Proof that it would cease to exist and not just go underground?
The alcohol industry imploded because of prohibition. A lot of companies producing alcohol even failed to recover after it.
Yes, now please explain why every gun owner in the United States is a certified gunsmith.
As long as you've got experience in metal/wood work. You'll go a long way.
The internet is also a beautiful thing.
Yes, now please explain why every gun owner in the United States is a certified gunsmith.
Not everyone is, but since they hardly need any upkeep, and anyone who owns and knows how to use a gun knows how to clean it and keep it working. Guns don't break often. And there are still dozens of thousands of gunsmiths in the country.
Yes, now please explain why every gun owner in the United States is a certified gunsmith.
Reading comprehension, you tout this great pariah of education that your Island has, yet you don't display it.
He was saying that making a gun is really fucking easy to do and can be done with the most basic of metals, he never fucking said that everyone was a gunsmith.
The alcohol industry imploded because of prohibition. A lot of companies producing alcohol even failed to recover after it.
But it did recover.
If a bunch of pakistani goat herders in the middle of nowhere can build deadly things out of scrap metal and make ammunition with basic chemicals (using hammers instead of proper presses), that whole argument goes out of the window.
Why is it that so many people try to equate the arms industry with people making rifles from scrap?
The alcohol industry imploded because of prohibition. A lot of companies producing alcohol even failed to recover after it.
The difference being that you don't constantly buy guns from companies. The standard person would usually buy a firearm and then have it for a good while, possibly expanding his collection later on.
But it did recover.
yes but we dont live in prohibition anymore, silly
Yes, now please explain why every gun owner in the United States is a certified gunsmith.
The majority of gun owners know the inner workings of their weapons, and can easily replicate the parts if they desired to. While that doesn't make them certified, they certainly know how to.
Yes, now please explain why every gun owner in the United States is a certified gunsmith.
Once again have you ever seen an AK?
The majority of gun owners know the inner workings of their weapons, and can easily replicate the parts if they desired to. While that doesn't make them certified, they certainly know how to.
I wouldn't go as far as to say that, but im sure that most gun owners know what to ask for from metalworkers when something gets broken.
Still waiting for an explanation on how reducing consumption of alcohol is a meaningful statistic and not just allowing confirmation bias to selectively choose data. Let's not even get into specifically defining prohibitions success based on legal alcohol.
But it did recover.
It took several decades to.
Prohibition had a notable effect on the alcohol brewing industry in the United States. When Prohibition ended, only half the breweries that previously existed reopened. Wine historians also note Prohibition destroyed what was a fledgling wine industry in the United States. Productive wine quality grape vines were replaced by lower quality vines growing thicker skinned grapes that could be more easily transported. Much of the institutional knowledge was also lost as winemakers either emigrated to other wine producing countries or left the business altogether.[81]

It's the same argument thats used in every discussion about the Brit's weapon ban. If you ban assault weapons, then the criminals who are already going to break the law will still acquire the guns illegally. Would you rather have dangerous weapons in the hands of some good people and some bad, or only the bad.
Not everyone who commits gun crimes are part of organised criminal gangs
I don't really see why assault weapons should be allowed, regardless of whether they were used in Newtown
What they consider assault weapons, are no more deadly than a semi-automatic hunting rifle. They consider anything with a pistol grip, telescoping stock, and rails to be an assault weapon, i highly disagree with this decision.

Guns are a much larger industry than alcohol. If they wanted to, companies could just move and you could still get ahold of their parts through illegal import.
Still waiting for an explanation on how reducing consumption of alcohol is a meaningful statistic and not just allowing confirmation bias to selectively choose data. Let's not even get into specifically defining prohibitions success based on legal alcohol.
Because despite people wanting alcohol, committing crimes, the growth of criminal gangs, etc, surprisingly, alcohol consumption dropped.
It took several decades to.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prohibition_in_the_United_States#Effects_of_the_Prohibition
It also made organized crime rise in the United States, but hey, what's higher murder and violence rates when you get to ban liquor.
yes but we dont live in prohibition anymore, silly
What? I know that.
I just said in a too short and un-detailed reply that some brewing companies did recover and grew to the same size if not to even a greater size.

Address my point or acknowledge that once again you are doing nothing beyond moving your goalposts.
Are you really so delusional that you do not realize this is what you are doing?
I wouldn't go as far as to say that, but im sure that most gun owners know what to ask for from metalworkers when something gets broken.
honestly most of the parts that are going to regularly fail are ones that aren't firearms specific, like small springs and screws, stuff that can easily be replaced by the user
the only time you need a gunsmith/machinist is in the rare case of a catastrophic failure of a critical component, and those are usually rated for thousands (if not tens of thousands) of rounds before failing
Yes, now please explain why every gun owner in the United States is a certified gunsmith.
There's still a lot of expert gunsmiths. And countless rednecks that somehow manage to build working firearms possibly using Ork magic.
Why is it that so many people try to equate the arms industry with people making rifles from scrap?
Mine was more of a rebuttal to his "guns are complex things and hard to make" theory.
Heck, give me (with my poor experience in metal working) a box of firecrackers and let me rummage through a scrapyard for a couple hours, and I'll probably manage to cobble together something shooty (or at least explody).
Because despite people wanting alcohol, committing crimes, the growth of criminal gangs, etc, surprisingly, alcohol consumption dropped.
That doesn't explain how that is a relevant statistic. It's literally a meaningless figure by itself.
The burden of proof is upon you to show that you not only have a statistic (this has been shown), but that it is useful information. You should also attempt to show how possible means of discrediting your information are invalid, but this isn't an intrinsic requirement.
Because despite people wanting alcohol, committing crimes, the growth of criminal gangs, etc, surprisingly, alcohol consumption dropped.
And what relevance does this have to anything
unless you're arguing that fewer guns will be bought if they're outlawed, then yeah, you'd be a fucking idiot to think otherwise
but guns aren't consumables. they last much longer than alcohol, and stay in circulation a lot longer, even without new ones being bought.
Because despite people wanting alcohol, committing crimes, the growth of criminal gangs, etc, surprisingly, alcohol consumption dropped.
'So the number of criminal gangs is on the rise and thus more and more policemen and innocent civilians are being killed as gangs struggle to sell alcohol on the black market... but the average Joe is now drinking 3 units a week instead of 7!!! GREAT SUCCESS!!!!!'
Because despite people wanting alcohol, committing crimes, the growth of criminal gangs, etc, surprisingly, alcohol consumption dropped.
So are you basically saying that a lot of things went to complete shit (people lost jobs, criminals became powerful, people lost lives) but it's somehow okay because there was less alcohol around?
I love how the whole thread is discussing with Sobotnik.
