No I'm not?
I never argued it was positive.
then why mention it
While I disagree that this will prevent events like this from happening in the future, I have trouble being immensely sympathetic to those people who are so desirous to possess automatic weaponry.
While as a historian I understand and appreciate the need for citizens to be able to defend and protect themselves from government, Its not like forming a militia of hicks with M-16s will do us any good when their rebellion gets face-raped by drone strikes.
Times have changed, I'll just be glad we can still own reasonable guns for sport, hunting, protection, etc, and carry on like an adult and not a child having my redundant toys taken away.
If we could all get back to the REAL social issues that would just be lovely.
Why specifically assault weapons? Why not shotguns, rifles and pistols?
Not saying they SHOULD be banned, but why are assault weapons the ones to be banned?
No I'm not?

WHAT ARE YOU ARGUING ABOUT THEN?! Are you negative? Unsure? Why do you jump into a discussion without showing what side you're on? There is no point to speak if you don't show what you want.
Guys, he wasn't arguing that it was positive, he was arguing that it reduced consumption and that if guns were banned the same would happen. However, guns are not consumable, and last much, much longer than alcohol, so his point is moot anyway.

The assault weapon ban relates to all firearms.

You can shot more people faster. But you can do that with two guns.
But in the US assault weapons does not necessarily mean automatic rifles, it can mean all weapons you can attack someone with.

that's not what an assault weapon is. Automatic weapons are already banned, this bill will just ban semiautomatic rifles with pistol grips, detachable magazines, and barrel shrouds.

So did you not read the actual article or are you that ignorant of the term assault weapon.
While I don't have a problem with this, psychopaths will just find other ways to cause a mass murder.
See, that's exactly why I have a problem with it. It's not gonna stop the crazies from hurting people, it's just a feel-good piece of shit legislation that only penalizes legitimate gun owners.
The assault weapon ban relates to all firearms.
Ohh. Because when I think "assault" in terms of weapons I usually think of these guys:

I'm glad this law was put in place, but late or not, I'm going to being it up
This is a law, if someone was planning on a mass murder using weapons, the law isn't going to stop them.

Didn't there used to be a rating for "Bad Reading"?
Why specifically assault weapons? Why not shotguns, rifles and pistols?
Not saying they SHOULD be banned, but why are assault weapons the ones to be banned?
Because these laws are usually written by people whose only knowledge of firearms comes from Hollywood movies and Call of Duty. Plus they utterly despise anything that goes "bang".
It's like asking hardcore muslims to regulate bacon and gay marriage.

The original argument was:
People that want weapons will find them. Banning guns will do nothing. Prohibition does not work. If you try to ban something the majority of people want, they will find it someway somehow.
He was actually wrong, because prohibition DID reduce consumption, despite his insistence it had no effect.
I simply extrapolated this further to argue that "If guns were banned, we would see their numbers decrease, alongside a decline of the domestic industry".

would count but it's not the only gun that's an "assault weapon"

This is a law, if someone was planning on a mass murder using weapons, the law isn't going to stop them.
It was put in place back in the nineties but repealed because it didn't do anything to crime. It hasn't been put into place again yet, the president just considered it.

Please do find a post where I said such then.

Except you wouldn't see their numbers decrease, as we've proven before.

Seriously. Read about illegal whiskey. You'll be enlightened.

Define "reasonable gun", and explain how a semi-automatic rifle that only looks like its military, full-auto counterpart is not a valid tool for the activities you mentioned.

It reduced
LEGAL
consumption, not consumption.

How did you prove this?
Why do people need firearms in the first place? I am a non american, I live in Russia that's pretty famous forhigh chances of getting murdered or badly injured.
And we don't have firearms and don't need them. There is more trouble after using one.
After reading many posts I still don't get why do you need to have a gun?
Don't take it as I am against or for gun laws. I can't pick a side yet.

Hunting, target/sport shooting, collection, self defense.

I agree.
DanRatherman, do you know how many people use AR-15s and many other "Assault Weapons" for hunting? Quite a few. In fact, there are a lot of people who use AK-47s for hunting. I would not advice this though, because the round would probably be too powerful to have any meat left, from what I understand. Regardless, they still use these weapons against some large game.
It reduced
LEGAL
consumption, not consumption.
Despite what the biased, cherrypicked sources I purposefully sought out to support my argument say otherwise?
Consumption also remained low after the law was repealed.
How did you prove this?
Are you even reading any of the posts you reply to?
Go back to the previous page, the one before it, or the one before that. Guns are well built and they won't break easily in the hands of most owners. the parts of a gun that usually break are easily replaced because they're not specialized. If a critical part fails you can easily find a gunsmith or a smith who knows about guns because there are literally thousands in America. You can even build your own guns easily with the help of a little metalworking knowhow and the internet.
How did you prove this?
Guns aren't like alcohol. They're pieces of metal and wood, or plastic that are designed to last decades.
