What's wrong with Detroit anyway, why don't they get a bunch of investment there and make some jobs?
they've gotten investments before, and they squandered all their chances.
The problem is that after the car manufactures moved out the city didn't think what next to do, it has no goals of making money or luring in business, it has an infrastructure from the 50's and crime out ass.
The only people interested in Detriot is hollywood because they can film movies for next to nothing.
Sure, but a country just doesn't become a third world country over night, it starts with one city.
Every country has a poorest city, you know.
What? Ethnic reasons? You know that the UK is 87% white, right?
He meants Scots vs English.
What? Ethnic reasons? You know that the UK is 87% white, right?
p obvious he means the Scots and the upcoming vote. Ethnicity is more than skin colour.
Explosions is still dumb, but not for that reason

(Scots are Brits)
He meants Scots vs Brits.
That's only slightly less stupid, the divide between Scotland and England is political, not ethnic.
I went to Windsor last year, and had to pass through Detroit in order to get there. Terrible mistake. I've seen pictures that make Detroit look like a dump and thought that it may have been a few suburbs only, but the entire damn city looks like that, and it's really sad
That's only slightly less stupid, the divide between Scotland and England is political, not ethnic.
Yeah, I'm one of the pro-split Scots and the entire campaign is founded on political/economic/democratic reasons for wanting to split, not ethnicity (Which would be idiotic, because we're all the same ethnicity)
I'm sure you've all seen this, but here's an example of why my family will never ever ever ever ever ever ever go to Detroit for vacation, and why it's generally referenced as a, "complete shithole." Yeah that's cause you're a fucking idiot.

Detroit has been on the decline since shortly after the 2nd World War. My grandfather, who lived in Windsor, recalls watching the entire city burn from his backyard during the 1967 riots.
Yes. I believe it was the crash of the Car Companies that was the first domino in the whole situation.
Actually, it was the riots from the 60s that was the start of the city's downfall.
Many burnt buildings from that incident still have not been torn down, mainly due to people who own the buildings are waiting for properties values to go back up, though I do admit that I don't fully understand why they are willing to wait around 50 years.
Blight is a huge problem in Detroit because of this.
Also a Mayor who stole millions from the city since the 90s didn't help either.
Pretty much. And turn it into a prison for our most dangerous criminals. And send Kurt Russell there.
escape from detroit sounds much scarier, too!

The effects can also be seen the the graph Karsten posted above. The White Flight from Detroit following the 1967 Riot is well documented. Tens of thousands abandoning the city results only damages the local economy further.
My mom and her family were lucky enough to move the hell out once it started getting shitty. I'm not a huge fan of cities in the first place, but one as shit as Detroit seems to be? Pretty glad I didn't have to grow up anywhere near it. She says she loved it as a kid, but she says that's probably because she was too young to know what was going on in like the early 60s when everything was setting up to fail.

It makes you think if Martin Luther King jr was never assassinated would he have been able to lead his lost people into building a high efficiency economy and a Black Capitol of America. Maybe Obama will after he leaves office, who knows.
I say we just get everyone who wants out of Detroit out of Detroit and put them elsewhere.
That place is fucked.
Detroit isn't as fucked as people think it is. The problem is that it's a city built for 2 million people that's only currently home to 700,000. This stretches everything far too thin, 700k people (most of whom are poor) cannot fund policing, water, power, road maintenance, garbage pickup, schooling, etc for 2m worth of infrastructure.
It definitely doesn't help that Michigan has basically been the official home of bad decisions over the last several decades.

This chart very clearly puts the blame on white flight (and the loss of jobs), not black people. The population growth of black people was continually slowing and then reverting over the same period of time that white people were leaving.

Because the US/whites screwed over the blacks for so long, they had a real hard time integrating into society even after the racial divides were conquered. It was basically a case of them being free and equal legally, but socially it wasn't the case, therefore for many years after the 1960s it was still hard for a black person to make a decent living due to discrimination, thus resulting them ending up in poorer locations and grouping together. With poverty comes crime, and those who can still make a decent living leave the area, which usually happened to be the whites.
This problem doesn't normally happen on such a large scale. Detroits economy collapsed and the cycle was never able to fix itself and just became worse.
I keep saying it, America will become a third world country before too long
Literally impossible. First World means you sided with America during the Cold War. How the heck are we going to go back and change history?
The only thing we can do is to massively deurbanize Detroit. Any building that has been vacant for more than five to ten years should be torn down for being a health and safety risk, and for increasing crime, ala Broken Window Theory. The plots of land left over from the destruction should be used to create farmland, public building projects(Work Progress Adminstration, not PROJEKTS), and building a more "small town" Detroit.
Really hard to see everyone generalize and generally talk shit about your city :/
A lot (most) of you have never been here and have only seen this stuff on TV. It's a bad situation, yes, but we aren't hopeless here. Detroit is thriving in many areas, downtown is awesome, companies like QuickenLoans and it's subsidiaries bring in thousands of interns every summer and has been voted one of the best places to work in the America. A lot of Detroiters are incredibly hard working people who have been dealt a bad hand. It's not easy for people to just up and leave, there are no jobs, there is no money. There is only so much we can do for ourselves.
I feel like the rest of the world finds it fashionable and funny to make fun of Detroit, but kicking us while we are down only adds to the problem. People say "lol fuck Detroit turn it into a prison" yet you don't hear many people try to figure out (feasible) solutions. Just frustrating, man.

A lot of white flight actually started happening not because black people were having troubles integrating, but because black people were integrating too well. For basically the first time in American history black people were able to live the "car in the driveway, 2.2 kids, white picket fence" stereotype because they were able to get a lot of the same jobs and go to the same schools as white people. Naturally, racists hated this and buggered off to places where they didn't have to live next to black people.

Plus General Motors is still there. They're kind of a big deal, I hear they make a car or two every now and then.

Why is this? According to comments on the article it's because Detroit is depopulated?
