• Russia reveals plans for base on the moon

The Russians deserve their spot on the moon. The Russians were the first to space but they lost to America landing on the moon, this might very well be their chance to land there.
Could this mean the start of a second space race? If so, Fuck yeah. If not, still fuck yeah.
Good luck, America has no Space Program anymore.
I dont get why they havent done this already, after all we do need to start thinking about what kind of tech we will need to be able to set up colonies, as well as improving space travel abilities.
Ha, the whole second world war was only a distraction, our main forces were deployed on the moon! Foolish Russians!
We all know Russia isn't actually going to do any of that shit.
I'll have to agree. Anyone remember the plan George Bush made in 2004 for NASA. Look how that turned out.
for mother russia
Well Obama said we will be going to mars within 30 years, I hope he's right.
Well Obama said we will be going to mars within 30 years, I hope he's right.
That's what we thought 30 years ago.
If it can't be done in the current election cycle, it's doubtful the government will ever do it at all.
Why would you use the moon as a staging ground for a mars mission? It's not even 0.1% closer to it than Earth is.
Race? What do you mean by that? Why do we have to race each other any way, especially in awesome shit like this space exploring. It's not like we can write our name all over space or whatever the fuck, anyone can claim it as their own, and that's up to no good :colbert:
yeah, only race makes humankind advance because competition is one of the things that makes us evolve, and got us here in the first place.
I dont get why they havent done this already, after all we do need to start thinking about what kind of tech we will need to be able to set up colonies, as well as improving space travel abilities.
No one has a base on the Moon because humans never made it to the Moon. It was all faked. That's why, even with all the advances in computers, rocket engines, life support systems, super strong composite materials, etc suddenly humans just decided "Meh, let's not go to the Moon anymore". So now I laugh every time some country announces they are going back to the Moon. HAHA! As if! If the Moon is worth going to, to launch Mars missions or any other reason, why aren't people already there? Why has it been DECADES since we even sent so much as someone to scout locations? I'll tell you why, cause we can't actually get humans alive to the Moon yet.

Yay, another space race.
aeiou
Oh stop it. Go back to watching Fox. That whole "humans never went to the moon" is such bullshit, and you know it.
God it's like a solar flare fried everyone's sarcasm detectors or something
Why would you use the moon as a staging ground for a mars mission? It's not even 0.1% closer to it than Earth is.
Less gravity and no atmosphere (and therefore no air resistance). The massive amount of energy required to overcome both of those on earth is lessened on the moon, meaning less fuel is required. Once you're in space you don't require as much power to actually get yourself anywhere, since there is less acting back on you. At least I'm pretty sure that's it. I'm no physicist/rocket scientist though, could be wrong.
Why would you use the moon as a staging ground for a mars mission? It's not even 0.1% closer to it than Earth is.
Ecsaping the moons gravity is much easier than earths, landings due to little to no atmosphere is also a plus, and it is really fuckin cool
Ecsaping the moons gravity is much easier than earths, landings due to little to no atmosphere is also a plus, and it is really fuckin cool
Wrong and wrong. You still have to escape Earth's gravity to get to the Moon, so it's vastly more expensive to build shit in lunar orbit than Earth orbit. The only way that makes sense is if everything for the Mars mission is built on the Moon and flown to lunar orbit, but we aren't going to be building anything on the Moon in our lifetimes. Landing on the Moon requires a shitload more energy than landing on Earth because you have to burn fuel the entire way down. Thanks to the atmosphere, landing on Earth takes almost no energy, you just have to lower your orbit enough for air resistance to slow you down. The Shuttle lands unpowered, and Apollo just plowed into the atmosphere on the way back from the Moon without wasting fuel to stop in orbit first. Any Mars mission would have to be assembled in Earth orbit before departure, utilizing multiple heavy-lift launches. Going to the Moon in the context of a mission to Mars is pointless.
Awesome. Like others said, a second space race as the result of this would be even more awesome.
Putin joke, aeuiou john madden? joke, Soviet Russia reversal.

Oh yeah the same Russia that's going to save us from a cataclysmic meteor? Lol k
Russia isnt as bad as you think, its just different. Why waste money on a road to a village 1000km away where 10 people live, when you have much better stuff to do with it. (No im not russian, yes I have been there)
What a fucking stupid thing to say. How would you like it if you lived in a small town somewhere and you were unable to get needed supplies because the only way of getting there was by a dirt road that floods every time it rains? Would like another Space Race! Woot, hopefully?
Will people be able to survive in the base without suits? I think if you had to stay in a suit while you're in there there wouldn't be much point in even having a base.

So it does make sense if you think about it for 2 seconds. I am more than certain they will have a decent way to get to the surface.
This conversation took place last night. Me: "Hey mom did you hear that Russia has plans to build a base on the moon within the next 20 years?" Mom: "They can't do that, it's our moon! We have a flag there! Do they have a flag there? I don't think so. Me: ":sigh:"
