yes we get it fox news is dumb. can we stop beating this horse?
As long as Fox News exists, there is a horse to be beaten.
This isn't Facebooks fault, it's the kids bigoted parents fault.
You have to be a cruel heartless mother fucker to kick your child out just because of something they can't control.
true, but irrelevant. Facebook shouldn't be putting up any potentially offensive advertisements anywhere, and a lot of people are offended by homosexuality.
"son what's santorum"
What's wrong with him.
There are ways, adblock and a custom Hosts file for instance, to keep ads out.
Also, if you are looking at a page with material, such as gay ads or naked chicks or whatever, and you leave it on and walk away then you are the dumbass to blame. This could easily have been a straight guy leaving straight porn on his computer and getting kicked out by his mom because his little sister saw it.
This goes double if you live with people, or in a location, where they are uptight about certain stuff and you know it.
David knew the ads were displayed on his profile, but could do nothing to remove them no matter how hard he tried.
Click the little X in the corner of the ad, hide all from that source.

Then say it's against your views or whatever.

Anyway, his parents got too worked up over nothing. Hell, even if he was gay, that's no reason to kick him out.

Blocking ads with a custom hosts file? I'm intrigued
Good ol Ad Block Plus..

Wouldn't there just be another one from a different source that shows up afterwards?
Phobe = scared of something
Homophobe = scared of gays
Homophobe is a bigoted dumb ignroant word used against people that dont like or are against gay marriage. That doesnt mean they are scared by them.

Could you rephrase this in English? I'm assuming that you're saying "homophobe" isn't a valid word but I can't be sure.
If you are, you're wrong. A phobia is a fear of or a strong aversion to something. Homophobia can be a fear of homosexuals or a strong dislike of homosexuals (or both).
'phobe' does not necessarily mean 'scared'. Hydrophobic substances are not scared of water.
Even if that was true, colloquial definitions can be completely different from technical ones

I'm assuming he means adding a list of ad servers to his hosts file. I don't know if it would work or not
More like how his bigoted moron parents drove him to death
I see the box about targeted advertising on Google, and I know what it is, and I let them do it. Because I don't give a shit.
A more accurate title would be; ignorant homophobic retards with no concept of how targeted advertising works destroy the life of a young man
Why do people blame Facebook for this?
First of all: What the fuck is wrong with his parents?
Second: If he was that sure that no one would approve of him being gay, why did he not click the X on the add, and click uninteresting/sexually explicit/anything.
No more gay ads.
This is why the advertising system on Facebook is a bad thing; this thing ends up happening. The parents are dangerous individuals that require re-education if they are to function in normal society. If the kid ends up dead or in hospital, it is an objective fact that the parents should be blamed as a prominent influence on the tragedy.
Facebook is dumb for displaying potentially problematic ads without giving the option to the user to stop receiving these ads, parents are fucking disgusting for throwing their child out without even talking to him.
Google+ Master Race?
Our apologies to visitors who wanted to read our blog on the London teenager who was evicted from home, but the man's partner has requested that the piece be removed. While anonymity has been fully respected it was agreed that the potential interest in this very sad situation might not be helpful to a resolution of the personal issues involved. We send our best wishes and hopes to the people concerned that a positive way forward can be found.
We will engage Facebook directly on the points of substance relating to behavioural targeting channels and report back on these pages.
Heh, page was taken off

It does. I used that method to block all MSN adverts.
Is this why I have all of these ads for steampunk apparel stores and game development schools?
I thought facebook just had good taste in ads.
I've also gotten some weird ass ads for some kinky bondage stores, apparently facebook thinks I like being tied up and gagged.

We all know you do.
Advertising is already evil to the core in virtue or what it is; the only variable here worth noting is the shitbag parents.
We all know you do.
Shit, you discovered my secrets.
If it hadn't been for Facebook's intrusive information gathering and unauthorized advertising, the kids parent's wouldn't have found out to begin with. So while Facebook may not have grabbed the kid and tossed him out on the streets, their shitty policies caused it and they are just as responsible.
You're willingly giving information to Facebook. Which part of that is intrusive? Also the ads generated are entirely client-sided. It's not like Facebook is putting ads up on his mother's computer (or more specifically her account) saying that David is gay. He should have just logged out of his account (in a perfect world he wouldn't have to).
If one does not want their information farmed by Facebook... then don't use Facebook. It's pretty common sense.
They offer a service (social networking), their payment is the ability to parse information you provide (which consequently allows them to target ads well).
As to why it was placed there - there's a chance the user add profile was built up from his friendships, or other browsing behaviour.
I mean sites have an ability to read a pretty big set of your browsing history.
I mean there's this. http://www.mikeonads.com/2008/07/13/using-your-browser-url-history-estimate-gender/
I am half man, half woman.
I am... MAN WOMAN!
What point? That Facebook uses your information for advertising? You do realize this shit has been happening on the internet for decades, right?

Title is completely misleading, it was his parent's fault not Facebook's
title is for the recognition of facebooks importance here, it was the trigger of all the situation.

Second, you do not actually get the option to disable the ads or prevent it from gathering information. Even when you leave Facebook, it will still continue to gather information about your actions, even if you log out. Third, he would normally log out, but his parents returned home early, meaning he didn't get the chance to.
And you say that last part like we should just accept it or ignore it, which is a horrible and naive manner of thinking. It is not ok by any means and should not be done, and it needs to be changed. They should not be able to collect that information under any circumstances, ever.
Why the fuck would you kick your kid out simply because there are a few discrete gay advertisements on Facebook? This is a clear example of horrible parenting.

no, phobia = irrational fear, thus homophobes are irrational, now the only reason I can see why you would be defending people like that is because you are one, or you just don't like gays, ether way :getout:
