad like "What the- how was I supposed to know this game had bad content??!?! It's the ESRB/game industry's fault!!!1111oneoneQQ!!!"
I go by 2 simple rules as far as children and games are concerned.
Obey the certificates.
Make them understand whay's right and wrong.
Of course that reading a book is better, don't play for too long etc.
Also about ERSB. I agree that it is a weak certicicate which is why I quite like the BBFC ones. In the UK they're enforced just as well as films as they're exactly the same.
I dont see a problem with children playing videogames, its stimulating, usually improves your English, promotes logical thinking
and is entertaining. Games in general can be an amazing experience that i would never rob my children of, i would even go as
far as saying videogames is an artform.
Britannica Online defines art as "the use of skill and imagination in the creation of aesthetic objects, environments
or experiences that can be shared with others." I see no reason why this wouldn't apply to games.
I bought The Saboteur a few days ago. I'm 14 and I look like 11. It has a shitton of "bad" stuff in it. Russia is a great place.

Oh, and it helped my English too. Just 4 years ago I was your average "xd i lov css OH U KILED ME FAGFAG", and look at me now.

I have to agree with this. It's usually the parents fault if they are surprised to see a game is loaded with mature content. It even says on the back what's in the game.
I support it too. Count me into the 72%
Our argument as gamers is "It's the parents' responsibility!"
So require the parents to come in, and warn them that the game they're buying for their kid contains graphic violence, language, and sexual themes. Problem solved.
Ban those parents, it's their fault, not video games

It says on the back of the fucking case what the game has in it.

It doesn't hurt to repeat it verbally, just in case they haven't read it.
i learn enlish from crash bandicot 3.
I learnt to use my head by going to gamefaqs because of half life
Hey ch'all. Check it.

Not relevant. Thread has a bad headline, but RTFA. This is about parental permission to buy violent games.
I'm glad to see the crotchety old conservative demographic is still holding ground on anything them damn kids are playing. Coincidentally most of those 72% agreed that the neighborhood kids should need to get off of their lawns.
i think these parents have a lack of information, and when they are confronted with this one-sided question, it's difficult to say no.
would support a law that 'prohibits minors from purchasing ultra-violent or sexually violent video games without parental consent.'
It's no different from requiring parental consent for rated-R movies.
It makes perfect sense & I'd like to hear some reasons against it, please.
Its cartoon network and disney and all other idiotic cartoon channels where creatures on screen act like idiots and children learn from that.
I have a 9 year old brother, he watched those channels all day long during the summer, sometimes with his friends and acts dumb and growls like a beast when he doesent like something etc.
You are now realizing that your life would be better off if you never touched a video game in your life.
Probably would have although it's not the video games themselves. It's all about the parents, you can't just ban everything cause you don't want your children to do it.
What a stupidly mislabeled thread, nice job.
The real thing is that 72% of adults believe that minors should be required to get parental consent to buy M games. God damn stop taking things out of proportion. Most stores already require you to be 17 or older.
Um.. I don't play GTA to kill innocent people so relieve stress.
Does that mean I'm going to be a serial killer in real life?
72% of US* parents think a video game ban would be good.
Damn I love Europe.

We are not incompetent. Lets look at what a minor is:
Anyone under 18 in some places;
Anyone under 21 in some places.
For real. There is a real problem if people 16 and up are grouped with 5 year olds. There is a big difference, mental growth is not linear. One is deemed mature enough to drive, but NOT TO PLAY A FAKE GAME. There is not physical danger in sitting down and shooting people on the computer/xbox. But you can drive a freaking car that you can crash and kill a highway full of people?
Surely you must be joking.
And in some states, you can smoke before you play games? W.T.F!?
Anyway, I'm just stating that the government shouldn't have to enforce these things if people deemed 'mature' (ie adults) are too lazy to watch after their kids.
Question for you: If you are old enough to work and make money to fund your game playing habits, don't you think you should be considered mature enough to buy the games? As for the children < working age, how the hell are they getting the games? Probably their parents buying them so they can go do something else and to occupy them. Another case of laziness. They should be instead spending time with their kid.
It doesn't hurt to repeat it verbally, just in case they haven't read it.
And it shouldn't be their responsibility not to be lazies who don't care what's in a game? They need someone at the store to be forced to tell them? What, can't they read?
That's the problem with society today, bunch of lazy people.

Numbers, not soccermom predictions! Thanks :D
Parents should just not buy a game if they think its bad.
my mom bought the Half life 1 platinum pack for me and my brother when i was 7 or 8.
But she only let my brother play it because he was 14 and the game was violent.
Parents need to L2whatmymomdid and stop bitching.
they're their goddamn kids; if they want to ban video games they can. I guess the reason they don't is because deep down they realise it's a fucking joke.
I think we should ban violet videogames, look at me, I played violent videogames and look what happened to my classmates. they're all dead now.
3':
I learnt English thanks to video games.
People need to stop crying over shit.
BOOBS WILL KILL MY CHILDREN
VIDEOGAMES WILL KILL MY CHILDREN
SWEARING WILL KILL MY CHILDREN
Grow the fuck up, honestly.
it's just like rock music and skirts and pants and leaves that cover you pubic area and elvis presley and violent movies
