I actually work at EB Games and yeah those questions (Edge Card, warranty, etc etc) are required to be said, apologies if it makes you angry or anything.
It's already an inconvenience to go out and buy the game, then you have the cashiers playing 20 questions with you. I sympathize with the workers, I know it's company policy but that's one of the many reason people don't like going into your stores. You guys seem pushy as fuck and nobody likes that. You used to be able to get away with it but now there's alternatives? Who's gonna deal with that?
Yeah I don't get how this is a standard according to all the agrees. I've never had that many questions after taking it to the checkout.
every store asks if you got their points card (thats what a edgecard is) and every store that seeks electronics/large products/related always asks about warranties. the people complaining haven't been to a store before much tbh. I did it because i wanted the posters and it took like 4 minutes.
2, not 20, questions that literally any store would ask you. omg boycott :(
Every store is different. I get asked rewards card? Would you like to buy the warranty? Strategy guide? Pre-orders for any upcoming games, it's only $5 down? Also we're taking trade ins for tablets and phones so bring any old devices in for credit or cash. Edit: You reminded me of the survey. Remember, do the survey for a chance to win a hundred dollars. Again, like literally every retail store ever to exist.
They are doing a reward credit card thingy now like your gas station or Best Buy or w/e. Has high interest rates but most store-based credit cards do. I assume it's being pushed like their rewards card.
the gamestop rewards card thing isn't a credit card at all, it's more like how sometimes supermarkets give you that little free card thing that you put on your keychain and when you shop there you scan it to get a small discount except instead of being free it's 15 dollars a year and you get a subscription of gameinformer with it

It's all about numbers and if your store doesn't do well, your store manager doesn't do well and you'll get the boot. Because everyone thinks "oh I want to sell games for a living, that will be fun" they can get rid of you and replace you in ten minutes.

Also what the other guy said, if you have the lowest sales in the store you're going to get fired. Sorry a few questions bug you so much, but working 40 hours asking people like you stupid questions is much easier than 40 hours sweating my ass off in a kitchen.

