I disagree. I have a friend who does nothing but sit around and eat but he still doesn't gain a lot of weight. Its mixture of genetics and food intake.

i dunno i think metabolism plays a big part in a lot of things like that. obviously at the end of the day it's all down to lifestyle choice but everyone knows that guy or girl who is like 6'2" and eats like a pig all day everyday and somehow manages to remain like 130lbs. some overweight people can have pretty regular diets and still be overweight. i know a girl who is a little overweight, nothing major, but she barely ever eats because her sleeping pattern is so weird - she has like one meal a day - AND she's a vegetarian. some people get dealt a shit hand at both ends of the extreme
I'm only 115 pounds, 5'9"
If you started seeing posters around that showed a super skinny person in one frame, then the same person with a healthy weight in the next, with "WHAT'S YOUR EXCUSE?" on it, I'm guessing you'd be kind of peeved no
You probably feel fairly comfortable with your current weight, or at least comfortable enough that you recognize you're too light and don't need people constantly reminding you of it. Well if someone's fat and ok with it that's their mindset too.

Well that may be the body thinking its being starved and storing shit for long term, which may also be affecting her sleep.

I have a friend named Justin. He's about 5'7-5'8 and about 130-140. He had to GAIN WEIGHT to go into the military, despite the fact that he literally ate junk food all day, every day. I never saw him NOT eating anything whereas i'll go for a couple days not eating things just 'cause i'm not hungry, or alternately eat just like he does and i'm still about 120 pounds heavier than he is.

If you had the most extreme metabolism you're only looking at a difference of a couple of hundred calories at most. The laws of thermodynamics disagree with your anecdotes. I used to think I "ate like a pig" too, and so did other people, until I started counting calories. It turns out I didn't even eat 2000 a day.

Genetics is a poor excuse, in the vast majority of people metabolism has MUCH more to do with habits, levels of activity, mental health, and things like keeping a good circadian rhythm and whatnot. Hell, genetics is a fucking terrible excuse, I'm hypothyroidic AND a type 1 diabetic, I have to take 0.088 mg of synthroid every day because my thyroids are so dysfunctional, yet I am one of the fittest people I know and I have been easily maintaining a 6 pack for nearly a year.

A lot of times, that's true (on the surface). I had an overweight friend and we'd eat what looked to be the same amount of food, and he'd have the same complaint.
What people don't realize when they complain about this is that usually the thin people are eating an entire plate of veggies and chicken or something, and the fat people are eating the same amount of food but it's fries and burgers, etc. That's certainly been true in my experience.

thats not the same amount of food though....
Chicken and vegetables is going to net a lot less calories than burgers and fries.
That argument is never true. Almost invariably obese people severely underestimate how much they eat (hence the recent article about the flawed methodology with a slew of weight loss studies - because self reporting is unreliable and the data doesn't match what people say) and overestimate how much others eat.
I had a friend who was considering steroids because he "can't gain weight". He claimed it was his metabolism and it didnt matter how much he ate. Theres been rare occasions ive spent a whole day with him, for breakfast he has an energy drink, for lunch a sausage roll and then for dinner he'll get a huge serve of junk food. Theres nothing wrong with his metabolism. He displays no symptoms of hyperthyroidism, he just severely overestimates how much he eats.
People's judgement of themselves is almost always off point. Ive seen people logging their food intake but conveniently leaving out stuff like sauces and milk etc - not even stopping to consider those sauce additions could easily net 240 calories on top of what they eat. Everything adds up.
There are a few genetic conditions that makes an unfavorable environment for fat loss - and less than 1% of the population actually has these. To paraphrase a MD who released a public statement on the matter "99% of obesity cases are easily preventable and are not a result of a medical disorder, and place an unnecessary burden on health care".
People will always attempt to rationalize their situation in preference to actually breaking habits, because the latter is harder and less comfortable. I know this, because I've done this myself back when I was a chubby young teen. Rationalizing that other kids just "got lucky" "good genes etc". Reality as I found out my genes were perfectly fine and in fact I was a talented athlete, I was just eating too fucking much.
Freemen Of The Lard.

this pisses me off so much because people actually type and punctuate their text like this on tumblr

I didn't mean for that to come off as a genetics thing, it was mainly about food intake and metabolism. But seriously, good on you mate, fuck using things like that as an excuse.

Look at Asians. Asians in America have higher obesity rates than Asians in Asia.
This is because of the diets.
Genes do matter but diet is basically everything.

You're fucked once you get to your late twenties, though.
I used to be pretty much like you, able to eat anything and not gain a single gram. However, fast metabolism is a youth kind of thing that evens out after you turn twentyfive or so.
Nowadays, I can't even look at a hamburger without gaining weight. It sucks. I was skinny all my life to the point where Skinny even became a nickname. Then suddenly the pounds were flying on and I had to radically change my lifestyle to get back to normal.
