For those unaware, Texas cities frequently have confusing layouts and unusual streets because of the rapid expansion we've seen recently. This means that guys on the ground are virtually useless in a lot of situations unless the suspect can be surrounded and closed in on from all sides. Police snipers often operate out of helicopters in Texas in order to get a clear shot at a suspect when ground units can't due to a many fences, buildings, etc.

--so to me this is an irrational kneejerk response and will limit the effectiveness of our police forces, especially in some very, very bad areas (parts of Fort Worth are some of the most crime ridden areas in Texas, and often the worst in terms of layout)
Just wait, in a couple of years we'll have Predators owned by the Texas state police shooting Hellfires at vehicles suspected to be carrying illegal "potential terrorists".
Now what are the Texans supposed to do for fun?
Dammit, my state is crazy. Only the weirdest things on the news come from here now.
I would like to see someone try to shoot anything out of any other aerial vehicle. Not exactly practical to try that out of a hot air balloon.
I know of at least 2 times that American Law Enforcement has done that successfully. The one mentioned in the OP, and an incident where an FBI agent fired his M16 at an armed fugitive after said fugitive fired at the FBI Helicopter.
examples of such a situation.
well can you give an example of how lethal force from a helicopter, even if the helicopter is first on scene, would be preferable to waiting for ground officers? the goal of the helicopter is to keep their eyes on the suspect and be able to relay info to the ground. this increases the likelihood of catching a fleeing suspect, for example.
following a violent suspect in a rough area who may be armed precipitates the need to be able to fire out of a helicopter?
it's not really that unusual considering its happened before
granted there a difference between shooting someone in a vehicle who is fleeing and shooting an armed suspect.
What they don't tell you is that shooting people while hanging from a cord attached to the bottom of a helicopter is technically not shooting from it.
I'd be surprised if you could even hit the ground trying that.

you have a point. even i would be hard pressed to say that someone on a helicopter shouldn't fire in the middle of a gunfight or if the helicopter is being shot at. still, for most cases, especially vehicle chases, shooting is unnecessary and actually puts lives at unnecessary risk.
what if you're using this

Blimps with guns!
i think all criminals should be summarily executed on the spot ala judge dredd that would be a good way to fight crime imo