They don't kick people out because they don't get enough pre-orders or PowerUp cards anymore. A lot of firing decisions are based on the surveys you're told to fill out every time you buy something. Pre-orders and PowerUp cards are nice to have and stores will get bonuses if they get enough or reminders to push for them if they're down, but the employee surveys are the real blood of how they keep and fire people now. GS employees up here get around 8-8.20 iirc
Minimum wage? then you've got a shitty place you're working at. GS employees up here get around 8-8.20 iirc
$8/hr is minimum wage in Colorado. US minimum wage is $7.25/hr. *gun to head*
^ I remember an employee literally refused to checkout my game until I filled out the pro membership form. Every time I tried asking "hey dude can I just get my game and go" he was like "BUT WHY WOULDN'T YOU WANT THESE AMAZING DEALS!?" Took me like fifteen minutes to get it through his thick skull that I had no interest in membership. Christ.
I've had this happen to me a few times. This is how I deal with shit like this. I announce politely, yet firmly that I'm going to buy this at Amazon (or any other competitor, really,) instead, and I walk out of the store.
why does everyone hate gamestop (EBgames in canada) anyway? I use them for 3ds/wiiu games and i've never had an issue, prices are decently competitive too.
GameStop is EB Games, too? I had one of each in the same fucking mall back like 6 or 7 years ago.
GameStop is EB Games, too? I had one of each in the same fucking mall back like 6 or 7 years ago.
They merged back in 2005 and it took them forever to close a lot of the EB Games that were still left over, at least in the US.
People say they get bad value on trade-in, but it really all depends on what you're trading in. Trading in Madden 25? You're gonna get nickels. Call of Duty? Also nickels. Something more obscure, like Jojo's Bizarre Adventure? There's the money. It's an item they don't have an infinite stock of. They'll have maybe 2 and that's it. Like the other day. I went to put down a $10 pre-order on Smash Bros. and I didn't get paid until 2am so I couldn't make it to the midnight release. Then the cashier reminded me that trade-ins exist and he looked up 3 games for me. Jojo, Atelier Escha & Logy, and Tales of Symphonia Chronicles. That was $26. That was half of my remaining price. So I go home, grab those games, and grab a few other odds and ends that were sitting around gathering dust. Go to trade them in and end up with $53. So I paid off Smash, got $3 back, and stayed around for the midnight release. All the while the employees were cool and talkative about new video games, old video games, and everything else. But yeah, I'll welcome a price-drop on PS3s and 360s. That'd be pretty good for anyone who has been holding out on finally buying one until this point.
People I hear complain about Gamestop usually sound like the kind of people who hiss and scowl every time they seen any kind of advertisement.
People I hear complain about Gamestop usually sound like the kind of people who hiss and scowl every time they seen any kind of advertisement.
Like I said, it isn't the fact that they're asking. It's the fact that if they don't ask and succeed, they will lose their jobs so they're extra pushy. Go to Best Buy, "want a BB credit card"? "No thank you" "okay here you go"
the gamestop rewards card thing isn't a credit card at all, it's more like how sometimes supermarkets give you that little free card thing that you put on your keychain and when you shop there you scan it to get a small discount except instead of being free it's 15 dollars a year and you get a subscription of gameinformer with it
They opened up a credit card earlier in the year, though. Like Best Buy's credit card or Target's REDcard it can only be used in-store and it has a high APR. Not a new concept by any means, not sure why people were surprised when it was announced.
Like I said, it isn't the fact that they're asking. It's the fact that if they don't ask and succeed, they will lose their jobs so they're extra pushy.
lol what. i've never had anyone literally try and force me to do anything. they just ask and i say nah.
Then you're lucky and you have a store ran by a decent manager. The majority of stores that I've been to in various states have always been extra pushy and it's due to corporate policy.
why does everyone hate gamestop (EBgames in canada) anyway? I use them for 3ds/wiiu games and i've never had an issue, prices are decently competitive too.
They're known for doing underhanded practices to milk money from customers. For example, the Wii games Xenoblade Chronicles was Gamestop exclusive in NA. Instead of charging $50 for a new copy, they decided to tote it as a hard-to-find game. How did they do that? They opened each copy of Xenoblade Chronicles in order to sell it as a rare used game for $90.
Then you're lucky and you have a store ran by a decent manager. The majority of stores that I've been to in various states have always been extra pushy and it's due to corporate policy.
I know you said I was wrong earlier but I don't know how right you are either. Back in around 2012 GameStop made a huge policy shift on how it treats and measures its employees and they don't do pre-order or PowerUp card pushing anymore. That is a fact. In the five some odd years I've lived in Colorado and been to 10 different GameStop's I've never had anyone be such a pushy asshole about things that I've felt like I've needed to leave.
The employee that gets you to buy more gets bonuses most likely, it's not like this is a GameStop issue, most places are like this.
i work at gamestop, this is not true. its just stuff we have to say [editline]23rd November 2014[/editline] i fuckin hate asking people if they want a warranty on their $30 dollar 3ds game
why does everyone hate gamestop (EBgames in canada) anyway? I use them for 3ds/wiiu games and i've never had an issue, prices are decently competitive too.
Because they overprice like a motherfucker. They charge 80$ here for a new console game while other places (Webhallen, a prime example of a good store) charge about 60$
Clearing up some misconceptions. Any opinions expressed in this post are purely my own and do not reflect the company in any way shape or form. Gamestop employees get paid an hourly wage, plus overtime pay if necessary and maybe holiday bonuses if it's been a good season. There is no commission or bonus handed out based upon the games we sell you. If we suggest a particular product, it's because we are trying to help you get the most for your money, or we just really like the game. For instance, I usually have a wonderful two-way conversation with every 3DS shopper about Ocarina of Time because I think it's fucking awesome. Certain goals are set for a district's store (if not by corporate then rarely by management), pushing sales of particular items, like strategy guides, pro memberships, preorders, DLC/season passes, or the new credit card we've started rolling out. The questions asked at the register are encouraged by management, with the assumption that the employee whose promotions of these extra items result in higher sales is a more valuable asset to the company, and so can be trusted to work a larger percentage of the store's available hours (making more money as a result). If I sound pushy with all these prompts at the register, it's because I want to help my store meet these goals; I benefit directly from my store's success. This is the situation with all retail outlets. Furthermore, many of our customers would not know about these products if we didn't tell them about them. Informed, critical consumers like you find on Facepunch are a surprising minority in our regular clientele. The opposing majority either don't play games much or are buying for others. By providing these solutions we are making sure they are getting the most out of their trip to the store, while also pushing more product off the shelves. You don't have to buy anything we offer you if you don't want it. You can also just tell us to shut up; my manager will understand (dont use that exact phrase though im rlly sensitive). I still haven't quite figured out the formula for trade-in prices, but I know it has a lot to do with how many copies we have in stock, aswell as obvious things like condition and resale probability. Do note, though, the convenience you are getting from being able to buy and sell your specialty products at the same establishment, and factor that in when I give you three dollars for the hundredth copy of Dark Souls that's passed through my hands. Source: I work part-time at the local GS to supplement my independent college life. [editline]asd[/editline] On topic, I think anyone who has seen or played an 8th-gen console game would agree to this price cut. It isn't cost-effective to continue producing games for these consoles anymore. Like it or not, when developers have to make critical cutbacks to get their games to run on older systems, said systems are way past their expiration dates.
gamestop employee here, my writings don't express the opinion of the company etc. there's literally nothing i can do about low valued trade-ins. it's automatic. we're not all assholes. i just do what i'm told. if someone says no, then i move on. argue about the morality of pushing products, but i'd much rather ask a few scripted questions on a daily basis than bust my ass in a kitchen and get told i'm shit at it when i'm sweating. by the way, if you're ever in the area, you should get our brand new power up rewards credit card! if you spend over $250, you get 6 months no interest financing! it's really cool! no? are you sure?
