Maybe he wouldn't do that if the US Government didn't label him a traitor and start hunting him? That's what happened when he revealed the NSA's illegitimate activities. I think if your Government betrays you like that, it's reasonable that you would care less about their other intelligence secrets. If he sells everything he knows to Russia, it'd be nobody's fault but the US Government for acting the way they did. They didn't have to hail him as a hero, but they turned him into a villain, so would you blame him for acting like one?
Snowden himself has revealed that he took the job specifically to gather information for release. He knew what he was doing was espionage and he planned it months in advance, planning to flee the country rather than face the government in court, and taking secrets with him that were completely unrelated to what he was whistleblowing on. That's hardly a case of the government betraying a citizen, he knew exactly what he was getting into and his behavior is a far cry from that of Ellsberg.
It seems like Snowden has no real idea what he is to do next. He's running to all of the US's geopolitical rivals. I would much prefer it if he ran to Ecuador or Iceland in the first place, instead of hopping from country to country with four laptops full of sensitive intelligence.
I can understand Ecuador, because they offered Asylum to Assange, so they must be trustable. But why Iceland? They're a US Ally and a member of NATO (they don't even have an army, NATO is their army).
All this could've been avoided on America's part, if they could control themselves and the "security!! We'll spy on everyone for security!" ideology they seem to have developed in recent years, and with the birth of the Internet and computers.
