The proper name is Gojira. Why do western people keep calling him Godzilla? Is the name Gojira so hard to pronounce?

Godzilla is infinitely more sensible in English. It has nothing to do with pronunciation. God Lizard. That's Gojira in a nutshell.

No, its because thats how its been translated to english for the past 60 years.
Zilla was scary as hell. It looks like an evil upgraded counter-part of Godzilla himself.

Except he was shorter, dumber, and couldnt fire lasers out his mouth :v:
Should I make a megathread so people can discuss Godzilla there instead of here.
-Snip late-
I remember watching every Godzilla movie on VHS every roadtrip me and my bro went on. Probably seen every movie 3-5 times
Please don't be god awful like the American one
I'm pretty sure it was confirmed that the godzilla in that movie wasn't actually godzilla but another large creature by the name of 'zilla' or something
I think japan actually made a movie where the real godzilla beat the shit out of that one
It was named Zilla because Zilla had nothing to do with Godzilla, it was mainly just to put the fans at ease, a way of saying that "this isn't canon Godzilla".
Godzilla has fucking beam attacks and does Kung-fu, Zilla was just an oversized T-Rex.
I did like the look of it over the classic bipedal stegosaurus design.
Well, I think what the 1998 movie did so well in their Godzilla design was that (gigantic scale aside), it looked more like a creature that could plausibly exist. It looked strong, it looked intelligent, and it looked agile. Above all that though, it was animated REALLY well and had a great sense of weight and movement.
That is not plausible at all. You need to look up the Square-Cube law (which basically says that as the height of something increases by *height*^2, it's weight increases by *weight*^3). The REAL Godzilla obeys the Square-Cube law, although there is the minor detail that realistically the act of taking one step should shatter his bones to pieces, but Godzilla 2000 explained his invincibility by giving him regeneration powers that would make Wolverine jealous, so that's enough for me.
Anyways, as you can see from my avatar, I am no stranger to Godzilla and his friends/foes. I will always love him, and I hope to god this is a more faithful adaption than the '98 movie (which, while a good monster movie, should never have been called Godzilla). Just remember that this is a proof-of-concept trailer. The movie itself is still in pre-production.
If it turns out shitty, Toho in Japan will make a movie in retaliation to save his name. Look at Godzilla from 1998. Godzilla 2000 was released in Japan no more than a year later.
Am I the only one who thought the 1998 Godzilla was pretty good? Everywhere I look I see people who hate it. I even re-watched it a few weeks ago to see if I wasn't viewing the past through rose colored glasses and I still thought It was good for CGI at the time.
Hell, for fucks sake I remember them interviewing the guys who did the original Godzilla from the 50s about the American one; they said that they would have done it like that if they had the technology at the time(i.e. CGI). So why do so many people hate it so much?
Trailer for "Monsters", in case someone doesn't know what the movie was about.

I watched that movie a while ago.
It was honestly pretty bad. I understand it was independent so they had budget constraints, but NOTHING HAPPENED until, like and hour and a half into the movie. Other than that, you just kinda watched two people dick around in destroyed Mexico for a while.
It had a good premise though, and maybe he will do better with more money. I think it is good that he might try to focus on the humans, because at least the characters in Monsters were actually pretty interesting. The first Godzilla film focused mostly on the humans and it was amazing, so I'm looking forward to it.

IIRC, The guy who directed Godzilla: Final Wars renamed the '98 GINO to 'Zilla because he "took the 'God' out of Godzilla". Godzilla is supposed to be a massive, nigh-invincible force of nature whose purpose is to remind mankind just how insignificant and powerless they really are. 'Zilla was just a typical movie monster who died a typical "Military saves the day!" death.

Because the square cube law doesn't apply to the rubber suit version. At all. Gotta love doublethink. :v:

Bad Acting, terrible plot.

Fun Fact: Gojira, when properly translated, is a combination between "Gorilla" and "Whale"
Now before you ask how Godzilla is a mix between a "Gorilla" and "Whale", it isn't. It was actually the nickname of some really big dude working on the set, and so Producer Tomoyuki Tonaka suggested it for the creatures name.
Ive always imagined that godzilla dined on whales, fish, and concrete.
Oh man I have to watch the original Godzilla tonight, I just got Criterion's recent release of it.

Actually, there never was a big guy working at Toho, and none of the people still alive (like Producer Tanaka's wife) could remember anyone who would fit that description. It's likely that "Gojira" was just the product of a marketing meeting, and the fabled "big guy" was just that, a fable.
Bad Acting, terrible plot.
The plot definitely sucks but I don't think the acting in other Godzilla movies is anything to brag about either.
If this turns out successful and the monster looks great, they should try to remake Rodan/Anguirus/Ghidorah. I'd even love for a remake of King Kong vs. Godzilla to be made for a modern audience.

That's actually pretty interesting...though, I think that Gorilla and Whale could work well. Godzilla is massive, bipedal, and comes from the ocean. Gorilla whale seems apt, for the old depictions.
And sorry if I was unclear, when I meant Gojira in a nutshell, I was referring to the character itself, not the naming convention.

I don't have a problem with the original films, but they just remind me so much of Power Rangers that I can't take them seriously

I dunno I kinda liked it.
I grew up with this:
Godzilla and Godzuki (his son or some shit); and the American version

am I the only one that won't want to see this film if it's like the original godzilla that can do fucking kun fu and shoot lazers? I have a feeling that's it's not going to be like that

Its going to be the original godzilla.

The director said he wanted the movie to be taken seriously (like the very first movie), so no kung-fu or lasers.
