• Do video games make you racist? Study suggests playing as a black character can make you more racist

Shit, with all the time I spent playing San Andreas I must be the most racist person on the planet! BRB, I think I hear my slaves slacking off in the cotton fields.
How absurd. I've been playing APB lately, and after running around dispensing sweet justice as Afro Cop, I have only respect in my heart.
Daily Mail should be a bannable source.
Michael didn't really strike me as a psychopath, more like he tends to respond to things emotionally and gets dragged into bad situations as a result.
Michael is obviously messed up and he becomes more and more messed up as the plot progresses but you will also feel bad for him.
I wonder if we could get Neil DeGrasse on the case and see what he has to say on the subject.
There's what media tells you, but also what media doesn't tell you. Both of those things form the message, and the vicious circle of stereotypes. Let's think about what we see on TV: every time you hear about exceptional children on TV, they're caucasian... and most of the time we hear about crime, drugs, etc. it's going to be minorities. Generally speaking. But when's the last time you saw news about this on TV? But it's not because you don't/can't see something that it's not happening. The less we will let groups of people get categorized into airtight boxes, the more everyone will be able to empathize and understand each other, and that's when the vicious circle will be broken. Kinda ranty post but I hope you see what I mean.
i totally agree with you. I didnt mean to own the truth but generally speaking, its what media does.
They could just already be racists and play as black characters to screw around.

after being randomly assigned to either a black or white avatar.
Good job reading the first fucking line of the quote
Daily Mail pff, Well I can tell you dota2 made me a racist against russians.
Good job reading the first fucking line of the quote
"They", people who generally play as black characters.
Just because I made my fallout 3 character black so liam neason would be black too does not make me racist Screw you Daily Fail
Daily Mail pff, Well I can tell you dota2 made me a racist against russians.
I've actually met tons of super friendly people from eastern european countries, turkey, russia, ukraine, austria. There are going to be rude-ass gamers everywhere but there are cool people all around the world too. Dota is a bit of an eye-opener to that considering it has such a big popularity in eastern europe.
Turkey and Austria are eastern European countries? [editline]21st March 2014[/editline] Turkey is a European country?
"should daily mail articles count as news? Newly released study says fuck no, more at 11"
daily mail may have reported it but it's an academic statistical analysis soooo i haven't read the study itself but i'm very curious if it possibly has something to do with the content of the game itself in the elder scrolls i almost always go redguard (even if i don't intend to spec like a redguard) and i went jubilant in dark souls, and i didn't feel any more racist when that happened i think it's probably a combination of the precise impulses of seeing a black character be placed into a gang related situation, which would make sense. because in the games the player character is basically making the decision to go fuck shit up, it's not like the world has conspired to make them worse off and shove them into crime
Turkey and Austria are eastern European countries? [editline]21st March 2014[/editline] Turkey is a European country?
Turkey straddles the border between Asia and Europe, doesn't it? I'd count it as both, personally.
Turkey and Austria are eastern European countries? [editline]21st March 2014[/editline] Turkey is a European country?
turkey is the border between the east and west and culturally is a part of both istanbul yo
Fair enough
I don't feel like playing as Lee in TWD has made me more racist, even if he technically [sp]murdered someone prior to the zombie epidemic.[/sp]
Whats great about TWD is that they don't just make Lee black and never talk about. The southern culture presented in the game actually does bring up the topic a good couple of times.
If university students can be influenced by video games at that age, then... well, I think it's not games that are the problem.
yo when i played the witcher my resentment for elves and dwarves grew every waking minute

I wonder if this is just a case of racists getting all crotchety over having to play as a black character and then being more vocal and annoying about their racism for a while afterward

Damn it, I was just coming in here to post this.
I hear if you play Demo in tf2 you also become ableist.
On the flip side, ever since Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas came out, more and more white people have been acting like black people.
What? Playing as a black character doesn't give you n-word privileges? Nigga please! [sp]I'm sorry. Don't hurt me.[/sp]
Hey! It okay! Its not racist when its an A
casual use of the word murderer in the article lol.
I'm racist because I don't want to play as a black guy.
This study actually makes sense. Violence is usually associated with black stereotypes (mid 2000's gangsta rap music videos for instance). This is one of the only identities that they have. White people on the other hand have violent images in media as well, but they have greater representation of non violent acts than black people do. So when playing as a black character these stereotypes arise in comparison to things shown in the media, but when playing as a white character other images might arise first.
I think we need more games like The Walking Dead because it even got 4channers to stop making racist jokes for a while
Lee is a good character overall, but they still wrote his backstory as a convict who may have killed a man. And the game starts in the back of a cop car. Or are we just going to overlook that part.
