Couldn't it just be from a ship carrying rocks? Hull breaks open and dumps its cargo into a cone shape, but the ship doesn't sink somehow.
Call me an unwashed and uneducated ape, but... ...Well, it just looks like a circular-ish pile of rocks. It'd be appreciated if someone could explain why this is all that important.

That's the power of archaeology.
