Why do people say it'll require a pilots license? Ultralights
How many people depend on ultralights for getting to work each morning? More to the point, do you see thousands of ultralights flying through the sky on an hourly basis?
Imagine Marty McFly's having a visit to the future. The skylanes are packed, you've been stuck hovering in traffic for three hours, burning untold thousands in fuel. Frustrated, you weigh down the klaxon, the sound drowned out by the roar of turbojet engines. In front of you, a car fails, crashing into the car below it. Debris is scattered by the high winds into the engines of nearby cars, and soon the whole lane of traffic is collapsing. Dozens of cars tumble out of the sky into yet more dozens. You look on in wonder as the leviathan of crushed metal and gasoline finally hits the ground, demolishing an entire city block. The light turns green, and you finally fly to your office, only to find it was destroyed by yet another traffic jam. [editline]5th May 2014[/editline] The future looks bright, everybody.
did you guys actually read the OP or what
Mods really should be banning for that more often in my opinion. I guess one concern I have for this is maintenance, planes require a massive amount of maintenance, if this remotely requires as much maintenance as a plane it'd be incredibly inconvenient.
I think mass owned flying cars would only work if everything was automated. I like to think of automated cars in general since google started showing them off, imagine the interior of a car being more like the back of limo with a wrap around couch and shit. This may soon be a reality.

I guess the novelty of a flying car is that it would enable a person to travel much further in a short period of time. This would enable one to fly to the beach in an hour or so, land, drive to a restaurant, have lunch at the coast, swim in the ocean, fuel up and fly to the mountains in the same day. However, due to the constraints involved, specifically that these types of aircraft are not ideal for either task they perform, the expense, and the training required to operate one safely and efficiently, as well as the nightmare that FTC's would face, make this a rich person's niche hobby. At which point it would be simpler to buy a small jet and have a car already at the destination hanger. Flying cars probably won't see widespread adoption as individual aircraft ownership and care is for the most part prohibitively costly and impractical. However, increased interest and lowering costs of civilian aviation would be neat.
