scientists often also dont know what theyre talking about
it doesn't say that conclusively, it says that when exposed to the weed killer "the rats showed similar symptoms."
That's like saying the theory of gravity is inconclusive because dropping objects "only showed similar effects".

A couple of anecdotal UFO incidents do not negate centuries worth of empirical evidence.

Balloons float upwards, does that make them overcome gravity?
No, Their bouancy is greater than the gravitational pull, but they are still subjected to the same gravity, I.e they still have weight.
Does this allow us to feed the poor?
wtf are you doing stroma

i didnt mention aliens, alien pimps or mars
i dont know enough about either of those theories to comment on them

but the canada defense minister did claim aliens exist too

watch the video instead of reading the title
Stroma, giving you the benefit of the doubt here, and allowing for the assumption that the account you linked to of unidentified alien spacecraft performing aerial maneuvers that appear to defy gravity is credible, in what way does that stand as any sort of evidence that gravity doesn't exist, and furthermore, how does that stand to support your argument against GMO food?
'Cause I'm just not drawing the connection.
How did this thread go from burgers to aliens?

i didn't say it didn't exist, i said the theory was inconclusive

and by that i mean you should not consider it an objective truth, like many do, as there are noted exceptions

and the thread isnt about GMO foods, it's about a burger that was created in a way that MAY be considered GM, depending on specifics on how they made it, but is currently considered not with the information provided

Actually read up on the guy and his claims are some of the funniest i'v read in a while
Found a Vice source among the UFO sites
This bit stood out
"Ostensibly, the Tall Whites (Aliens) struck a deal with the American government shortly after arriving on Earth. Charles Hall has alluded to some kind of technology exchange program, and Hellyer has also implied that many of society’s wonders are actually just swagger jacked from alien discoveries that have been clandestinely shared with our government. "

"Anyone who has researched the Tall Whites will know that former airman Dr. Charles Hall is the go-to expert in the field. Dr. Hall spent two years working as a weather observer on a military base in the Nevada Desert. That is, of course, where the Tall Whites live. Charles says they travel through space in egg-shaped pods, because that’s simply a more efficient way to speed across deep space.(somehow ?) Some intrepid believers were able to spot large egg-like objects (Isn't that the plastic things farmers store hay in) on Google Earth in the precise location where Hall said the Tall Whites lived. Which means that these guys totally exist!"
If that's the case then the Aliens got some really shitty tech (or are just assholes). I'm assuming it takes a bit more then our current tech level plus a bit to travel the stars
the theory of gravity is inconclusive because objects have been observed "overcoming gravity"
Wow are you serious.
Let's ignore the fact you're using an UFO encounter as scientific fact for a moment.
Overcoming gravity =/= no gravity.
Overcoming gravity isn't that hard, planes and rockets overcome gravity, hell you overcome gravity every time you get up, that doesn't mean that gravity isn't there, it is, we're just projecting a force equal or more powerful than gravity because gravity is very fucking weak.
[editline]5th August 2013[/editline]
So does this mean that real beef is now vegan?
Well no, they still needed to get the cells which come from an animal and vegans don't eat anything that's linked to an animal regardless of whether the animal suffers or not.
Vegetarians might eat this since no animal suffered to produce the meat, getting a few cells is as easy and painless as using a comb.
i think you guys are reading my post wrong because i didn't say "gravity doesn't exist"
The cells still originated from cows, so at least in this case it would not be vegan. The idea here is essentially to take small bits of meat and grow them into larger bits.
I think most vegans would consider it vegan.
The majority of vegans/vegetarians that I know have made that choice not because they dislike meat but because of the conditions that animals are subjected to. What we're talking about here is a minimal amount of cells taken from one cow. I don't know the exact science of it, but the notion is that you could grow meat from just a couple of cells, meaning the suffering subjected on another creature to produce the meat you'll be eating is reduced a thousandfold.
The folks I've spoken to have said that if this sort of thing becomes a widespread and affordable way to get meat they'd be happy to get in there
i think you guys are reading my post wrong because i didn't say "gravity doesn't exist"
While you are technically right in that gravity isn't confirmed, things don't "overcome" gravity, they have some kind of force that equals or bests gravity. "Things flying as though there was no gravity" doesn't mean they are nullifying it, just that they are generating some thrust or momentum that escapes the effects.
Also there's nothing wrong with this meat, it's just meat grown, it's not genetically altered to be supermeat or some shit, it's just cultured cow.
When I opened this thread I was expecting a discussion about the ethics of lab grown meat (whether positive or negative), not aliens.
I think most vegans would consider it vegan.

This would end up being an interesting development. I know a few people that don't eat meat for dietary reasons, specifically red meat. So, I know it wouldn't have an effect on those people, but it'd be interesting to see what happens once people got over the whole "this is made in a lab" and the inevitable smear campaign that'd be run against "food made in a lab." That's probably quite a few years off though.
Personally, I think this is pretty cool and would eat it.
i would totally grow a burger and eat it
[editline]5th August 2013[/editline]
i imagine a future where i have a plant that bears the fruit of an entire burger, buns and all. my future backyard will be filled with burger and pizza trees
This is HUGE.
This means the meat has no severe problems with taste: the biggest obstacle that seemed to lie before lab grown meat of this kind. What this means is we can grow so much more food so much more efficiently, no wasting time raising cows and letting them waste energy and producing methane walking around. And, PETA will probably like it to since it could be feasible to never have to slaughter an animal to eat meat.
The big problem will be of course, the perception people have of it. So many people already buy "organic" just for the label at a much higher expense, and if people are scared of GMO i can see those people trying to riot over this.
I want one.
The problem with the taste of this synthetic burger is that it's not fatty. Fat gives taste to meat, and fat is a lot harder to "grow", as there's no simple biological synthesis of fats. Therefore, while the meat will be easy to grow in a Petri dish, getting the taste in it is gonna suck and will be a reason for people not to eat them.
